Favorite Animation Studio

  • So for the past 8-10 months I have been researching periodically about different animation studios and watching some of their shows/movies to get a feel for their animation styles. By doing this I have come to prefer the shows some studios do over others and have come to really like on studio in particular. So I have wondering what other studios other people like. So my question is what are your favorite studios and what shows/movies have they done that you really enjoyed? I am going to ask people exclude studio Ghibli from their list since so many people know about them.

Ufotable: The Garden Of sinners (movie) and Fate/Zero (TV). By far my favorite studio

Arms: Eflin Lied (TV) and Kite (OVA). I just love how this studio that did Hentai is now doing a show that has mild fanservice.

SHAFT: Bakemonogatari (TV) and Madoka Magica (TV). Really like their style and find their mouth flaps very weird. watch Nisekoi to see what i mean.

Production I.G.: Ghost In The Shell (All Animated works), Blood+ (TV), FLCL* (OVA), Beast Player Erin (TV) and Pycho Pass (TV). Too many great works to choose from

Go Hands: K (TV) and Mardok Scramble (Movie). Very pretty animation work

J.C. Staff: A Certain Scientific Railgun (TV), Toradora (TV), R.O.D (OVA,TV), and Witch Craft Works (TV). Some of my favorite shows are made by them.

Bones: FMA (TV), Soul Eater (TV), Darker than Black (TV), Cowboy Bebop (Movie) and Space Dandy (TV) and Ouran High School Host Club (TV). Great quality of animation with every show and great stories.

Gainax: Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV), Corpse Princess (TV) Medaka Box (TV) and FLCL* (OVA). Crazy awesome shows with a very unique style of animation

A-1 Pictures: Sound of the Sky (TV), SAO (TV), and Fairy Tail (TV). Very pretty Animation and lots of shows I still need to watch

Studio Madhouse: Black Lagoon (TV), Redline (movie), Batoom (TV), Trigun (TV), and Hellsing Ultimate 5-7 (OVA), enough said.

Kyoto Animation: Lucky Star (TV), The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzamiya (TV), Beyond The Boundary and Free! (TV). Lots of great works and such beautiful animation.

  • J.C.Staff, easily. They have some misses, but when they hit, it's spectacular. Pet Girl of Sakurasou, Bakuman, Toradora!, Index/Railgun, Little Busters!, Maid-Sama! - the list goes on and on

My #1 complaint, though, is that they're pretty awful at OP/ED decisions. Quite a few of them make up my "worst of" list

  • I enjoy a fair amount of Gainax & Madhouse works. Also like Studio Trigger. But over all at this point I care more about individual shows then the studio behind them, since everbody puts out both gold & garbage

  • @Soundmonkey44:

But over all at this point I care more about individual shows then the studio behind them, since everbody puts out both gold & garbage

Pretty much this; a perfect example is ARMS with great shows like Queen's Blade and Samurai Girls, but real stinkers like Elfen Lied and Master of Martial Hearts.

As far as studios go, it just so happens that I like a fair bit of anime done by Madhouse and I have to admit; SHAFT put together some pretty wild stuff.

Aside from that, I still look at shows from a case by case basis.

  • P.A. Works has easily risen to the top for me, highly polished and they have some of the best looking nature backgrounds of any studio. The studio does a lot of behind the scenes work which I respect, but their own work like Hanasaku and Angel Beats are easily my top favorite anime series.
Kyoto Animation and GAINAX are close behind, but given the choice it's pretty easy for me.

  • Termite Terrace. ~_^

  • I don't so much follow studios so much as specific people attached to them. Most major studios have several production teams and can vary wildly between them. Though I guess if I had to rank them:

SHAFT - Let's face it, Akiyuki Shinbo basically is Shaft at this point. His auteur thumbprint is pretty heavy. At the very least anything made by Shaft will at least be fun to look at.

Bones - The studio formed by the ex-Sunrise alumni largely responsible for Cowboy Bebop. They've produced a ton of great original works and aome of the most beloved manga adaptations of all time.

P.A. Works - One of my favorite up-and-coming studios. They've made a name for themselves with breathtakingly gorgeous background art.

Production IG - One of the oldest and most reputable studios. I think they've declined in recent years, but there's no denying the sheer volume of good anime they've produced.

  • @Renzokuken:

    s
I do agree that Akiyuki Shinbo is Shaft. I am watching Ef: Tales of memories and even though he didn't Direct it his finger prints are all over it.

  • Going strictly on the quality of the visuals they produce:
MADHOUSE - the only studio that inspires me to watch a show just because of the studio attached to it, though some times they cut corners (eg: Princess Resurrection).
Satelight - the only anime studio to make heavy use of CG in anime not look like crap. CG King, they are.

J.C. Staff has been involved with shows that I like, but ever since Melody of Oblivion I have been extremely leery of them as they have no qualms about awkwardly reusing animation.

  • Gonzo:I really don't care for any of gonzo newer anime but i love there older titles like Vandread, Speed Grapher, Welcome to the N.H.K, and Rosario + Vampire.
Madhouse: Every anime madhouse touch look amazing. Some of my favor titles by madhouse are Boogiepop Phantom, Chaos;Head, Chobits, Highschool of the Dead, Redline, and Summer Wars.
Anime International Company: Produced two of my favorite anime titles of all time (Heaven's Lost Property and Haganai)
Bones: produced some of my favorites anime. Like Fullmetal Alchemist, Darker than Black, and Un-Go

They recycle animation between shows as well. There's a scene in Little Busters! of Kurugaya pitching a baseball and hitting Masato in the face during some random montage. She uses the exact same animation (redrawn, of course, and a slight adjustment to her hair and arm placement) as this scene of Ami throwing a basin at Taiga in Toradora!

I wish I still had the picture of the two side-by-side. It's not something you can casually notice, but I had just so happened to watch that Toradora scene the day before I watched the LB! episode of Kurugaya doing the same thing and noticed the reused animation

In a sense, it's actually kind of impressive that they managed to find and pull an inconsequential bit of animation from a show four years prior, with 30 broadcasted shows separating the two, just to save a little time when putting together a random montage. I can't help but admire the lengths they go to in order to cut corners

  • Don't care what anybody else makes - KyoAni will always be my favorite studio. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya and Kanon are 3rd and 4th on my list of favorite anime, respectively, and oh yeah, there's this thing called Clannad. K-On Movie was really good, too. And although they haven't really been putting out the same kind of quality as they have been 8 years ago, I'm hearing some decent things about Chuunibyou - gonna have to pick that up when it becomes available.

Bones was sort of my gateway studio, after Soul Eater and FMA. And in the last year I've really grown fond of Shaft/Shinbou.

  • KyoAni- mainly cause of their Key Adaptions especially Clannad its one of my favorite SoLs along with Free! (well its sports, but mostly SoL).

Sunrise-cause when it comes to mecha they are the best studio to turn to. Code Geass R1 and Gundam 00 (both seasons) are my most re-watched anime ever.

GoRa/Go Hands - K was so beautiful so I had to buy the bluray/DVD combo so when I get an HD TV I can watch it with my PS3. Heck even the DVD looks spectacular I can't wait to see 1080P. xD I haven't seen the other series they worked on forgot what it was called, but I heard it wasn't that good so I didn't bother with it.

I think P.A Works done Nagi no Asukara? I really love that series amazing story plus the art is probably the best I've seen the pas couple seasons pure scenery porn. I think they are doing Glasslip too? I can't wait to see how they will animate the glass! They also did Hanasaku Iroha which was another pretty good series too.

Production I.G made Suisei no Gargantia which I loved even though it wasn't technically a mecha series more like sci-fi and also Psycho Pass which has one of the best main heroines I have ever seen next to Oscar Francois de Jarjeyes.

@op: A-1 Pictures animation is the derpiest I have ever seen from any animation studio. Togainu no Chi is the most prime example of this. Its total garbage. Then again when it comes to battle shounen the quality is either terrible or at least decent enough. A-1 Pictures however does do good with SoL series like Working! and Gin no Saji and originals like AnoHana.

  • Definitely Bones and Madhouse. Fullmetal Alchemist and the Hunter x Hunter are two of my most favorite manga/anime series, and their respective studios went above and beyond when adapting them.

  • @Haru:

They have done a few. They did an Ecchi show called Princess Lover, a movie trilogy called Mardock Scramble, a show that is nothing but crude sex jokes called Seitokai Yakuindomo, and a sci-fi show called Coppelion. Their best by far is K and I would put Mardock Scramble as there second best if you are into cyber punk. Coppelion can be skipped.

  • I dont really have a favorite studio. However I,G, - Bones -Studio Ghibli have made some wonderful anime.

  • @mtyr:

Now now, don't let Miyazaki hear you, he doesn't consider his works "anime" his stuff is just animation or art. XD. . Is it wrong I love how much disdaine that man has for TV anime XD

  • Personally, I think these studios have produced many great works:
    P.A. Works,
    MADHOUSE Studios,
    Bones,
    Gonzo,
    and Production I.G.

  • No one had mentioned Tatsunoko. I must correct this in the name of Fuhrer D-Boy.

Tatsunoko, Bones and Madhouse would be mine.

  • Favorites:

    1. Madhouse (Black Lagoon, Beck, Claymore, Highschool of the Dead, and many MANY more great shows)
    2. Sunrise (the mecha king has the Gundam and Code Geass franchises and a bunch of other stuff)
    3. UFO Table (For their excellent Type/Moon adaptations like Garden of Sinners and Fate/Zero)
    4. Production IG (For Ghost in the Shell: SAC, Psycho Pass, Eden of the East, Moribito and a bunch more.)
    5. J. C. Staff (Also made a number of my favorites like Ai Yori Aoshi, Ghost Hunt, Zakuro, and the Shana series)

Honorable mention goes to Studio Rikka. I love everything they've made but they've only made 5 things to date (Time of Eve, Time of Eve: The Movie, Pale Cocoon, Aquatic Language, and Patema Inverted).

    My Personal S*** list:
Gainax (This studio always manages to screw up every good thing they make somehow and end up disappointing me, usually with the ending.)

  • Mine is studio 4°C.
