My Hero Academia TV Series Discussion

  • Saw this got announced earlier this month and it'll be here on Funimation. Who else is excited for the TV anime adaptation?

The manga has been quite a fun read as well from the start.

    Synopsis
What would the world be like if 80 percent of the population manifested superpowers called "Quirks" at age four? Heroes and villains would be battling it out everywhere! Being a hero would mean learning to use your power, but where would you go to study? The Hero Academy of course! But what would you do if you were one of the 20 percent who were born Quirkless?

Middle school student Izuku Midoriya wants to be a hero more than anything, but he hasn't got an ounce of power in him. With no chance of ever getting into the prestigious U.A. High School for budding heroes, his life is looking more and more like a dead end. Then an encounter with All Might, the greatest hero of them all, gives him a chance to change his destiny…

  • I enjoyed the manga. My only concern is that I don't know if one anime season will get far enough into the story to start getting awesome.

I enjoyed the manga. My only concern is that I don't know if one anime season will get far enough into the story to start getting awesome.

I think the characters alone is enough of a reason to watch it. Hopefully, it'll end up getting several seasons though.

  • My Hero Academia TV anime to be 13 episodes according to French simulcast service AnimeDigitalNetwork: http://animedigitalnetwork.fr/news-anime-manga/291-my-hero-academia-debarque-sur-adn-le-3-avril

  • Seen some interesting comments and concerns over My Hero Academia getting 13 episodes instead of being 24 or something like that, and honestly I can't say I am too surprised honestly. Weekly Manga goes fast, and by the time they would have done that, it would've been pretty caught up to the manga. Also not too surprised as Bones has a pretty busy schedule coming for the next two seasons, and I actually feel while it is less episodes than people would have liked, the 13 episodes themselves will be higher animation standard quality in comparison to long-running Toei Animation shows by a country mile. Seriously, everyone who says they wanted My Hero Academia to be a LONG RUNNING SHONEN….they just don't know what they are talking about. Like. At all. Also Shonen Weekly Manga actually tends to flash by pretty quickly in anime format, where a month's worth of chapters can sometimes come out to be like a single episode worth of content. And action scenes themselves can go pretty fast too. So at the very least people predicting they will either adapt too little or skip too much I don't think it's as bad or dire as you may think.

I got 3 predictions for what this 13 episode count means.

    1. Split Season. Bones typically does this a lot when they do something with 24 episodes in the past few years, where they do 12 one season, and then 12 more in the season after.

    2. For the time being it will just be a 13 episode show, and the show will end probably around

! the part where Stain the Hero Killer shows up and Izuku, Shouto, and Ida team up to stop him, because that to me seems like an ideal seasonal stopping point.
For those of you smart enough to skip the spoiler tag, Chapter 56/57 is what I refer to.

    3. This one may be a less popular option but considering it is BONES it's a possibility. Maybe something akin to the first Noragami season, where they keep in tune with the manga, then for the last few episodes they do an anime original story that's conclusive enough to end the show, but open enough to leave room for a second season in the near future.

Point is, I'm honestly a lot less upset by this news than I thought I'd be because this gives me hope that at the very least whatever episodes or chapters they get up to, they will be pretty good Bones level quality regardless of what or how they adapt the material.

  • Seems like a BIG announcement is coming in the next couple of days, anyone else get the feeling it could be a potential announcement that the show may end up on Toonami?

(Also, while this isn't my thread, since we have a Academia sub forum now, could we get this thread put in there?)

    EDIT:

New PV trailer is out featuring the OP by Porno Graffitti.

  • This post is deleted!

  • Finished watching it.

Great soundtrack for this show, obviously as the same composer who worked on Haikyu.

I think the OP song is good too in terms of the choreography and way it was decorated. Deku's voice seems okay, not too fond of it but still decent. Action is fairly well done with the whole heroes stuff as well. I love how All Might is portrayed in this series, just very fitting for a character like him. The pacing worries me slightly but I think the show will be fine. I heard the show will be 13 episodes though. Still, good start so far, looking forward to more!

  • This was an awesome first episode! The dub of this will be so epic. I bet they got to use a fair amount of their voice actors on this one. This is going to be my number one choice for Dubbletalk.

  • Now that we've got a dedicated forum for My Hero Academia, I'll be moving this topic there. :)

  • All Might has a pretty good ohohojou-sama laugh

  • Can't believe I stayed up to like 6AM (with work the next day) to watch the countdown (laughs). Still time well spent. I had to feel for them though when the video was quirky and those oreos were probably starting to give them heartburn, lol. Luckily, it all seemed to get ironed out…. Even though they were still going, I was like, "Yeah, it's six, and I really have to get out of here...." I think it was cool to bring in the community the way they did, I think they should have more special events. I would make the suggestion of having a built-in FUNimation chat function. I just didn't feel like registering with Twitch to participate in the chat. One area of confusion, however. With my current EVS, is that applicable to funimationnow, or, will I have to get a second subscription? If so, how much would that run me?
    Regards,
    P.J.

  • Wow P.J. that's intense! lol I'm surprised you were able to make it through work that day. I felt bad for them too lol they were starting to sweat there for a second. I ended up playing it on my phone app and it was able to work. It was a lot of fun! I hope they do more of these too. Maybe for there next big show they can do another event. Chad better be there next time too. lol did you enjoy the special guests?

Sorry, what do you mean by EVS? If you are asking if you need a new subscription from FunimationNow, then no. The current Funimation subscriptions carry over to FunimationNow. Let me know if that answers your question!

  • surprised you were able to make it through work that day…. Yeah, it"s that moment when you"re in the bathroom at work, slapping yourself silly in front of the mirror while simultaneously observing tremendous dark circles under your eyes and questioning, What have I done with my life!” :-o

To be honest, I remember them saying that somebody else should have been there, but, I"m not sure who that person is.... I believe one of my friends met Lauren from an appearance at one of the cons; that was the first time I"ve seen her - - I"ve seen Justin in other settings pertaining to FUN. I"m assuming Michelle is the sister of Justin? Let me say this, I have tremendous respect for Colleen, she has amassed such a significant portfolio with respect to acting/ voice acting/ drama/ stage/ anime - - you name it - - so impressive. I thought an interesting question for her might have been, If you were approached for a recurring role on Pokemon XYZ, would you take it?” I realize she has a family, so, with the demands required of a recurring role, I"m curious to know what her response would have been. Over the years, I have taken the time to research many of the voice talent from FUN through Wiki and IMDB. Let me say, it is mind-blowing the feats that these people have accomplished. People like Colleen, Vic Mignogna, Luci Christian, Caitlin Glass, Leah Clark, Todd Haberkorn - - all venerated in their own right - - these people are Hollywood for me, not the usual people that people think of in the context of Hollywood. If I could accomplish a tenth of what the aforementioned have, I would be a very happy person. People at my work comment that they could see my voice as the next animated Batman. I have to laugh. Perhaps, however, like Colleen was explaining, it mandates a level of precision for the syncing that not everyone does well with.... Maybe I can do an impersonation here or there, but, to be at the place she"s talking about (with consistency) I think if I got in that recording booth it would be like, We"re not in Kansas anymore....”, lol. Who knows? Even if a longshot, maybe, one of these days, I"ll audition for something or other.... Another aspect is, do I really want the exposure that goes with the territory? I don"t necessarily see myself as a very outgoing person.

EVS = Elite Video Subscription. Good to know I don"t have to get two subscriptions. What will become of the original site (funimation.com)? I would imagine, that with all the new features etc. the price has to be going up? On funimationnow, it is explained, Balance out the new with some of our best.” I just hope that isn"t coded language for the prospect of losing some of the classics.

    Thanks for your time,

    P.J.

  • Omg fun I dumped their cash in on this dragon ball z turd? It is horrible. Straight up kiddie toy marketing crap. This is why I canceled my sub after years as a paid subscriber. If this is the "best" fun I has to offer this cour they don't need my money. Maybe by the summer cour they might get their mobile apps working, and actually have a title or two worth paying for the streaming service.. Just watched the first EP on Hulu add free as I pay for that too.

  • Four members of the broadcast dub cast were revealed in tonight's Dubbletalk:

    Izuku Midoriya - Justin Briner
    Katsuki Bakugo - Clifford Chapin
    Ochaco Uraraka - Luci Christian
All Might - Christopher R. Sabat

I kind of had a feeling Sabat would voice either All Might or Katsuki.

  • I'm happy with this. Haven't heard Luci Christian in awhile, so I'm excited

  • Yeah I think she's been over with Sentai lately. Murano from Parasyte and Vivi from Chaika from what I remember recently

  • A couple more VA's were mentioned in last night's Dubbletalk:

    Present Mic - Sonny Strait
Tenya Iida - J. Michael Tatum

Sonny really channeled his inner DJ for this role.

  • @Riles:

All Might has a pretty good ohohojou-sama laugh

All-mIght is the most moe of them all.

I like how this series handles the idea of virtue being rewarded for powers. Avoiding spoiler's of All Might's quirk, the idea that Our Kid Hero (his name escapes me right now) is admirable for his desire to look out for people and be virtuous no matter what the situaton. His actions in episode 2 remind me of Captain America: the First Avenger. Steve may be a feeble weakling, but he's the feeble weakling who will not let his weakness define him, nor let his character or convictions waver.

It's almost Christian in it's worldview: the most moral are those who know weakness and privation, so that (through the recognition of the Almighty and All-Just) they may grow strong enough to defend the values they stand for. A very intriguing take on "the meek shall inherit the Earth", especially given the relative lack of Christian cultural influence in Japan.

Is this the trickle of Westernization working it's way into Japanese popular culture, or is the underdog story like this so universal? I don't put much stock in universal Storyteling Tropes ( Joseph Campbell has his head pretty far up his own behind, and that's not even touching his antisemitism), but I'm curious whether this is the case or not here?

  • Has anyone kept up with the sub release of MHA? Episode 11 just aired earlier today and it was fantastic! Honestly one of it's best episodes and just an really excellent one overall! I can only hope the next two bare the same qualify and given the preview for next week I think they will!

I'm not sure if people had reservations about watching this because it would be the this season's stereotypical shounen action series. (FYI I totally thought that title went to Twin Star Exorcists , which had cool art design and direction but I could barely get through episode 1.) But MHA totally embraces them, works with them, and perfects its approach to heroes and villains. The main villain is just great and his seiyuu is prefect I'm not sure how they'll dub it but I'm excited to hear it. It's great stuff! I'm kinda gushing over it but I'm a bad writer so I'm not sure if that's coming across. Hopefully all the exclamation points can tell you I'm excited and loving it. Also there really needs to be a second season. I'm kinda mad Twin Star Exorcists is getting 50 episodes when it's boring as sin but what can you do.

How are you guys liking the show? If someone wants to write about it, I would love to read it!
