I doubt there will be a second season. Just because it was based on a US comic and it has been so many years since it has first came out.
That being said they could do another one. On the extras when they talked with the guys from Top Cow he stated rules the anime had to follow. One of which was that they Witchbalde couldn't be destroyed (or killed) because that goes against the comic. Which of course kind of leaves the ending up to debate, I was thinking it was destroyed until I watched the extras and heard that. I haven't read the comics so I do not know if the Witchblade disappears for years and comes back or not. Could be that too much power was drained from the Witchblade and now it will take time to regather.
That is where they can make another anime if they want. The story of it finding its next host and help clear up some of the story like what happened to all the girls that where produced (couldn't think of a better way to say it.) and what happened to everybody else.
Like I said at the top though I don't see it happening. Been too long and there have been other popular animes that never got a second season. (Berserk for one...now that ended on a cliff hanger.)
There could easily be a second season to Witchblade due to the fact that Riko is the potential genetic wielder of the blade. In Masane's attempt to destroy it along with her, it could have easily remained there where Riko obtains possession of it thus making her the rightful owner of the witchblade
There should be either a reboot on the same story as this maybe even exactly like it. Like starting from the beginning where they are getting off the boat.
Or maybe go right were it left off. Like Masane floating in the water heading to the shore with a changed Witchblade that is orange-
Spoiler: Highlight to view
(orange because of the color change when she made the light at the top of Tokyo Tower in the end of ep. 24)
-due to her finding the meaning to it and it being happy.
Also she should have her memory back so we specifically know just how the hell she got the Witchblade no just what we saw in the opening.
Also after the new seasons are done.....if you guys actually see and agree with this, make something for Rikoho like something with that Cloneblade lady took off of her ex's secretary's hands or the Witchblade it's self.
But to my question, Just what the hell was the light. I refuse to believe that that was just a beam that killed all of them including the Witchblade and Masane.

The Witchblade is invincible it can not be destroyed. Masane was also in Witchblade form, she would of healed quickly if not instantly.
Above all of this the Witchblade have gone to Rikoho anyway
Spoiler: Highlight to view
just like it tried when it thought Masane was going to lose it to that U.I. Weapon, in the second or fourth or third to last episode.
On a side note, spoiler by the way

It near killed me about the death of Rikoho's birth mom. You can imagine what Masane's death did to me.

I'd suggest reading the actual comics that it is based on. Top Cow did saw that they told the anime makers not to destroy the Witchblade...amongst other things.
So as far as the light goes I'd guess it was letting out an immense amount of energy or doing something like the end of Blassreiter.

This means that the seashell that came to Rikoho in the light would most likely be the witchblade hiding in a dormant form after expelling too much energy or waiting for the right time to merge with Rikoho. Remember that it was mentioned the reason it first attached to Masane was because it wanted to be with Rikoho but sense it was in danger due to the groups that where going after it. It was also mentioned that the Witchblade will do what it takes to survive. Also remember that yes Masane heals in Witchblade form but the Witchblade also kills its host and her body was already breaking down.
This is to the writers at Funimation, Top Cow, and Gonzo. The human race as a whole do not like bad endings. Finish this now. I know the golden rule in a story " All scales must be balanced, not too much good, not too much bad or the story will shift into something it is not but never and I mean ever mess with a promise between a parent and a child. God did it to me and my dad and I turned into an emotional wreck. I DO NOT want it to happen to Rihoko. Her life will be messed up enough to begin with the Witchblade would be after her, she is the ideal host for the thing but to see the death of the only person who really cared about her die... That is low, even for you guys. Do not mess with an ending or the most sacred promise ever. You just don't. By the way I found out how to spell Rihoko.
Fumoffu, You have good points but did you read the other post you just added to my other thought, it will go after Rihoko if it already did it would have gone down her throat just like it did to Masane in the opening with or without her knowing. Also I said the Witchblade changed during the light usually it stayed red the first time she fired that laser thing would it not stay red the time on Tokyo Tower, I think Masane made it happy there for it owes her.
Also my dad who was a comic book geek, and who is dead, he had tons of comics including Witchblade, don't you think I would of read some of, not all of them. I know the basics and the anime mythology, that helped. To answer that it hid as the shell thing also makes sense but why did it not do the complete jar and shell not just the shell, you forget the Witchblade dematerializes and rematerializes clothes in this and the comics.... I think so it would have the whole necklace. My thoughts on that is the necklace came off during the light and the jar disintegrated in the light but not the shell, this could mean what I said earlier about owing Masane one final reward or as you said it could be the Witchblade making a last ditch effort. But tell me this why did it not give Masane a chance to have her memories and to tell us just how she got it. But to answer that thing about it was dormant and inactive.... IT WAS DORMANT FOR THE BEGING AND MIDDLE OF THE FIRST EPISODE DUDE. Only when it is in danger it awakens and so there is the new season right there if you are correct about the shell being the Witchblade. Rihoko would be in a huge amount of danger, there are still Neo-Genes (if that is the name of them right) out there and don't give me the oh but Maria had them all killed four words "second generation neo-genes". They could go rouge and go after the Witchblade. It still had a power signature even when it was dormant. Learn this and tell me if I am wrong.
Also, according to actual lore the Witchblade can re-animate the dead, empathically show the wielder scenes of great trauma, and allow the wielder to relive experiences from past wielders as dreams. This is also a reason to at least finish this up, Rihoko can re-animate Masane OR the Witchblade can give her Masane's memories showing us everything that happened to Masane or if she is still alive, re-animated by the Witchblade as a owed reward.
