The JujuFes 2021 event in Japan this weekend revealed that the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen 0 anime film, based on the manga of the same name by Gege Akutami, would be releasing in Japanese theaters on December 24, later this year. There’s just no better Christmas present than the gift of anime!
A new teaser visual was also released, featuring central characters Rika and Yuta. The tagline reads, “Jujutsu Kaisen‘s origin—a story of love and curses.”
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was announced after the 24th episode of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime, which was broadcast on March 26. Studio MAPPA were confirmed to return for the film, and a teaser trailer was also released.
The original Jujutsu Kaisen 0 manga was published as a prototype in Jump GIGA before Jujutsu Kaisen‘s serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump a year later. The prequel story remains canon, though several character designs were altered and repurposed for the main series.
VIZ Media, who publishes the official English version, describes the manga as:
Yuta Okkotsu is a nervous high school student who is suffering from a serious problem—his childhood friend Rika has turned into a Curse and won’t leave him alone. Since Rika is no ordinary Curse, his plight is noticed by Satoru Gojo, a teacher at Jujutsu High, a school where fledgling exorcists learn how to combat Curses. Gojo convinces Yuta to enroll, but can he learn enough in time to confront the Curse that haunts him?
