Announced during a special socially-distanced livestream orchestra event for Free!, the teaser shows off some familiar faces from the series, and it’s capped off by a promotional poster featuring Haru Nanase, who looks determined and ready to dive back in! The trailer ended with “See you in 2021.”
The film was originally planned for release in 2020 and was timed, coincidentally, around the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. With the Olympics now postponed due to COVID-19, it looks as if the film and the games will both be in 2021!
This announcement also delivered news that the film’s director and staff are working hard to deliver a movie that meets fans’ high expectation for the series. The film will see Haruka and his teammates (Ikuya and Rin) challenge the world stage, something he’s never done before.
The most recent anime entry in the franchise was Free! -Road to the World- the Dream, which was a compilation of key moments from the anime series, Free! -Dive to the Future–, and serves as a bridge to the new anime film.
Free! -Iwatobi Swim Club– first premiered in 2013 and ran for 12 episodes. It was followed by Free! -Eternal Summer– the next year with an additional 13 episodes and OVA. The third season of the series, Free! -Dive to the Future–, premiered in 2018 with 12 episodes and an OVA.
