Best 2017 Character Tournament Discussion

  • Welcome to the Best 2017 Character Tournament, where you decide on the best characters from series of the past year. The nomination process will last from now until 10:00 p.m. EST February 10, and the main tournament will commence the next day.

Here are the basic rules for this tournament:

    1. Eligible series must have begun and/or ended in 2017, and must have a maximum confirmed episode length of 104 episodes for series that began in January, 91 episodes for series that began in April, 78 episodes for series that began in July, and 65 episodes for series that began in October. Series with discontinuous seasons or split cours are allowed, but only the episodes that aired in the past year will be taken into consideration. Also OVA's are allowed if more than one episode aired in 2017, but stand-alone movies are not.

    2. Eligible characters must have appeared in at least two episodes that aired in 2017. Again, characters from series with discontinuous seasons or split cours are allowed, but only if said characters appeared in episodes that aired in the past year.

    3. You can nominate characters from as many series as you wish. A single person can only nominate a particular character once. Nominations should be put in the following format:

      Character name, Anime title

Please separate your nominations by gender, as there will be a men's and a women's bracket; the two brackets will be running concurrently. Multiple nominations for the same character from different parties are encouraged, as they will be taken into account for the seeding process. Any ties after the nomination process ends will be broken by random draw.

    1. A single person can nominate a maximum of four male and four female characters from the same series. Also, a maximum of four characters from a single series will be allowed into a single bracket. If after the nomination process ends there are more than four male or four female characters from a single series nominated, the top four of each gender after resolving ties will be given priority, and all others will be excluded from the final seeding process. The 32 characters from each gender with the most nominations will be selected for the tournament.

    2. The way the single-elimination tournament itself will play out will be very post-intensive. Matches will play like a typical sporting event, with each post counting as one point. You may vote only once per match. You must post your vote, as well as the current score after taking your vote into account. For example:

Person 1 votes for character A:
      Vote for character A:
      Character A - 1
      Character B - 0

Person 2 votes for character B:
      Character A - 1
      Character B - 1

As you can see, if you do not post a comment about your vote, you may highlight your vote in the score tally instead. Once you post, you cannot change your vote. However, if for some reason multiple voters post at the same time, voters are allowed to check their score tallies and can edit them if they are incorrect. The character who reaches ten points first, or the highest score after 24 hours, wins and advances to the next round. If after 24 hours there is a tie, the character who reached the tying point first wins.

    1. After the semifinals of each bracket, there will be a third-place match between the two losers before the finals. The final match is first to fifteen points within 24 hours.

Special thanks go to shoaibghori on the Crunchyroll forums for introducing this scoring system there.

Here is the tentative schedule for the tournament:
    February 11 - 14: First round (8 matches a day alternating between men's and women's brackets)
February 15 - 16: Second round (Men's bracket matches on Thursday, women's bracket matches on Friday)
February 17: Quarterfinals (Matches in both brackets running concurrently)
    February 19: Semifinals
    February 21: Third-place matches
    February 22: Finals

And TECHNICALLY I guess Nanachi goes under female? Even though it's not actually confirmed?

    Nanachi, Made in Abyss

  • @emdier Normally I'd ask you to remove Rin Matsuoka and Haruka Nanase, but seeing that there are two movies with the title Free: Timeless Melody that aired in 2017, I'll allow them.

And TECHNICALLY I guess Nanachi goes under female? Even though it's not actually confirmed?

THAT is more of a problem; according to the mangaka, Nanachi's gender is unknown. That character's kind of in the same situation as Hange Zoe from Attack on Titan.

So I'll put this up for a vote: should I classify the gender of Nanachi and Hange according to their seiyuus (both of which are female)? I'll give one week for anyone to answer; until then, I'll isolate any votes for those two characters from both bracket listings.

    Hermes - Kino's Journey

Oh boy, now here's the other end of the spectrum for my question about classifying certain characters: a talking, but otherwise, inorganic or inanimate object.

@emdier @korrailli Until I get a few answers to my aforementioned question, I can't include Nanachi or Hermes in the nominations list.

Personally, I would vote to go with female as that is the gender of the VA, and that was also what I thought Nanachi was when I was watching (It wasn't until looking more in to the show after that I realized it was more up in the air).

Just throwing this out there as a question as I'm still trying to figure a list, but how would you classify Kuromaru from UQ Holder. In that instance, the character has to eventually decide gender (both would technically fit the two episode guideline if I wanted to nominate both versions).

  • @pleco_breeder Oh geez, yet another gender-indeterminate character!

Actually, having read the part of the manga where this particular situation is discussed, I personally would classify Kuromaru as male. I haven't been keeping up to date with it, so I'm not sure if Kuromaru has chosen a permanent gender yet.

EDIT: According to the series' wiki, Kuromaru prefers to be identified as male for the time being, so that's how he'll be classified as for the tournament.

  • @GalaxyCrisis I'm not sure how to consider the other cases, but my own opinion (in the case of Kuromaru), because both genders are actually part of the series for a short time, would be to consider each "version" separate even though they are the same person. Likewise, I consider Kuromaru male, but it's not my judgement call to make. I just want to know how to list the character.

I will add that Hermes has a definitively masculine voice, but would technically be neutral.

Hermes is generally considered male. While Kino prefers to not be gendered (does that change anything for tournament), Hermes seems to be ok with male pronouns. Hermes is at least sentient, as are other motorrads.

For Nanachi, I did think of them as male at first, now, I am not really sure.

  • @SpacemanHardy HOLY CRAP, that's a really long list!!!!

  • @GalaxyCrisis Well I mean, I read the rules upwards and downwards, and you didn't specify any limitations when it came to the maximum number of characters we could nominate, so.... :\

  • @SpacemanHardy I wouldn't be so shocked (or slightly annoyed) if it weren't for the fact that a couple people nominated some gender-indeterminate characters this time around. I had to cut and paste several times to keep their entries separate from the main nominations lists as I was putting your nominations in; every time I thought I had enough space between them they'd fill up fast.

I didn't think nanachi would be annoying? I know a couple tournaments that have had them listed under best girl on other sites, didn't think it would be a huge deal.

  • @emdier No, I meant I was slightly annoyed because I had to do cut-and-paste multiple times on my list. I thought moving Nanachi and Hermes down ten lines would be enough, but it turns out SMH's nominations added close to thirty new characters for each gender.

Ah, gotcha, thanks! Definitely didn't wanna be a bother to you

  • So far, only four people have posted nomination lists, myself included. On the women's side, only Kino has three nominations, while on the men's side there are three characters with that number: Izuku, All Might, and Erwin.

As for my question about whether to classify gender-indeterminate characters based on their seiyuus, I've only gotten one definite answer (in the affirmative) so far. If the proposition passes, then Nanachi from Made in Abyss (and Hange Zoe from Attack on Titan, if any nominations are posted for that character) would be cast in the women's bracket, while Hermes the talking motorcycle would be classified as male for the tournament.

  • Hi,

Didn't you also want to nominate Koyuki Hinashi from Fuuka? ;-)

  • A week has passed, and evidently my proposition has passed. So for the purposes of this tournament, Nanachi will be put in the women's bracket while Hermes will be in the men's bracket.

There's still a week left before the nomination period closes, so keep those lists coming.
