Best 2016 Character Tournament Discussion

  • I'm starting my tournament a little early since tonight is the Super Bowl.

Welcome to the Best 2016 Character Tournament, where you decide on the best characters from series of the past year. The nomination process will last from now until 10:00 p.m. EST February 18, and the main tournament will commence the next day.

Here are the basic rules for this tournament:

    1. Eligible series must have begun and/or ended in 2016, and must have a maximum confirmed episode length of 104 episodes for series that began in January, 91 episodes for series that began in April, 78 episodes for series that began in July, and 65 episodes for series that began in October. Series with discontinuous seasons or split cours are allowed, but only the episodes that aired in the past year will be taken into consideration. (For example, only part 3 of Durarara!!x2 will be taken into consideration for this tournament.) Also OVA's are allowed if more than one episode aired in 2016, but stand-alone movies are not.

    2. Eligible characters must have appeared in at least two episodes that aired in 2016. Again, characters from series with discontinuous seasons or split cours are allowed, but only if said characters appeared in episodes that aired in the past year.

    3. You can nominate characters from as many series as you wish. A single person can only nominate a particular character once. Nominations should be put in the following format:

      Character name, Anime title

Please separate your nominations by gender, as there will be a men's and a women's bracket; the two brackets will be running concurrently. Multiple nominations for the same character from different parties are encouraged, as they will be taken into account for the seeding process. Any ties after the nomination process ends will be broken by random draw.

    1. A single person can nominate a maximum of four male and four female characters from the same series. Also, a maximum of four characters from a single series will be allowed into a single bracket. If after the nomination process ends there are more than four male or four female characters from a single series nominated, the top four of each gender after resolving ties will be given priority, and all others will be excluded from the final seeding process. The 32 characters from each gender with the most nominations will be selected for the tournament.

    2. The way the single-elimination tournament itself will play out will be more post-intensive than many of the tournaments on the forums here. Matches will play like a typical sporting event, with each post counting as one point. You may vote only once per match. You must post your vote, as well as the current score after taking your vote into account. For example:

Person 1 votes for character A:
      Vote for character A:
      Character A - 1
      Character B - 0

Person 2 votes for character B:
      Character A - 1
      Character B - 1

As you can see, if you do not post a comment about your vote, you may highlight your vote in the score tally instead. Once you post, you cannot change your vote. However, if for some reason multiple voters post at the same time, voters are allowed to check their score tallies and can edit them if they are incorrect. The character who reaches ten points first, or the highest score after 24 hours, wins and advances to the next round. If after 24 hours there is a tie, the character who reached the tying point first wins.

    1. After the semifinals of each bracket, there will be a third-place match between the two losers before the finals. The final match is first to fifteen points within 24 hours.

Special thanks go to shoaibghori on the Crunchyroll forums for introducing this scoring system there.

Here is the tentative schedule for the tournament:
    February 19 - 22: First round (8 matches a day alternating between men's and women's brackets)
February 23 - 24: Second round (Men's bracket matches on Thursday, women's bracket matches on Friday)
February 25: Quarterfinals (Matches in both brackets running concurrently)
    February 27: Semifinals
    March 1: Third-place matches
    March 2: Finals

  • @emdier I know I'm probably going to get a lot of protests about this one, but Your Name is a stand alone movie, so it is not eligible for this tournament. Kizumonogatari, on the other hand, is considered an OVA since it's in several parts, so that's in.

Darn, I thought that might happen for Your Name and A Silent Voice, figured it was worth a try though :(

  • @emdier I just noticed you have Kamisama Kiss in your nominations too; the second season aired in 2015, not 2016, so that's also out.

@emdier I just noticed you have Kamisama Kiss in your nominations too; the second season aired in 2015, not 2016, so that's also out.

Kamisama Kiss had a 4 part OVA with two episodes airing in 2016, as well as an extra episode in 2016 as well... Do those not count?

Yup those two are about all that matters.

I mean I guess Megumin and Bakugo (Konosuba and Academia) are worth getting in but meh.

Erased was just a stand-out anime imo.

  • @classyspartan Only four characters per gender per series, so get rid of one of the Nanbaka guys.

@darthrutsula40 You're lucky I'm not citing you for not separating your nominations by gender. However, are you nominating Megumin and Katsuki too or not?

    Yes.

And I figured since I was only putting four forth, even though I think only Megumin wasn't nominated already, I didn't think it was necessary to separate them.

(I scrolled up and noticed she was so....)

  • So far, we've got four characters in both the men's and women's categories with four nominations each.

The top four guys are Satoru from Erased and Izuku, Katsuki, and All Might from My Hero Academia, while each of the top four girls represent a more diverse array of series: Sachiko from Erased, Megumin from KonoSuba, Rem from Re: Zero (who I had a feeling would get quite a few noms), and little Tsumugi from Sweetness & Lightning.

i think this looks good. i might make a couple of adjustments if i think of better nominees, but that's looking unlikely at this point

  • @Heavenspiercing Just because someone else nominated a particular character doesn't mean you cannot nominate that same character yourself. If you do think of more nominees, please make an addendum to your existing post; if you decide to retract some, make a new post saying which ones you've rescinded or strike through the ones you've taken out in your existing post so I can adjust my spreadsheet accordingly.

  • It's a week into the nomination period, and so far three men and three women have five nominations each.

Looking forward to more people posting their nominations, but if this is all I'm going to get, I might have to cut the nomination period down to one week next year.

I think part of it may be some users haven't returned to the forum yet, hopefully by next year the user base will be bigger.

Looking forward to the tournament starting though!

  • Figure I should ask so I know and / or can try to think of more nominees to add but how many characters did you plan to have for each bracket?
