Blue Period Anime Adaptation Draws Up Second Key Visual, Additional Cast

Lights, camera, art! We’re here to get you brushed up on the upcoming anime adaptation of the award-winning coming-of-age manga Blue Period, which just revealed a special key visual and a streak of additional cast members.

The key visual is collaboration between studio Seven Arcs, which is producing the TV anime adaptation, and contemporary painter Meguru Yamaguchi.

Additional cast members, which feature a number of industry newcomers, were also revealed with accompanying character visuals. From left to right:

Mayu Aoyagi as Maru Mori and Fumi Hirano (Urusei Yatsura) as Masako Saeki.

Masaya Fukunishi (MEGALOBOX 2: NOMAD) as Sumida, Shinichirou Kamio (HYPNOSIS MIC -Division Rap Battle- Rhyme Anima) as Koigakuro, and Tatsumaru Tachibana (The God of High School) as Utashima.

Mika Hiratsuka as Umino, Ikumi Hasegawa (How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom) as Shirai, Yuna Nemoto as Shirota, and Aoi Koga (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) as Yamamoto.

Previously announced main cast members also had their own character visual, which includes:

Hiromu Mineta (CESTVS -The Roman Fighter-) as Yatora Yaguchi, Yumiri Hanamori (Kageki Shojo!!) as Ryuji Ayukawa, Daiki Yamashita (My Hero Academia) as Yotasuke Takahashi, Kengo Kawanishi (Dr. STONE) as Haruka Hashida, and Yume Miyamoto (SING “YESTERDAY” FOR ME) as Maki Kuwana.

On the production side, Yuuji Kaneko (Josee, the Tiger and the Fish) joins Ken Nakamura on the all-important art director team alongside Mamio Ogawa and Mika Nakajima on art design. Ippei Inoue will be doing the music.

Koji Masunari, who previously led Kamichu!, will act as chief director, while Katsuya Asano (Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS) will direct the anime for Seven Arcs studio. Reiko Yoshida (Digimon Adventure: Our War Game) is writing and overseeing the scripts for the series. Rounding out the main staff is Tomoyuki Shitaya (Food Wars!) on character design.

Blue Period follows Yatora, the perfect high school student, who thinks his perfect life is rather dull and boring. That’s until one day he wanders into the art room, and a lone painting changes his life, compelling him to dive head-first into the world of art. If only Yatora knew how unforgiving the art world really is!

The Blue Period manga won the 13th Manga Taisho Awards in 2020, and was nominated the year before. It was also nominated for the 24th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2020, and it won the Best General Manga award in the 44th Kodansha Manga Awards in 2020.

The anime adaptation is currently scheduled to air in October this year.
