Subscription Partial Encryption HTTPS

Hello,

I am concerned about the privacy and security of my personal information and credit card details. When I loaded the page to sign up for a subscription I received a pop-up in my browser (Mozilla Firefox Version 18.0.1) that said:

"You have requested an encrypted page that contains some unencrypted information. Information that you see or enter on this page could easily be read by a third party."

Upon further inspection of the page info under the security tab and the technical details heading, I was given the statement:

"Parts of the page you are viewing were not encrypted before being transmitted over the internet. Information sent over the internet without encryption can be seen by other people while it is in transit."

I thought maybe this had something to do with the loading of images so I blocked all images from loading under the permissions tab, but to no avail as this still did not prevent the same pop-up from occurring.

I would really like to sign up for a subscription, but I am concerned about this issue. I know I may sound a bit paranoid, but I have been burned in the past. If you could post back about this issue and maybe assuage some of my concerns, I would be most appreciative.

Thanks in advance,

-SundownSeinen

The only resources that seem to get transferred using HTTP are images, and they all appear to come from FUNimation's own servers. It may be the browser is only testing to see if http://* links are used on a page retrieved using the HTTPS protocol, and not whether or not those resources have been requested, as I disabled images on Chrome, and still saw a similar warning.

It's likely safe, but if you are still nervous, you may want to look into getting pre-loaded debit card, and only putting enough money on there to cover a couple months of EVS at a time.

Thank you for your reply, EyeOfPain. Your explanation sounds plausible and puts me a bit more at ease. I may consider a pre-loaded debit card or I may just decide to use my PayPal account.

A pre-loaded debit card will actually sometimes not be compatible with our systems.

There's some more information on our FAQ about the security of our payment systems, but if you have any concerns, you may wish to use PayPal for your transaction, as you suggested. smile

Ah, hope I didn't cause any problems suggesting that.

Just out of curiosity, do only Visa/Mastercard branded pre-loaded debit cards work, or is it something more odd than that, like random cards fail to verify?

Technically, officially, the card you use has to be a Visa or MasterCard credit card, not just a debit card with a logo.

In actual practice, some debit cards with the logo will go through, and some won't, not sure why. It might have to do with how certain banks recognize the card? Anyway, the policy is that it has to be a credit card, and if the debit cards don't work, we can't do anything to help, but, again, sometimes debit cards will magically work for some reason.

I've never heard of a pre-paid card working, but then, I usually don't hear anything if a payment method someone expects to work, does work! wink

We're working on an update to the payment system that will allow us to accept a lot more different payment options, but I don't know when that's going to be ready to be released, just that it's in development.

I don't know if this is applicable, but I figured I'd toss it out there just in case. In the past when I have tried to use a pre-paid debit card as a credit card (when I purchased Kara no Kyoukai from Rightstuf comes to mind) what I had to do in order to get it to work was to call the issuing company of the card (for instance visa) via the 1-800 number on the back of the card and register it with my information. It then worked fine. This way you are registering with the bank, but the card itself is not the same thing as using your personal credit card. Don't know if this would work in this particular situation or not.

So, providing your mailing address and such for verification purposes? In the case of Right Stuf, that makes sense, given what I know of their checkout process.
