Ok I recieved my DVD, but I was lead to believe that the short film that translates to 'Giant God Warrior' or something was to be included. I've looked everywhere on the DVD, from the messed up scene names on scene selection, in extras, in setup (which for some reason has 2 sets of English subtitles- one set called "Home Video" version and one called "Theatrical". Why would either set of subs be different when it's a translation of the same language? Also, why don't any of them actually follow the dialogue. I've seen a lot of complaints that there aren't any trailers which I found ridiculous, it seems aside from the "Rebuild" feature the other two had, all they had were trailers. I'm also disappointed that the book, while re-enforcing my personal attitude about the movie vs. the (seemingly) popular opinion that 3.33 ruined the series, really includes nothing but a bunch of drawings of characters and evas/vehicles from different angles.
Overall I bought the DVD for the movie, which I enjoyed, so I can't complain too much, but there are some strange goings on. For those who say 3.33 ruined Eva because it's totally different I have a few things to say, and I say this with no aggression or intent to instigate arguments or invalidate opinions. I've noticed the biggest complaint is how it's wildly different than the series was, which was of course the film maker's intention. If you wanted to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion without significant changes, then re-watch the series. I mean, while it's frustrating to wait so long between releases (apparently the "demons" that Anno was dealing with that caused the dark atmosphere and gave NGE it's overall concept returned while working on the rebuild, despite thinking he had dealt with those issues, resulting in him taking a break from Eva) it's my opinion that if the series had been allowed to run it's full course, rather than the studio rather abruptly cutting the funding and shutting it down allowing I think 4 more episodes to resolve the series, this is where it would have gone. I mean, Misato's behavior and suspicion of NERV and the organization's intentions not to mention Ritsuko's breakdown suggest that if the "Third Impact" was cut short and life continued, they most certainly would have splintered off and gone against NERV. Also, the series wasn't given time to allow Kaworu's character to develop as they had to rush toward a resolution. I, for one, while far from a homophobe, am glad that Shinji and Kaworu had more time to develop a friendship, rather than rushing their relationship in what appears homoerotic in nature. I don't know if that was the original intention, or if the shower scene and the "I love you" giving off that vibe was merely a result of building an intense relationship and trust between two characters in a single relationship.
Either way, until (if) the fourth film finally arrives, we won't really know if 3.33 improved or destroyed Evangelion as there's yet to be a resolution. Until then, though, I'm happy to see something different and new, that still follows the concept the original provided.
Also, just to reinforce my point about the DVD release, I am severely disappointed the short film doesn't appear though it was promised to us. Unless it's an easter egg or something I haven't found. I also find the Scene Selection menu to be very sloppy and confusing, giving no indication what scene you're selecting.
Well, to be fair, I think that the Evangelion Relationship between Shinji and Rei are complex and somehow questionable. The reason why a Shinji and Asuka relationship won't work is that they are not same in terms of piloting their Evangelion units and personality. It;s becoming more clear that in Evangelion 3.33 that they won't agree with each other. Asuka is loud and fearless while Shinji is shy and quiet (and also a wimp lol). Rei is emotionless and cold to Shinji at first, but she slowly warms up as much to protect him from any angel attack, even when her life's on the line. I know that Rei Q is a restart to Rei's personality in 3.33, but I accept it. Shinji will realize sooner or later in the fourth (If it even happens) that Rei will protect him no matter if she's not his Rei (Spoiler Alert). I believe that Rei Q will warm up to Shinji more than her previous counterpart in 3.33.
All of us fans of Evangelion only have to do is wait until 4.0 is revealed to the world (hopefully). I'm expecting more from Hideaki Anno in the following months (or years) to put in some effort into the finale that the fans have been waiting for.
