I actually got into it when the Funimation Channel was on Dish network back in 2007 for that short time. My ag teacher (the coolest teacher i've ever had) told me about it being on Dish (it was on like channel 5924, one reason I and i'm sure many others didn't know about it). Take this which ever way you want but about a month before that my mom and I had called Dish asking for the channel, coincidence? I was loving being able to watch shows like Yu Yu Hakusho and Dragon Ball again and naturally I tried all of the others shows (I really hadn't heard of many of them (I wasn't real big on anime in general at the time)), but the only show that really left a great impression on me was the Slayers. I was loving it for the same reason anyone else would: terrific characters, awesome action, hilarious moments etc.. It was really weird how the scheduling worked though because it had gotten to about episode 24 and then the next day it started over. I wondered why that was but I wasn't going to complain considering I hadn't started the series from the beginning. So it got to episode 24 again and the next day it started over again and again and again (I wasn't to happy at this point). But eventually it did finally show the last episodes, not long after that to my disappointment the Funi channel was gone. Not long after that however I did find the complete first season in a Sam Goody or Suncoast or whatever and it was great. Being more internet savy at this point I found out about Next and got it when it came out (loving it even more) and eventually did the same with Try. And of course I was very ecstatic when I found out about Revolution and Evolution-R.
So that's how I got into one of my favorite shows of all time, how did you.
Hope there's more Slayers in the future.

I watched the first American broadcast of the series when it premiered (subbed) on the International Channel, 10 years ago.
Saw it on the linear FUNimation Channel in 2007, along with may other anime series and movies.
You actually saw it on FUNimation Channel's block on Color TV.
Def. one of the non-mainstream anime series that got me started on anime that wasn't on tv (DBZ, Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing etc.) back in my high school days (ahh, to be young again...)
(In grandpa-like voice) Back then, found them on vhs tapes with only 2-4 eps per tape, selling well over $20 each (I'm old).

I gained an interest in Slayers when I read MagicBox's account of how he found the first series, but it was the knowledge of the English dub cast that got me interested. The NY cast doing a non-4Kids dub? That was reason enough to check out for me.
The dub wasn't nearly as good as I thought it would be (though I think it's better to say that it hasn't aged well then that it's bad), but Slayers' quirky and humorous tone on the fantasy anime genre won me over. I'm not quite as into it as I used to be, since it's kind of all over the place in terms of quality (when it's good, it's excellent, but when it's bad, it's almost physically painful), but I still look fondly on it.
