EVS Player Freezing/Pausing

If you are experiencing difficulty with your EVS player pausing or freezing during an episode after the 5 second mark, you may have this issue.

Things That are Not This Issue:

1) The EVS player is an adaptive bitrate player, which (essentially) means that it adjusts itself to the speed of your internet. This means that you cannot pause it and let it buffer an entire episode, so, if you have a slow internet connection, this may naturally result in pauses in the video, as the player adapts to your speed. This is not part of this issue, it is a natural function of the player and how it works.

2) If you experience a pause at around the 4 or 5 second mark of the video and then no further pauses.

3) If you experience the pausing on other videos outside of funimation.com due to a slow or spotty connection.

Things That ARE This Issue

1) Pausing after the 5 second mark where the remaining buffer also vanishes suddenly durring the pause.

2) Pausing occurring only on some videos, or only some of the time.

3) Pausing tending to occur in the same place every time you try watch an episode. (this is not always the case, but it usually is)

If you are experiencing this issue, please test your connection speed here: http://www.speedtest.net/

Please perform this test even if you know that you have high speed internet and do not have trouble with other sites, as we need this information from as many people as possible to help with our internal testing.

Please report the results of your test and the following information to this thread, or to .

Please include:

The results of your connection speed test.
A link to (or the name and resolution of) the video you were experiencing the pausing issue on. (If it seems like all videos are having this issue, please still report every video you're seeing this issue on.
The approximate timecode of each pause.

Current Status:

This issue is still under investigation. It appears to be happening on a per-video basis, not as an issue with the player or with the computer of the user experiencing the issue.

Current Workarounds:

None at the moment. If you are experiencing this issue, please reply to this thread or to with the information requested so that we can gather information to test and resolve this issue.

Browser: Chrome, IE, Firefox. Note: IE and Firefox don't have any add-on's at all, fresh installs.
Shows and Times: I just watched all 3 seasons of Full Metal Panic! (subbed) and this happened intermittently on EVERY episode. It happened MUCH more frequently when at 720 but still happened at least 2-4 times per episode on 480. As for the times? I honestly couldn't tell you since it appeared to happen intermittently. I re-watched a few of them or would backup mid-show since the pauses sometimes causes several frames to skip and it never seemed to happen in the same place twice.

Browser: Chrome, no add ons, up-to -date.
Shows and times: I've had this problem with every video I've played since getting an EVS. I watched all of the English dub of Sekirei: Pure Engagement, as well as PSYCHO-PASS episode 6; Robotics Notes ep 4; Birdy the Mighty Decode ep 1. I can't get past the Aniplex and Funimation credits at the beginning of Sekirei episodes without a pause, and the episodes would pause every 10 to 15 seconds, usually in the same places. While my speeds aren't phenomenally fast, I only stream at 480p and this works for other streaming sites (I believe Netflix uses an adaptive bitrate stream as well). The freezing didn't occur when I streamed with a free Funimation account.

Browser: Firefox, Chrome. Occurs with or without addons. It should be noted that with ADblock plus running the video player is broken unless you "Disable Everywhere". If you disable on Funimation.com only, the video player never loads.
Shows and Times:

For Example:
http://www.funimation.com/freezing/episode/machination/dub - Froze at 3 seconds on HD Stream. I hit pause when it was frozen. After about 5 seconds the audio started playing but the video was paused. Then I started the Video back from the beginning(dragging the cursor and hitting play) and I has two audio streams going on. I have to reload the page to fix this.

Upon further testing it seems to happen most often after switch from SD to HD during mid stream. Often times this causes two audio steams to be playing, one from the SD and one from the HD.

Browser: Chrome (23.0.1271.64 m)
Videos: Any I've watched.

I started the free trial fully intending to continue it, but this problem has convinced me not to. No other video service I use (Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, the anime network) has problems streaming me HD quality video, and you can't even manage SD. I love the selection of videos available, please figure the problem so I can subscribe again!

Shows and Times: I've watched all of Darker Than Black (and season 2/OVAs) and a few Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood episodes. Every episode it would intermittently pause...more so on the HD streams. It happened a lot, but seemed pretty random and hard to get actual times on it.

Re: EVS Player Freezing/Pausing

I'm not even going to bother with the speedtest since I know it's not my 50 Mb/s internet that's the problem.
Browser: Latest ver Chrome.
Every video that I watch pauses for five seconds and then plays for about thirty seconds and so on, an endless loop of annoyance. One does not need to be a computer scientist to figure out that Funimation needs to update and/or get more servers. If it isn't the servers that are defunct then they need to calibrate the awful EVS player.

If the conditions don't improve, I will not renew my subscription when the free trial ends.

This makes me wonder where all the Elite Subscription money is going to... The only thing I know for certain is that the money is not being spent to provide a pleasant experience for anyone on this site. To my knowledge, this has always been a recurring problem in the funimation community that has never been addressed. This issue seems to have fallen on deaf ears. This is exactly why I am reiterating it intensely (bitching). Don't get me wrong I don't hate funimation. I actually like all the great titles the company has acquired, but the technical aspect of watching those awesome titles just honestly suck and can turn any great anime into one giant pain in the ass.

Good thing I can fall back onto my premium membership of Crunchyroll or maybe even torrent some anime until funimation puts on its big boy pants and start tackling the dire problems.

Best of Luck,
(Really sorry about the language, but it just didn't have the conveying power without it)
P.S. For those that don't encounter freezing/pausing when watching anime, You are a lucky bastard and I hate you.

Re: EVS Player Freezing/Pausing

A reminder to anyone submitting their information to this thread:

Even if the issue appears to be happening on every episode that you watch, could you please report at least one specific episode, as we need that information for internal testing.

Be sure to include whether you're watching the subbed or the dubbed version of that episode, as well, if applicable.

Re: EVS Player Freezing/Pausing

This happens to me multiple times each episode on every show I've watched. e.g. first few episodes of steins gate and legend of legendary heroes.

This is with the subscription player, Ubuntu and Firefox 11.

DL speed tested at 3.06 Mbps.

Hope you find an answer, without one I will probably cancel my subscription next month as this is pretty annoying.
