Spice and Wolf II: The Ending

In lieu of getting whalloped by Irene in the next day or so, I finished watching the english dub of Season II yesterday and I was wondering, what are everyone's thoughts on the season?

What did you like? What didn't you like? And how does it compare to Season I?

Overall, I thought the second season was well done, although it was more emotionally intense at times than season one. Season two revolved more around Lawrence and Holo's relationship I thought and it was definitely felt in the pacing of the story arc.

Lawrence and Holo's relationship was in two different places for the first half of the series, and if you read the book equivalent, there are times when Lawrence fully expects Holo to leave (wolf and the inadvertent rift)

I especially enjoyed how the Amarti storyline allowed Lawrence to realize how precious Holo was in his life.

In terms of the ending, I didn't mind so much how it ended quickly because I'm a fan of the books and ultimately know what happens. I wish they had paced it a bit better though.

Here's to a season three! If not, here's to Volume 5 this Christmas! cool

I agree with everything, no arguments here, even when it comes to the novel, though I still have yet to order Vol. 4 and I've already finished 1-3. Not sure why I'm hesitating, but I'll get it eventually. Currently learning Japanese and I should at some point still be able to read the Japanese versions before Yen Press ever gets done publishing them. 17 Novels, releasing only 2 a year, sorry, but I don't have that kind of time or patience, and neither does anyone else, 8.5 years is a long time to expect people to keep it on their mind.

Re: Spice and Wolf II: The Ending

Just finished watching my Season 2 DVD/Blu-Ray set and I got to say, even though I enjoyed this Season and thought that it was better than the first, the ending kind of felt a bit disappointing but I understand since there is still so much that needs to be done so I probably will appreciate the ending a lot more when Season 3 comes out so I hope that Season 3 comes out soon so I could finally see an actual ending since their is an ending now from the light novels. Also, hope that it will not take Funimation 2 years to release an English dub anymore and hope that I just have to wait 1 year for an English dub.

OMG could you please elaborate? huh?
WHAT do you MEAN by "what happens"? Because I found the end EXTREMELY disappointing, as in completely open for season 3. But Season 3 comes from money (just like every other season in anything) rather than story plot completion...

OK, the MOST BEAUTIFUL thing about this series is the fact that Holo is immortal. Lawrence in accepting his love for her is being selfish to the point that they are even. Long after he is dead she would be suffering from not having him beside her.

I thought "Deus Ex Machina" moment would show up (which would have been perfect in my opinion) in which Lawrence becomes the bear (which constantly appears through the series.

Well, want to keep it short so you guys read it. What do you think? xD

@ Undefined: I fixed your quote. The quote system on this forum is a little. . . twitchy. hmm It seems to have issues with line spaces.

Also, if the ending I've heard about is indeed how the books end, it's pretty darn happy. You're idea of how to end it is interesting but I think the way the author apparently went works for me.

Thanks for fixing the quote Richard! I realized it was poorly done, but gave up on fixing it as I am having some issues with loading times... tear
And where did you hear about the light novels?? shocked
Although I wish I could see the rest of this story with pictures (everyone likes pictures right? doh! ), I wouldn't mind (yes I would but oh well) reading to see how the author ends this tale...
Could you give me some more info on the light novels? Avoiding spoilers if possible tongue
But well, another "super-go-lucky-happy-ending-only-7.99" option I see is Holo becoming a mortal, which definitely cool, but not as awesome as the bearification idea (please don't look up the word bearification). I felt that the lack of supernatural stuff in the end could justify the bearification process but apparently I was wrong? dumb

Anyways, I am very glad to hear there is more to this affair... crying

Re: Spice and Wolf II: The Ending

A lot of series I've read/seen feature the idea of a long-lived non-human being paired with a normal person. It's a really popular archetype in Japan. Aside from Visions of Escaflowne (a good series that I think started the phrase about series getting "Gainax'd"), most of them have the couple settling for one person living their shorter life but leaving behind "happy memories" and/or "pride in what they had" for their longer-lived partner.

The idea of Lawrence being the Moon-eating Bear is, as you said, far-fetched. Still, I have the feeling that there's at least fan-fiction with exactly that premise. Whether or not it's any good, well, I think we all know the answer to that. woot

Hum, I have heard "Visions of Escaflowne" before, but have no idea what it is about! And what does a series getting Gainax'd means? woot

I understand that

Is an option. But the thing is that we get into a debate of what is true love...

Spoiler: Highlight to view
Holo did said that she might grow tired of Lawrence, justifying that they could be a couple up until when he died and that's it. But as in the last episode, the garden that was growing even during the winter required constant effort and attention, which would be the same for their relationship.
That is, if their goal is simple (love), they can pursue it forever and never be sad.
So it breaks down to Lawrence being good natured. Could he accept her love knowing that when he is gone she will suffer? crying
Anyone seeing any relation to a recent successful love story between a vampire and a human? Anyone? dumb
In this case is different though. since the human becoming immortal option is impossible (as far as we know?).

Re: Spice and Wolf II: The Ending

Gainax has developed a reputation in some circles that they will make a perfectly good and in fact outstanding series that suddenly falls to pieces in the last few episodes, last episode, or even last few minutes. The endings are usually meant to be artistic or have some sort of philosophic meaning, but the fans generally hate them and will sometimes abandon a series entirely because of the disappointing ending. A few popular series that have "been Gainax'd" include Evangelion and Gurren-Lagann (to some people).

I do have to correct myself, though, because Visions of Escaflowne was developed by Sunrise nervous

And the struggle for the human is exactly what you said. They're afraid of being selfish and don't want to hurt the other person, but at the same time, they can't deny that they do have feelings for them that they want returned. I've only read/seen what's out in English, so story-wise I'm pretty much in the dark. Of course, that just makes me all the more interested in seeing how it turns out.

We may never know... that is the most frustrating part. Who guarantees that we will be around 1 year from now, when English versions actually reach any other non-Japanese speaking country? crying

Wow, existential-nihilism enters the conversation? This message board keeps you on your toes. But have faith. If we are around in a year, then we shall have the promised Spice and Wolf. If we're not, then we're in heaven, and we have all the Spice and Wolf, promised and otherwise. After all, the Spice (and Wolf) must flow.
