Japanese subtitles?

  • Do the animes not come to Funimation with the original Japanese subtitles?

Do the animes not come to Funimation with the original Japanese subtitles?

In almost all cases, FUNi has to produce a translation of the Japanese dialog, along with an adaptation of the translation into both a subtitle script and a dub script. And all of that has to be approved by the Japanese Production Committee.

A few of their shows may already have translations and subtitles scripts available, such as picking up a show that originally streamed on Crunchyroll, but Funi didn't pick up the rights to until later, but in most cases, I believe they will still produce a new translation/scripts for their own use in many cases. Of course, any license rescues will typically come with all English language materials that were produced by the previous company, but they may not always be available, either because materials were lost, or the Japanese companies/creators would prefer that the earlier material not be used, which certainly seems to be the case with the old dub of Sailor Moon.

  • Funimation doesn't really comment on what the Japanese companies provide as far as materials, it differs by production and individual studio but it would always include a script (probably not in subtitle form, most likely text docs and timing sheets).

That said Funimation could with some work put on a Japanese subtitle track on their anime, but they wouldn't because it would directly conflict with the Japanese licensing side.
