I loved this movie. I have only watched it one time so far with that one time being subtitled and in Japanese along with the extras after finishing it, but I hope to watch it in English soon. I also have The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Limited Edition and enjoyed that movie as well, but I just like Summer Wars a bit more.
It was a decent movie and I thought the dub was pretty good. But it was pretty the Digimon movie with the SoL/family aspect added to it (which was done pretty well).
It really was pretty much the Digimon movie mixed with SoL like you said, but at the same time, for me...it was so much more somehow. It was just...wow.
Honestly, I really thought I was gonna just 'like' this movie. It looked awesome, but I figured it was overhyped as hell, since EVERYONE was talking about it. I went in with the mindset of 'Okay, this is gonna be an awesome ride.' By the middle of it though, I was already gripping my laptop screen as it kept plugging along.
This is one of the best films I've ever seen, animation or otherwise. The characters, even the ones you barely see and have no chance of remembering their names, get just enough little character moments to make you remember who they are. Everything about this film just screams excellence, and even though it's more on the Japanese side of things and I watched the dub, I'm going to watch the interviews on the second disc soon.
I'm definitely a fan of Mamoru Hosoda after this too, and plan to make The Girl Who Leapt Through Time a higher ranking to-watch title on my list.
Anyway, everyone here HAS to see this film. It just earned a place on my 'Must See' list, and that is a very short listing (Heck, the only other things on it that I can recall are Air, Fullmetal Alchemist, and School Rumble). It's going to catch your hearts guys, I promise.

Mamoru Hosoda is easily one of my favorite Japanese directors. I'm really happy to see him working on more original theatrical releases after TGWLTT.
Having seen TGWLTT first, I think that would have to be ranked slightly higher. However, I can't honestly say I've ever met someone who's watched Summer Wars and disliked it, and would look forward to anything Hosoda decides to direct, or just work on, in the future.

I had the same expectation and feel the same way about the movie you did. I watched dub only because I watched it with my wife so I will likely go back and watch it subbed soon. I have to say that this is more than just the best anime I have seen in a long time, it is the best film I have seen in the past few years.
On a side note it made me realize I might should talk to my family more.
Honestly, I really thought I was gonna just 'like' this movie.
This was how I felt, too. I put it off for a pretty good while because I didn't think it would amaze me, but then Netflix sent it out and... Well, I was completely blown away by it. I loved it to pieces and plan on adding it to my collection as soon as I can.
I've actually just gotten done watching this movie for the third time. The second time, I watched it with my girlfriend, and it was still awesome but had somehow lost a tiny bit of luster. This third time, about 30 minutes ago, was with my mom. It was utterly amazing again. Maybe it comes and goes, but this film will continue to be a 'must see' title that I recommend to people.
For those who are interested, I should be getting Summer Wars today from Netflix. I'll be watching it with my family tonight (since, as a whole, they enjoyed The Girl Who Leapt Through Time).
Since it's a remake of Our War Games, and it has Mamoru Hosoda behind it, I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it. How much, though, remains to be seen.

Actually, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is based on a novel written in 1967.

Given a lot that happens in the film, Summer Wars is a GREAT film to watch with them.
I showed it to my mom as said, and she loved it.
