We’ve saved the best for last. You’ve got the characters and basic idea of the story, so what else is there? Just a handful of fun tidbits, Easter Eggs, and more!
Why ‘the X’?
So why is the anime called Tales of Zestiria the X? A personal opinion is that the ‘X’ (note that it is pronounced as “cross,” not “x”) stands for “Crossovers”. This is mostly speculation, though. But because we’ll be having so much overlap with Tales of Berseria, and possibly other storylines, this makes the most sense. Interestingly enough, the purpose behind making Tales of Zestiria the X was a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Tales of franchise.
Ever wondered what’s up with the ‘next episode’ previews? Why it’s just the characters talking and being a bit silly? Well, that’s because it’s based off of little short scenes from the games called ‘skits’! Every Tales of game has skits where the characters have a short cinematic break to either discuss important details of your quest/mission/etc. or even fun little asides including mocking other characters’ cooking, clothing, commentary, etc. Unlike true cinematic scenes, there’s not a lot of movement or scenery. It’s just the characters of the skit making limited expressions and text. But a lot can still happen in these quick scenes! In the game these can be skipped over, but a lot of gamers try to collect them all because they have fun scenarios and sometimes give you more information about the characters and the world. There is also a theme of bath houses being talked about or visited…
When first watching Episode 0, the only main character to make an appearance was Alisha. Why? Could be it was just a way to set up the danger and storyline. But a theory is that it was a show of apology to the fans of the games. When Tales of Zestiria was first announced and presented to fans, Alisha was essentially sold as a main character. Special game content was created for her like special outfits, weapons, etc., and many fans were convinced she would be a huge part of the game. Unfortunately, Alisha was not as big of a main character as Rose and did not partake in a lot of the bigger aspects of the story.
So when fans wanted more Alisha, it seems Ufotable and Bandai thought the best way to do that was to have her be tormented and terrified. Just rip our hearts out, why don’t ya? But in all seriousness, the first episode gave a lot of insight into how Alisha was involved and how she ended up in the ruins where Sorey and Mikleo found her.
Just like with Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, the opening song for each game is always a big deal! Huge stars like BoA, Do As Infinity, Ayumi Hamasaki, Superfly, and more have performed the openings for the games, and they are always fantastic. That’s why having FLOW perform the anime opening was a big deal. But if you noticed, in Episode 5 “Dawn of Chaos,” a totally different opening/ending sequence played out. It was actually the opening from the Tales of Zestiria game! And, in Episode 6 “Velvet Crowe,” the music sequence shown is the opening for Tales of Berseria.
I want to start playing Tales of games…where do I start?
You can pick up any game from the series and just play! The storylines are not necessarily tied together, but there will always be inside jokes and Easter Eggs. Still, it is very friendly to new players. There are a few games that have sequels, so just be sure you’re not starting on one of those—luckily it’s pretty obvious to tell the difference. If you want to play them all, you may find it difficult since the games do not stay console consistent. Not to mention that the very first game was on the Super Famicom and Super Nintendo. Ports and re-releases for many of the games are available, but it can still be a challenge. For the most recent few, and it seems for the future games, they will be on PlayStation and PC.
