This year marks the 20th anniversary of the One Piece anime, and it’s been a journey. An eventful, momentous, winding, emotional, hilarious incredible — and most importantly, worthwhile — journey.
One Piece began its official anime broadcast in Japan on October 20, 1999, and has since become a worldwide cultural phenomenon. Not bad for a ragtag group of pirates, huh, Straw Hats?
Since the start of 2019, there’s been no shortage of incredible One Piece content. The anime reached a milestone in broadcasting over 900 episodes as the Straw Hats entered the Land of Wano, TV specials came fast and furious, from Episode of East Blue to Adventure of Nebulandia and Funimation produced a 300+ episode re-watch podcast through One Piece at a Time.
Oh, did we mention you can turn yourself into a Straw Hat on Snapchat?!
There was even a One Piece anniversary panel at this year’s Anime Expo, complete with a special message from Mayumi Tanaka, the Japanese voice of Luffy! But — there’s more to come!
Let’s take a look at what these waning moments of 20th anniversary of One Piece will bring Luffy and his crew. Fret not, this journey appears to be far from over.
Sailing into 2020!
One Piece: Stampede
Wow, what to say about this packed-to-the-brim-with-amazing-character-moments film?! The Straw Hats and a whole slew of fan-favorite characters (Pandaman, anyone?) rush the big screen in a brand-new story direct from the One Piece mastermind, Eiichiro Oda.
The movie debuts in select theaters in North America on Oct. 24, and saying we’re pumped would be an understatement. Don’t forget to snag your tickets for the Pirate Festival! You might even win an exclusive art card featuring Oda-sensei’s art, just make sure to talk to your local theater for more details.
The return of the One Piece English dub
Yes, you read that correctly. The One Piece dub will return! Announced as part of Funimation’s celebration of the 20th anniversary, the English cast and crew are already hard at work on delivering the next batch of episodes.
Onward to the Punk Hazard arc! Check out the announcement video, featuring voice actors Colleen Clinkenbeard (Monkey D. Luffy) and Justin Cook (Director of Production at Funimation, Bellamy), below.
Where else to go, but back to the beginning? Simulcast viewers will know of Romance Dawn (Episode 907), which launched last night. This special episode builds upon the foundation of Oda-sensei’s original work, Romance Dawn, pre-dating One Piece.
It was originally published in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1996. Two versions of this story exist, and this brand-new episode is based on the second of those.
And so, thank you!
Thank you Oda-sensei, Toei Animation, and all of the One Piece nakama out there, always looking for another chance to set sail for adventure.
To more adventures! To more tears! To more laughs! To the next 20 years of One Piece! 🏴☠️
