Ayako Kono led the film’s production in her first primary directorial role at A-1 Pictures, joined by Kento Toya (character designer on Sword Art Online Alicization) and composer Yuki Kajiura.

The original series’ cast, including Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Haruka Tomatsu, reprised their roles, with Inori Minase (Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-) joining the cast as Mito, an anime-original character.

Sword Art Online Progressive, a retelling of the series’ Aincrad arc, was first published by author Reki Kawahara in 2012 and now spans eight volumes, each covering a single floor in the game. A second film has already been announced for 2022.
