Was it ever the creator's intention to add Sylphiel to the main cast? It seemed like at the end of Next she'd be in for the long haul and then I saw Try and they added Filia(which I thought at first was just a poor substitution, but she was actually a very nice, original character herself) and she never did appear again until late into Evolution-R. So, was Sylphiel meant to have a larger role or did something happen between Next and Try to change this?

Original plans for Sylphiel?
I haven't seen all of Next, but from what I understand, only the first two shows were based on the original light novels...which might explain Sylphiel's absence.

Sylphiel was only important in volumes 3 & 4 of the novels. I think she shows up in volume 8 but I haven't read it yet (bad me). Anyway, Slayers and Slayers Next are loosely based on the light novels whereas Slayers Try is completely unique. I think that the introduction of Filia in Try meant there was no room for yet another miko-cleric character. You notice Filia isn't in Revolution or Evolution-R and so Sylphiel returns. ^_^

Which was unfortunate. If there is another season, I'd like to see the entire "main" cast together. Not sure what would bring them all together but it'd be nice.
Filia being entirely an anime-only character makes it seem kinda unlikely that she'd return. Hardcore fans of Slayers want the remaining "main line" novels to be animated, although they'd have to be tweaked to keep Amelia and Zelgadiss in since my understanding is that neither character is in those novels (they may have a cameo or something).
Of course, I'm thinking that the chances of getting a new Slayers anime is kinda small. I don't think Slayers Revolution did as well in Japan as they thought it would, though it got off to a strong start.

I'm glad Sylphiel left. She got kinda annoying after a while. I liked Filia better. I do hope there's another movie or OVA in the future that brings back Filia (or at least give her a cameo). But I doubt they'd be able to get Tara Jayne back to do her voice in any future media she may appear in.
Filia was too much of a clutz IMHO, but then again, so was Sylphiel... the way she douted on Gourry was also a little sad which made me wonder where her brain was. I mean it must not have been on his brain(does Gourry even have one?) but he DID seem to have his heart in the right place.
Filia would've been better if she actually used her head once in a while. In a way she reminded me more of a dragon form of Gourry at times. Or worse than that, Amelia. (Yes, she got THAT bad, especially around Xellos.) She was good natured, but man did she ever have a short-fuse. I would've liked to have seen her in the last two seasons... As short as they were, she could've at least helped out a little.
It's actually sad to see Slayers end. Maybe they can do another slew of OAV's or movies with the TV cast this time. That might work considering they have 5 for the previous years, now they can do some with the newer ones too. (And no, I'm not even thinking about Premium)
