Get ready for some monstrous news: the first volume of Kaiju No. 8 is crashing onto digital and physical bookshelves soon!
VIZ Media dropped the news on their Twitter account that they will release the first volume of the series in English sometime this fall.
Created by Naoya Matsumoto, Kaiju No. 8 received critical acclaim after passing 30 million views on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ service. The series began in July 2020 and is simultaneously publishing in English on the Manga Plus website and mobile app, as well as through VIZ Media.
Monsters known as “kaiju” have been terrorizing Japan and it’s up to the Japanese Defense Force to kill them. Childhood friends Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro join the force after witnessing and surviving their town’s destruction by the kaiju.
Both of them, however, play different roles—Mina is the popular commander of the Third Unit while Kafka is tasked with cleaning up dead kaiju as a member of Monster Sweeper Inc.
A turn of events leads Kafka into swallowing a tiny kaiju, which grants him the ability to turn into a kaiju himself. The Japanese Defense Force calls him “Kaiju No. 8”; he’s the first kaiju to escape from them. He’s still cognizant of his thoughts and actions but has superhuman strength, making him a threat just like any other kaiju.
But as Kafka applies to join up with the Japanese Defense Force, he has to hide his kaiju identity. After all, they don’t know he can switch between forms.
