Anime titles you would like a decent Live-Action Adaptation from

  • What anime series would you like to see become a good Live-Action movie?

Anime that already have Live-Action movies:
Dragon Ball (Dragonball Evolution. P.S. DON'T WATCH IT)
    Speed Racer

Some anime I would like to see a good Live-Action movie from:
Neon Genesis Evangelion (I would like to see Wes Anderson's take on it since End Of Evangelion is one of his favorite animated movies.)
Akira (Warner Bros. is trying to make it as good as possible.)
Battle Angel (James Cameron is currently making the 3 Avatar sequel as of now.)

  • Black Lagoon & Jourmaungand would be pretty easy to turn into live action films.

  • How would a Black Lagoon live-action movie work?

  • … Dood the entire thing is a tribute to over the top action & crime films... It's not really that hard to see how a LA version would work.

Just get a competent Director and your set! ;)

  • @Zethus:

How would a Black Lagoon live-action movie work?

How would it not work? It's already basically just an animated cover of John Woo-style action movies from the 90s.

Also, I'm legitimately surprised nobody jumped on a Hellsing movie during the vampire craze from a few years ago.

  • Samurai Champloo
    Hell Girl
    Ghost in the Shell

    and, just for giggles…
    Dominion Tank Police

  • I'll go a little further in the wayback machine here. Before someone does a live-action Black Lagoon, how about we get a live-action Gunsmith Cats. I would just hope for Hollywood to not whitewash the casting of Rally since surprise, she ain't white (she's half-indian). Aside from that, if they could really blow out the budget and spend what they want on production, then I'd wanna see the space western trio (Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, and Trigun) from the late 90s get live-action treatments too.

  • I'd settle for ONE at this point.

  • @LuckySeven:

    Half-Pakistani, actually.

  • I wish for one of Tekkaman Blade, Chobits, Angelic Layer, Gosick and oddly… Saber Marionette J!

  • What if Wes Anderson were to direct NGE live action film?

  • That would be …...interesting

Personally speaking though I think Tatami Galaxy would be more up his ally. NGE seems like Guilermo Del Toros thing.

Oh how about a XXXHolic movie directed by Tim Burton!? XD

  • None. Animation is a form of art that gives storytellers complete freedom to portray imaginative imagery, without the constraints of using footage shot in the real world. Thus the creative and often outlandish character designs and plots of most anime only work when being portrayed in cartoon form. In a live action film, they end up looking unbelievably fake and jarring. Animation is animation and live action is live action. The results of them crossing over are usually stupendous failures – I always use the live-action Scooby Doo movie as an example -- because the are both fundamentally different forms of art.

There is really no reason for a live action version of an animated work to exist, besides misguided commercialism. Such attempts could never capture the feeling of the original work, which ultimately should be good enough on its own. In closing, let me quote the Nostalgia Critic from his review of The Last Airbender seeing as it sort of touches on the sentiment I am trying to express:

The movie is awful, the acting is awkward, the writing beyond lazy, and it fails both trying to be a faithful adaptation and a standalone movie. But it could never be a standalone movie because there's only one Avatar: the series. It was perfectly paced, perfectly performed, perfectly animated. It was that rare anomaly that, chances are, can never be recreated. And there's no reason to change it. It's like trying to make an opera by Mozart better – you can't do it. Every note is where it needs to be.

  • It's true many times you take an animation and make it live action it sucks. But keep in mind some anime are made to for a live action movie feel (again series like Black Lagoon & Jourmangaund). So it's not impossible to do decent adaptions of all content.

Also I do agree animation as a whole is far more creative then live action and many times can be more outlandish. As for creative character designs in anime, those have arguably increasingly become a rarity as many use simmilar designs, these days a genaric anime girl could be from one of 100s of series, anime really is suffering from a lack of good visual diversity & stylization. But that's a rant for another time

Anime like Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo could probably work with the right budget and director. If Marvel can successfully adapt comic characters to the big screen, no reason someone can't do the same for anime, but yes they would have to tread very carefully.

  • One can dream.

  • @7jaws7:

    One can dream.

Guillermo del Toro x Madoka. Strangely enough, I could probably see this happening.

  • Madoka Magica Directed By Guillermo del Toro.

  • Recently, my sister is unusual.

  • Hope for the best, then.

Because I'll bet that's about as close as you'll get. ~_^
