The world of parenthood is a magical, beautiful and often challenging place. It has its highs and its lows, similar to the world of anime. Of course, that’s without the magical outfit changes. Wouldn’t that make getting ready in the morning so much easier?

As a single parent to a 10-year-old son, I sometimes use anime as a way to connect with him. Anime is something we mutually enjoy and is a great medium to discuss subjects without the pressure of feeling too serious. The aim of A Mom’s Guide to Anime is to use anime to help you navigate the world of parenthood.

This month’s focus: Shows to relax with. When I find myself struggling to balance all of the craziness in the world right now, I stop and ask my son if he wants to watch anime. Of course, he’s tired of doing schoolwork, so it’s always a yes. For those few hours, we transport ourselves to the world of some of our favorite shows!

Since we haven’t yet mastered Goku’s instant transmission technique, here are recommendations for anime to sit back at home and relax with your family!

Koro Sensei Quest!

Koro Sensei Quest! is an adorable spin-off of the equally amazing Assassination Classroom. The show features the iconic Koro Sensei and the students of Class 3-E, but in a chibi style.

You’ll follow these adorable classmates as they work to hone the art of sword fighting or magic to defeat the evil Demon King: Koro Sensei himself. This show is hilarious, thanks in part to the series’ artistic style. If you have seen the main series, there are also plenty of inside jokes.

Despite its cute demeanor, Koro Sensei Quest! still has plenty of action, heartfelt moments and the subtle suspense to keep you watching. It’s the perfect show to dive into and relax with, and also a great introduction to the broader world of Assassination Classroom.

Cells at Work!

Cells at Work! is an anime about the trillions of cells that live inside the human body. No, seriously. Stick with me.

Now, it might seem like a hard sell because your kids are probably tired of all the educational stuff they have to watch, but hear me out. This series is certainly educational, but it’s also an excellent anime. You will be totally sold on the combination of likable cast, a teensy bit of romance and plenty of laughs.

What other anime you know turns a cold into a villain?! Cells at Work! transforms our everyday life into an anime spectacle. It’s a great series to turn on, chill out and learn a little something. Win-win, right?

APPARE-RANMAN!

APPARE-RANMAN! is a bit of a period piece, set in the late 19th century, when main character Appare and his cowardly samurai compatriot Kosame wind up in America after being adrift at sea.

In just these first few episodes, you’ll meet a handful of colorful characters, all primed to take part in the Trans-America Wild Race to win some major prize money. Of course, it won’t be a simple race, as Appare and Kosame will have to overcome rivals, bandits and unknown territory.

Gamers!

Gamers! is a comedy romance series about high school students who are all part of their school’s gaming club. The best part? Each member has a distinct personality!

In each episode, the group plays a different game, all the while navigating the complexities of high school life. But the key here for you and your teen are the relatable characters. You’ll find yourself reminiscing about your younger years, and your older kids can get a glimpse of what high school looks like, as well as puberty. The worst!

You can even play some of the games featured throughout the series in real life!

The Slayers

If you’re a longtime anime fan, chances are you’ve heard of The Slayers. This classic anime series follows Lina Inverse and her crew as they set out on adventures in a world packed with magic and monsters.

The Slayers feels like watching a role-playing game, with each character bringing along a unique backstory and motivations. Some want money, some want fame and some want lots of food.

And while the series has its mature moments, packed with comic relief, action and some gut-wrenching sequences, it’s definitely comfort food. Though you might want to save this one for watching with your older kids.
