The world of parenthood is a magical, beautiful and often challenging place. It has its highs and its lows, similar to the world of anime. Of course, that’s without the magical outfit changes. Wouldn’t that make getting ready in the morning so much easier?

As a single parent to an 11-year-old son, I sometimes use anime as a way to connect with him. Anime is something we mutually enjoy and is a great medium to discuss subjects without the pressure of feeling too serious. The aim of A Mom’s Guide to Anime is to use anime to help you navigate the world of parenthood.

This month’s focus: What to expect when you’re expecting. A Mom’s Guide to Anime is officially two years old! That means it’s going through some changes as it grows and discovers more about itself…or it will become consumed with power now that it can stand on its own and speak in sentences!

That’s a lot of advice in two years, but so much of it has been aimed at those of us who already have children. But what about parents to be? That’s right—this month’s guide is all about what to expect when you’re expecting.

We’ll dig through some characters who personify some of those changes, or quite literally go through them! Yes, all pregnancies are different, so just think of this guide as a fun way to get even more excited about becoming a parent!

Nesting like Levi from Attack on Titan

There comes a particular time during pregnancy where you might feel a strong urge to…clean? This is called nesting. Think of it as your body’s way of saying, “We’ve got to get ready for this baby!”

And in Attack on Titan, Levi is known for being an expert cleaner, both metaphorically (when you think about it) and literally! Levi suits up for the role in a large apron, headscarf, gloves and a tool belt stocked with everything he needs to take on the greatest of all evil—dirt and germs.

But it’s not just cleaning. You might get the urge to build things, master the art of feng shui or re-paint basically every surface of your home. It’s important to welcome your baby into a new and safe home, but I like to think of this as us secretly worrying our baby will judge us.

If you find yourself doing this, remember that you don’t have to do every project at once. Even Levi himself needs to take a break to take down some Titans every once in a while.

Cravings like Lina Inverse in The Slayers

It’s well known that pregnancy can also make you very hungry. In fairness, you’re eating for at least more than one, so your body needs those nutrients!

Of course, you know my example for this one has to be the powerful, the goofy, the selfless Lina Inverse from The Slayers. And while Lina might not be pregnant, she is eating to recharge her abilities and provide nourishment for a long journey.

At the end of the day, whether to recharge your powers or because you’re creating actual life, treat yourself to that Italian hoagie with extra mayo at 3 a.m. You’ve earned it. OK, that last bit may have been more about my pregnancy than yours.

Changes like Chi Chi in Dragon Ball Z

Lots of things can change during pregnancy! And when they say things like emotions do, well, they are not joking. When I was pregnant with my son, I attempted to make cookies from scratch. They turned out horrible. So what did I do? I locked myself in a bathroom and cried for an hour.

I thought, “If I can’t make cookies, how can I raise a baby?” True story. So my mind goes to the most incredible mom, Chi Chi from Dragon Ball Z! One minute, she’s caring and loving, and the next, she’s in a rage, then in tears or laser-focused on Gohan and his studies. But emotional roller coasters are OK!

This time can be challenging because your loved ones might not know exactly how to support you, so find the things that help you center yourself! Or, if you’re like Chi Chi, you could square up with Goku.

Energy fluctuations like Mako Mankanshoku in KILL la KILL

Mako Mankanshoku from KILL La KILL has a bubbly and hyperactive personality. She’s very motivated and fearless. She can also fall asleep anywhere at any time. However, her preferred sleeping location is school.

Just as Mako’s energy levels fluctuate, so will yours during this time of expecting. You’ll find you have all the energy in the world in one moment, and then none in the next. I once fell asleep folding laundry.

Again, all this is normal. Remember, you’re not just sharing food or water but energy! It’s important to let your body sleep in and rest when you need to. Hopefully, that’s not in an awkward place like the laundry, but take advantage of the highs and lows!
