4th Annual MANLIEST Anime MEN of MANLINESS Tournament: Discussion Thread

  • "What makes a man?
Is it the power in his hands?
Is it his quest for glory?
    Give it all you got
    To fight to the top
So we can know your story?"

Webster's defines the word "manly" as one of two things: (1.) 'having qualities generally associated with a man', and (2.) 'appropriate in character to a man.'

Beyond the dictionary's description of the word, however, what does it really mean to be "manly"? Can such a phrase really even be summed up in mere words?

In the minds of many, "MANLINESS", especially when it comes to anime characters, isn't really something that can truly be defined by definition. Sure, masculinity, machismo, vigor and whatnot are all important parts of it, but there's something MORE to it than that.

    It requires passion, nobility, purpose.

It means standing up for a cause that you believe is right and just - even when it isn't.

It means giving it all and fighting to the bitter end - even if it breaks the laws of physics.

It's bulging muscles, scars, pompadours, giant eyebrows, and Go Nagai sideburns.

It's epic speeches, dramatic hand gestures, and screaming at the top of your lungs.

    It's doing the impossible.

    Breaking the unbreakable.

    Row Row. Fight tha powah.

In the end, a character is either MANLY… or they're not. Those who can tell the difference..... Just KNOW.

And it is with this understanding that I, SpacemanHardy, the one-and-only "Master of MANLINESS", hereby bring to you an event that truly needs no introduction, but I'll give it one anyway!! For the fourth year in a row, the FUNimation forums are coming together to celebrate our favorite characters in anime with the biggest biceps, the curliest mustaches, and the incredible, amazing ability to pee standing up:

    MEN!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, it gives me great honor to present to you….

    alt text

Last year, 256 MEN entered, but in the end it all came down to "The Unkillable Teacher" Korosensei vs. "The King of Conquerors" Rider. Although Rider put up a brave fight, he just couldn't match Korosensei's speed and momentum, and when the dust settled, the bright yellow tentacled assassin was crowned the undisputed champion!

And this year, we're doing it all over again!! 256 MEN will enter, but only one will reign supreme as the MANLIEST anime character of all time!!! (or at least 2017)

As a reminder of the terms and conditions surrounding this tournament, the rules for nominations are as follows:

1a. You may nominate 15 characters, only ONE per series. A grand total of only 5 characters from any given series will be selected for the final roster.
1b. NEW RULE: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is the one exception to the rule. As the series is split up into four distinct story arcs, I'll allow a grand total of 8 characters from the entire series, 2 characters from each arc being the maximum. Members of the Joestar family (Jonathan, Joseph, Jotaro, and Josuke) are given preferential treatment and are therefore automatically nominated. The other 4 slots are open to 1 non-Joestar character from each arc. Furthermore, forum users are only allowed to nominate ONE character from the entire series, so choose wisely.
    2. Characters MUST be from an anime (that was animated in Japan, just to be clear). They can be anime based on manga and video games, but they HAVE to be from the show itself. No manga/game-only characters allowed.
    3. Characters must (obviously) be male. Robots and animals are allowed, provided they are both sentient and obviously masculine. Not to be sexist or unfair to the ladies, but they have their own tournament already.
    4. It doesn't have to be a main character, but it must be one that is at least somewhat important to the plot of the show. No one-episode roles, cameos, or blink-and-you'll-miss-it types. (Sorry Jack Rakan, but you're still not allowed :P)
    5. Cruelty is NOT MANLY. No douchebags, jerkwads, axe-murderers, puppy-kickers, puppy-BURNERS, or overall evil sons-a-bitches allowed. Villains and anti-heroes are okay, as long as they are at least noble in their cause and have a good code of ethics. Kind-hearted jerks and irritating but well-meaning big brother types are okay too.
    6. Only MANLY MEN need apply. No sissy pretty boys, beautiful bishonen types, or overly moody, whiny, angsty teenagers. (That means YOU, Shinji!!!) Teens who show signs of blossoming manliness and/or especially noble traits and sensibilities are allowed. Characters who start out whiny and pathetic but gradually become more manly over the course of the show are also acceptable (depending on the character in question, of course).
    7. No Kirito. Seriously. Because f**k that guy. -_-

    (cont.)

  • Now before we begin, let's go over how voting in the rounds will go down:

    • Rounds 1 and 2 will consist of 4-person free-for-all matches, with the best 2 out of 4 proceeding to the next round. Each voter will choose two out of the four characters whom they wish to see move forward. Please note that your poll vote CANNOT BE CHANGED once you have made your decision. Any "cute stuff" like changing your posted vote at the last minute is frowned upon and will result in a paddlin'. And believe me, I'll be watching, so no funny business.

    • From round 3 and up, the matches will consist of 1-on-1 title bout matches. An official bracket will be set up at this point to gauge the contestants' progress.

    • In the case of a tie in votes, the decision will come down to a coin toss.

Also remember, you can only vote ONCE. Changing your vote is absolutely out of the question, so you need to think long and hard about who you want to vote for. Part of being a real MAN is making difficult decisions and living with the consequences, so THINK BEFORE YOU PUSH THAT BUTTON. Your vote may just be the deciding factor of whether your candidate wins or loses.

And again, let me refer back to the title of the tournament and remind you that it's not a popularity contest. Sure, vote for the characters you like, but also take into consideration which contestant is well and truly the MANLIEST of them all. This isn't the "GUY I kinda sorta LIKE the MOST" tournament, after all.

    …No pressure or anything. ~_^

  • One last thing before we start. Let's go over a few "Rules of Conduct" for all those in the forums who wish to participate:

Rule 1: NO CHEATING. If I see any evidence of "ballot stuffing" or using bots or alternate accounts to illegally boost a character's votes, I WILL find out who the perpetrator is and they WILL be punished. This might also cause the character in question to be ousted from the tournament altogether, and nobody wants that.

Rule 2: NO BAD SPORTSMANSHIP. I saw a lot of this going on during past tournaments, and I for one will absolutely not stand for it. By all means, please feel free to argue and debate amongst yourselves all you wish, as long as said arguments remain civil. Also feel free to badmouth or talk trash about the characters themselves if you like. But absolutely NO insulting the other forum members or their tastes in characters or anime. If I see any evidence of such behavior happening, I will not hesitate to give you a stern warning and, if need be, ban you from further participation in the tournament.

Rule 3: HAVE FUN! Remember, at the end of the day, this is just a stupid little forum tournament. Don't take it so seriously. Some of your favorite characters are bound to lose, and sure, it's okay to get a little bummed, but really, we're all just here to have fun and hang out on the forums. And besides, there's always next year. ~_^

And as always, one last reminder: Before you decide that the future is set, remember:

It's not about who's strongest, fastest, smartest, or most popular...

    It's about who's MANLIEST.

Good luck to all our contestants, and may the best MAYUN win!! :)

  • Now that the discussion thread is open, please feel free to talk about the upcoming tournament as much as you like. The matches start proper tomorrow night (they would've started tonight, if I didn't have to work so freakin' late -_-).

  • I suppose this will take place before this year's Amazons of Anime Tournament, right?

  • Neat to see the actual benefit of the lack of polls is that as long as we bold clearly who we pick, we can vote for 2 people in the first two rounds!

  • IT HAS BEGUN.

Sorry about the long delay, folks. I'll try my best to keep matches going nightly for at least the first two rounds from here on out.

  • The results of Day 1:

    Loser - Dimension W
    Kotaro Amon - Tokyo Ghoul
    Oda Nobunaga - Drifters
    Nicholas D. Wolfwood - Trigun
    Tomomi Masaoka - Psycho-Pass
    Red-Haired Shanks - One Piece
Tetsuo Takahashi - Interviews with Monster Girls
    Van Flanel - Escaflowne

    Hajime Sugoroku - Nanbaka
    Jet Black - Cowboy Bebop

Hajime wins over Piccolo in the coin flip.

  • A hard fought battle for those who won.....alongside some very upsetting notable defeats all in the first round.

    Mourn for the fallen, friends.

  • Just a quick heads up: My laptop needs to have some work done it to get it running properly again, AND I'm going to be away for the weekend at Anime Blues Con. So the tournament might have to be put on hold for a few nights until everything gets back up to speed.

Sorry for any delays in advance.

  • @SpacemanHardy I've got a slight problem with my laptop too; let's just hope it can be remedied by simply replacing the battery, and that it's not more complicated than that.

EDIT: Yep, replacing the battery was all it took; I can't believe I've had my current laptop for five years now.
