Seeing that there are are many versions of Tenchi Muyo, even more if you count the Pretty Sammy spin offs. Which one do you like the most and the least (and why of course)?
I'll start it off with my least favorite:
Tenchi in Tokyo is generally my least favorite series in the "Tenchi-verse" as is. I still like it, but it is definitely the weakest one by far. A lot of the characters got worse in their general characterization. That said I still think its a decent series, but could have been much better.
Now to the favorite:
I'm kinda split on this one. I truly admire the original OVAs since that's where it started. But Tenchi Universe gets a ton of points for having what I consider one of the better endings for an anime that I've ever seen. It came to a good stopping point yet left things open for more without feeling painfully obvious. So for now I'll rank 'em as 1 and 1a.
I havent seen the Sasami versions yet so I cant comment on those. Also quick question are you including GXP as one of the spinoff series?
Least Favorite
GXP if you are including it. It was mainly just fanservice and the original characters where only mentioned in passing. Also the one episode that they had was just a cameo apperance type of thing. Really dissapoined at that. If not then Tenchi in Tokyo. The story line was completley altered and I think that messed up the set up of the show. It was my favorite series when I was a little kid but now I can see all the differences between the series. Also the characters where made so basic they felt like completley different ones.
Favorite
Tenchi Muyo OVAS. For me this is where it all started and I like the storylines here the most. It was entertaining, funny and also had action thrown into it without messing any of it up. Not alot of shows can pull that off as well as Tenchi did.
Theres a fine line between insanity and visionary unfortunatley you have to be a visionary to see it.

Least Favoriet would be GXP, then Tokyo. Best is the original OVA sereis that follows to Ryo Ohki!

Least Favorite: Tenchi in Tokyo
For me, my least favorite is definitely Tokyo. It just...it really doesn't hold up well to the other series at all. In a review I did for it a while back, I noted that a lot of people compared it to Dragon Ball GT in how it doesn't fit with the overall franchise, but as I say there, that's really not a fair comparison - GT feels more like a DB title and has more to enjoy for DB fans, than Tokyo does for Tenchi fans.
That said though, I do like Tokyo for what it is...more or less. I love Sakuya at any rate, she's probably my favorite Tenchi girl.
As for favorite...I haven't seen it in years, but I'd have to go with Universe. It's got all the good elements from the OVAs, then builds upon itself to become it's own creature, all while not taking any negative elements from the OVAs (though to be fair, most of the elements I don't like are from the last set of OVA eps).
I've still never yet to see any of the Sasami stuff or GXP though. ^_^;

GXP is a canon spinoff series. There's a lot of good information about the canon Tenchi-verse revealed in GXP once you get past all of the fanservice and such. As to episode 17, which was the episode that featured Tenchi and company, that was designed to be a teaser to the still unreleased OVA 3, even though the GXP story takes place after OVA 3 +1.
My least-favorite Tenchi series is Tenchi in Tokyo. The animation was terrible at times and the story wasn't the best. Plus, the character of Yugi just drove me spare. *_* I did like Tenchi's date with Ryoko though. ^_^
My favorite is the canon Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki series. I started watching it because it is considered the father of the harem genre but returned for the rather elaborate story. Its a shame that FUNimation couldn't get some package deal and license all the Kajishima novels too because I'd love to read them.

Thanks that explains a lot for me. Still not a big fan of GXP though. Plus Tenchi started as novels? I never knew that I read somewhere it started as a radio show.

The OVA is the beginning, Kajishima's novels are the continuation, and the "radio shows", manga and TV series are just spin-offs.

I don't think I've seen enough of the "Tenchi-Verse" to say what is my least favorite right now, but so far I'd say it's Tenchi in Tokyo. I hated Sakuya, and most of the villains of the week.
