1st Annual MANLIEST Anime MEN of MANLINESS Discussion Page

  • "What makes a man?
Is it the power in his hands?
Is it his quest for glory?
    Give it all you got
    To fight to the top
So we can know your story?"

Webster's defines the word "manly" as one of two things: (1.) 'having qualities generally associated with a man', and (2.) 'appropriate in character to a man.'

Beyond the dictionary's description of the word, however, what does it really mean to be "manly"? Can such a phrase really even be summed up in mere words?

In the minds of many, "MANLINESS", especially when it comes to anime characters, isn't really something that can truly be defined by definition. Sure, masculinity, machismo, vigor and whatnot are all important parts of it, but there's something MORE to it than that.

    It requires passion, nobility, purpose.

It means standing up for a cause that you believe is right and just - even when it isn't.

It means giving it all and fighting to the bitter end - even if it breaks the laws of physics.

It's bulging muscles, scars, pompadours, giant eyebrows, and Go Nagai sideburns.

It's epic speeches, dramatic hand gestures, and screaming at the top of your lungs.

    It's doing the impossible.

    Breaking the unbreakable.

    Row Row. Fight tha powah.

In the end, a character is either MANLY… or they're not. Those who can tell the difference..... Just KNOW.

And it is with this understanding that I, SpacemanHardy, hereby bring to you an event long in the making. For years on these forums, we have celebrated the greatest characters, greatest villains, and greatest female leads that anime has to offer. But for the first time in FUNimation forum history, we are going to celebrate the characters in anime who have it coming for a long time:

    MEN!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, it gives me great honor to present to you….

128 MEN will enter, but only one will reign supreme as the MANLIEST anime character of all time!!! (or at least for 2014)

What are the rules, you ask? Simple:

    1. Only ONE character per series.
    2. Characters MUST be from an anime. They can be anime based on manga and video games, but they HAVE to be from the show itself. No manga/game-only characters allowed.
    3. Characters must (obviously) be male. Robots and animals are allowed, provided they are both sentient and obviously masculine. Not to be sexist or unfair to the ladies, but they have their own tournament already.
    4. It doesn't have to be a main character, but it must be one that is at least somewhat important to the plot of the show. No one-episode roles, cameos, or blink-and-you'll-miss-it types. (Sorry Jack Rakan, but those Negima OADs just don't count )
    5. Cruelty is NOT MANLY. No douchebags, jerkwads, axe-murderers, puppy-kickers, puppy-BURNERS, or overall evil sons-a-bitches allowed. Villains and anti-heroes are okay, as long as they are at least noble in their cause and have a good code of ethics.
    6. Only MANLY MEN need apply. No sissy pretty boys, beautiful bishonen types, or overly moody, whiny, angsty teenagers. (That means YOU, Shinji!!!)

Here is the full list of the brave, noble souls who will be competing in this tournament. Whether they are battle-hardened martial artists, silver-tongued negotiators, giant robot pilots, gun-toting priests, or just regular old joes with a strong code of ethics, these are the men that have proven themselves worthy to fight their way to the top in order to claim the crown of champions:

Before you decide that the future is set, remember:

It's not about who's stronger, faster, smarter, or more popular.

    It's about who's MANLIEST.

Good luck to all our contestants, and may the best MAYUN win!! :)

  • I missed out on most of the "Amazons" voting so this should be fun.

  • After the first night of competition, our winners are:

    Wolfgang Grimmer- Monster
    Duke Togo - Golgo 13
    Jet Black - Cowboy Bebop
King Bradley - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
    Racer X - Speed Racer
Father Shiro Fujimoto - Blue Exorcist
Sinbad - Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic
    Shizuo Heiwajima - Durarara!!

Good luck to our next batch of combatants!!

  • The winners for our 2nd night of competition are:

    Toriko - Toriko
Roy Focker - Super Dimensional Fortress Macross
    Rider - Fate/Zero
    Sven Vollfied - Black Cat
    Prince Phillionel - Slayers
Sadamitsu Tsubaki - Sadamitsu the Destroyer
    Ginko - Mushi-Shi
    Ginnai Doma - Black Lion

In a shocking turn of events, fan-favorites Eikichi Onizuka and Joseph Joestar have already been eliminated! It just goes to show that anything can happen in the MANLIEST Anime MEN of MANLINESS Tournament!!

Good luck for our next group of combatants; they're going to need it!

  • I can't believe Adam Blade will lose to Harima!

  • The results are in for the third night of competition, and your winners are:

Manzo the Saw - Samurai Champloo
Lord Yupa - Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Taichi Hiraga Keaton - Master Keaton
    Coach Kouichirou Ohta - Gunbuster
    Kenji Harima - School Rumble
Erwin Smith - Attack on Titan
    Guts - Berserk
Kanji Tatsumi - Persona 4: The Animation

We had a few close calls as Keaton barely managed to squeeze out a victory against cyborg J. Erwin Smith rode the coattails of Attack on Titan's popularity to win against a seemingly unbeatable foe in Dark Schneider, but the real surprise was Kenji Harima besting the mighty Adam Blade.

But nothing on this earth will make up for the absolute thrashing that poor Bardroy endured at the hands of Guts. Will we have another landslide victory tonight? Or will there be yet more upsets? Stay tuned!!!

  • @SpacemanHardy:

the real surprise was Kenji Harima besting the mighty Adam Blade.

I for one was not surprised in the least. ~_^

    ! Needless stinks

  • After a particularly grueling 4th night of competition, your winners are:

    Toppy - Sands of Destruction
Kenshiro - Fist of the North Star
    Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo - Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo
Takeda Shingen - Sengoku Basara: Samurai Kings
    Tatsumi Saiga - Speed Grapher
Daisuke Jigen - Lupin the III
    Dutch - Black Lagoon
    Tomomi Masaoka - Psycho-Pass

Tonight, we had not one, but TWO ties. Though they tied up in the polls, both Toppy and Bo-bobo win their respective battles due to having more votes in the forums. Which just brings the point home: If you want your character to win beyond a shadow of a doubt, you GOTTA support them with your posts, too!!

Also, in the battle of Sabat vs. Sabat, Daisuke Jigen snipes Roronoa Zoro to take the victory. And Kenshiro, Dutch, and Masaoka all curbed-stomped their respective opponents with landslide victories of their own.

It only gets tougher from here on out, so let's wish the best of luck to our next combatants!!

  • BONUS QUIZ TIME, everyone!!!

The first person who can answer this question correctly wins manly bragging rights.

Question: How many characters on this list have artificial limbs? (giant robots and mech suits don't count)

Bonus point if you can name them all!!

  • The 5th night of this tournament has ended, and your winners are:

    Captain Bravo - Buso Renkin
Jotaro Kujo - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders
    Quent Yaiden - Wolf's Rain
Shio Sakaki - Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple
    J.P. - Redline
Batou - Ghost in the Shell
    Bear Walken - Gungrave
    Randel Oland - Pumpkin Scissors

Other than Batou's landslide victory against Joe the Condor, today's matches were actually fairly well split. Will we see another day with such strong competition? Stay tuned!!

  • Night number 6 of the tournament has ended, and your winners are as follows:

    Kamina - Gurren Lagann
    Piccolo - Dragon Ball Z
Munsu - Blade of the Phantom Master
    Black Jack - Black Jack
    Charles Beams - Eureka Seven
Kazuma Kuwabara - Yu Yu Hakusho
    Lehm Brick - Jormungand
    Dandy - Space Dandy

Tonight saw Black Jack win a perfect round against Captain Ahab, the relatively obscure Munsu winning out against the usually popular Master Asia, and fan-favorite Kamina barely squeaking out a victory against Mifune. Will we see anymore close calls or landslides in the next night of competition? Only one way to find out!

  • Sorry for being late to the party Spaceman, I was dealing with some distractions over the past few days. Hopefully (barring days I work anyway) I'll be back in the game now. :P

  • The penultimate day of competition for round 1 has passed, and these are the survivors:

    Mister - Coyote Ragtime Show
    Senji Kiyomasa - Deadman Wonderland
    Panthro - Thundercats (2011)
Oji "Gabriel" Tanaka - The Legend of Black Heaven
Mamoru Takamura - Fighting Spirit (Hajime no Ippo)
Manji - Blade of the Immortal
    Kotetsu T. Kaburagi/Wild Tiger - Tiger & Bunny
Major Alex Louis Armstrong - Fullmetal Alchemist

Roger Smith and The Big O put up a good fight against the Strong Arm Alchemist, but in the end they were no match for the techniques passed down the Armstrong family line for generations. Immortality didn't save Isaac Dian from the fury of Wild Tiger's Hundred Power, but it did give Manji a decisive victory against Bokuto Station's finest. And finally, he may have been our first kiss, but sadly Masa's natural charisma and charm couldn't stop the hard-rocking salary worker Oji Tanaka and his heavy metal space riffs of doom.

There's only one day of competition left in round 1, so let's get out there and send this first part out with a bang!!

  • The final night of competition for round 1 has ended, and here are the last combatants who will be advancing to round 2:

Captain Harlock - Space Pirate Captain Harlock
    Leomon - Digimon
    Roy Revant - Solty Rei
Soichi "Iron Man" Nishimura - Baka and Test
    Pip Bernadotte - Hellsing: Ultimate
November 11 - Darker Than Black
    Nicholas D. Wolfwood - Trigun
    Elfman Strauss - Fairy Tail

Elfman wins the tie against Sakuragi for having more posted votes in the thread. Just goes to show you you need to vote in the poll AND post your choice in the forums if you want your fighter to have a fighting chance.

With round 1 now ended, our competitors have earned themselves a brief respite over the weekend to heal their wounds and prepare themselves for their next battle, while I work on forming the official bracket. Did your favorites advance? Did you feel any character was unjustly outed before they had their time to shine? Who do you suspect is going to run away with the trophy at the end of it all? Let us know in the forums!!

Tournament resumes Monday morning at midnight. Until then, KEEP IT MANLY!!!

  • Courtesy of CHALLONGE.com, here is the official bracket for the second half of the tournament:

    !

With the exception of a handful of match-ups and the Roy vs. Roy fight (sorry, I couldn't resist :P), everything was completely randomized. I did make sure that the four heavy hitters - Kenshiro, Harlock, Guts, and Rider - couldn't fight each other until the quarter finals at least.

Go ahead and start filling out your brackets, everyone!! The contest resumes at midnight!!

  • @SpacemanHardy:

…here are the last combatants who will be advancing to round 2:
    Roy Revant - Solty Rei
November 11 - Darker Than Black

My faith in the anime fandom has been somewhat restored by this news. :)

  • The first night of round 2 has ended, and the survivors are:

Kenshiro - Fist of the North Star
    Wolfgang Grimmer - Monster
Erwin Smith - Attack on Titan
    Ginko - Mushi-Shi
Batou - Ghost in the Shell
    Pip Bernadotte - Hellsing: Ultimate
Jotaro Kujo - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders
    Roy Revant - Solty Rei

Erwin Smith continues to ride on his series' popularity, narrowly edging out Toriko to claim another victory. But will his luck last once he meets the heavy hitters in this tournament?

And though the battle of the Roys was a close one, Roy Revant was able to shoot down Roy Focker, winning the match by a single point.

It only gets tougher from here, folks! Stay tuned, and watch that bracket!!

  • Many apologies for the day-long delay. After laboring tirelessly for 8 hours straight slaying bi-dimensional demons and trolls, I proceeded to go to yonder mead hall and partake of the flesh ripped from the corpse of a wild game fowl, then fell hopeless victim to the curse of exhaustion as my body gave out despite my manliest of efforts.

! In other words, I went to O'Charley's after work, ate some chicken strips, then went home and went to bed early. :P

But fear not! We are back on schedule for tonight, and here are the previous round's winners:

    Rider - Fate/Zero
    Kotetsu T. Kaburagi - Tiger & Bunny
    Duke Togo - Golgo 13
Taichi Hiraga Keaton - Master Keaton
    Kamina - Gurren Lagann
    Randel Oland - Pumpkin Scissors
    Mamoru Takamura - Fighting Spirit
    Shizuo Heiwajima - Durarara!!

Takamura wins the tie against Senji for having more posted votes in the forums. Also, tigers are better than bears, fighting wizards using wrestling moves is nothing compared to fighting tanks with a handgun, and being one of the best sharpshooters in the world can't help you against the anime equivalent of MacGyver.

We're halfway through round 2, so let's keep this thing going!

  • I'm gonna be at Anime Blues Con all weekend, so we'll resume the poll Monday at midnight.

And yeah….. Harlock losing to Sven is total bullshit. -_-

  • Finally back from the con. Was a fun weekend, but now it's time to buckle down and get back to the tournament.

New poll goes up tonight, I promise. After that, we'll kick into the next round without delay. Let's get this thing finished already!

  • After a brief delay, the tournament is back into full swing, with the latest round of winners:

    Sven Vollfied - Black Cat
Manzo the Saw - Samurai Champloo
    Dutch - Black Lagoon
    Dandy - Space Dandy
King Bradley - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
    Tomomi Masaoka - Psycho-Pass
    Jet Black - Cowboy Bebop
Kazuma Kuwabara - Yu Yu Hakusho

Whether it was by luck or sheer coincidence, Sven managed to pull off an upsetting defeat of a nearly unbeatable Harlock. Leomon's heart of a lion didn't save him from the detective work of Manzo the Saw. And Dandy manages to skip out on the remedial classes by sneaking past Iron Man Nishimura for a come-from-behind victory.

Things are really starting to heat up as we head into the last quarter of round 2! Are your favorites still in the running? Let's find out!!
