About Funimation releasing Shakugan no Shana

I was so happy to hear that Funimation licensed the second season of Shakugan no Shana (Shakugan no Shana Second), Shakugan no Shana the movie and the Shakugan no Shana OAV's so I was wondering when they are going to release them and is Funimation going to use the English Voice Cast from the first season of Shakugan no Shana which was done by Geneon Entertainment. I cant wait until they release them because Shakugan no Shana is one of my favorite anime series. kitty

There's currently no news on when FUNimation will be releasing their Shana stuff, but it'll most likely be late this year. ^^

As for getting back the dub cast, I certainly hope they do. They'll have to contact Ocean Studios in Canada and have them get back the cast and produce the dub.

FUNimation has shown that they care about cast consistency in the past with Slayers, so hopefully they will do the same with this series. smile

Honestly it would be a pretty big mess up for Funi not to get the original cast back. Pretty much everyone who has shown interest in teh show loved the original Dub cast and for good reason. It was one hell of a good dub.

Really for Both Shana and Black Lagoon if they don't get back the original cast(Namely Tabitha St Germain) Then I will more then likely not be buying. For me she made those shows(Less is Black Lagoon but considering the new OAV is centered around her character she needs to be the one to do it).

Inconsistent dubbing is one of my pet peeves. For example the Xenosaga anime not having the cast of the game(which sure the 2nd game changed the cast but the 1st and 3rd were the same) or Comic Party season 2 having a different cast then the first one.

I just heard on animenewsnetwork.com that the final season of Shakugan no Shana which is named Shakugan no Shana 3 is airing in Japan this coming Fall so I'm really hoping that Funimation will get the broadcasting rights to stream the episodes on their website and I am also hoping that they will release Shakugan no Shana 2 , the movie and the OAV soon because I believe that it has been over a year since they said that they licensed those properties of the francise. kitty

Really? People LIKED the original dub? I found it to be mediocre at best. I've never really liked any of Ocean's dubs. I don't think they have anywhere near the same level of talent as FUNimation's own VAs. Plus Ocean slaughtered the writing on Wilhelmina (not to mention slaughtering her name and calling her "Wirhelmina"...)

I would DESPERATELY like to see the thing re-done and re-cast with FUNi's talent and not use Ocean's people. Tabitha St. Germain just did not do Shana justice. I think someone like Carrie Savage would be much better to dub over Rie Kugamiya. Both have a unique quality to their voices, so I think it would be a good match. Plus Savage is really talented to begin with and I don't think she'd have any trouble handling this role.

I will admit though that Ocean's choice for Yuji was pretty darn good... but at the same time, anyone could probably do that and be decent. I'm more concerned with Shana, Wilhelmina, Margery, and Hecate's voices personally.

This much I can agree with. Xenosaga randomly changing voices greatly irritated me and the same with Symphonia 2. Though I understand why the Xenosaga anime itself differed in casting. It was picked up by ADV who I believe had their own people and probably couldn't afford to go out and get the same voices that Namco originally used. I'm more bothered by the games themselves changing the voices than this.

Re: About Funimation releasing Shakugan no Shana

Sorry Crazy Li,I gotta disagree, Tabitha St. Germain is THE Shana voice for me, and I absolutely loved the rest of the cast too, it's one of my favorite Ocean Studios dubs of all time. Germain brought a lot more character to Shana than Kugamiya did, IMO.

But hey, to each their own, I can understand where you're coming from as well. The dub tried doing its own thing in some ways for the casting, rather than try to replicate the Japanese voices, and I understand how that can feel odd for people who watched in Japanese first.
But that doesn't make it bad, and the original dub has a ton of fans who loved the direction its performances took, so I personally think it'd be a bad choice to recast.

However, if FUNi actually were to recast with their own talent, I'd hope they'd try going for a replica of the Ocean Dub more so than the Japanese track... to at least make the dubs of the two seasons feel remotely similar.

That's a bad idea since past dubs have shown us that it never works out well.

Currently know one knows. They haven't given any release date whatsoever. It might have to do with how the first series DVD's are out of print now for some reason (This affects other Geneon properties they have distributed.).

Re: About Funimation releasing Shakugan no Shana

I'm kind of glad that FUNimation has licensed the second season, the movie, and the OVAs of Shakugan no Shana. I hope they release it later this year and also re-release the first season fully licensed by FUNimation, just like Samurai Champloo and Gungrave. Also to mention is that FUNimation should get the same cast just as the first season.
