The School Rumble Guide

WARNING!: The following thread is likely to contain many spoilers about the ‘School Rumble’ franchise. While such spoilers will be attempted to be kept at a minimum, please keep in mind that you read further into this thread at your own discretion, and that it is assumed that anyone reading it will have seen the show already.

If you have not however, please view this trailer to see if you think you would be interested.

About School Rumble
Basic Premise: Tenma Tsukamoto is an ordinary second year high school student who has fallen in love with one of her classmates, Oji Karasuma. However, currently she is unable to confess her feelings to him. To make things worse, she found out that Karasuma is transferring to another school in a year. On the other hand, Tenma's other classmate, Kenji Harima (who is a delinquent) is also in love with Tenma. Not being able to confess his feelings, Harima gets depressed day by day. (via ANN)

A Little Deeper: School Rumble is a romantic comedy revolving around the daily lives of the students of Class 2-C at the fictional Yagami High School, as well as their friends and families. The main female protagonist is Tenma Tsukamoto, an unremarkable second-year high school student who secretly admires her eccentric, enigmatic, nice-guy classmate, Oji Karasuma. Tenma struggles to confess her feelings to Karasuma. He remains oblivious to her interest, instead seeking fulfillment by indulging in curry. The main male protagonist, delinquent Kenji Harima, similarly yearns for Tenma, attending school solely to be near her. Like Tenma, Harima has difficulty declaring his love, and whenever he summons the courage to do so, circumstances conspire against him.

Harima complicates the love triangle through constant bumbling, and misunderstandings among the students aggravate the situation. Harima becomes involved with Tenma's close friend, Eri Sawachika, after the pair are thrown together in mutually embarrassing situations. Later in the series, he develops a friendship with Tenma's younger sister, Yakumo Tsukamoto, who becomes Harima's assistant on a manga he writes. Yakumo's relationship with Harima causes problems with Class 2-C's student representative, Haruki Hanai, who has a crush on Yakumo, with the sisters' shared surname causing Harima and Hanai to misinterpret the object of each others' respective infatuations. Although Harima manages to engineer romantic encounters with Tenma, her relationship with Karasuma nevertheless progresses, and Harima's bonds with Eri and Yakumo grow stronger.

Although School Rumble focuses on Harima and Tenma, the series explores a number of supporting characters. These include Tenma's friends Mikoto Suou, who runs a kenpō dojo where her childhood friend, Hanai, trains, and Akira Takano, a mysterious and uncannily perceptive girl. As the story progresses, more major characters are introduced into the relationship web. (via Wikipedia)

The Anime

Since the anime adaptation of the series is what FUNimation has and not the manga, let’s examine it a little more first, even though the manga came first.

The anime adaptation of School Rumble is divided into four main parts – School Rumble, the first 26 episode installment; School Rumble: Extra Class, a two-episode OVA that goes along with the first ‘season’ and also serves as an in-between before the next one; School Rumble: Second Semester, a second 26 episode installment picking up almost exactly where the first left off; and finally, School Rumble: Third Semester, another two-episode OVA that takes place at the end of the series.

Of these anime adaptations, all except for the ‘Third Semester’ OVA have been licensed, dubbed, and released on DVD by FUNimation in a bilingual format many times. The final OVA is sadly however, unlikely to be licensed (more about that second OVA later).

Episode Guides
School Rumble’s episodes aren’t like normal anime episodes, in that they aren’t one coherent story throughout the duration of the running time (though they usually do connect in some way or another). Instead, each episode is usually composed of a series of three mini-episodes, so that each one has it’s own individual name.

items. It’ll make sense when you see the episode, mostly.

25. It's So Romantic, Harima! / Get Published in Zinegame, Harima! / Come on <3, Harima!
26. . (Period)

Note: In the third portion of episode 25’s title, the heart there is an actual heart in the episode title rather than the ‘<‘ and ‘3’ combination used here to get the point across. Likewise, the title of episode 26 isn’t ‘. (Period)’, but is just the ‘ . ‘ itself. The ‘(Period)’ has only been added here to get across the episode’s title better.

School Rumble: Third Semester

1. Registration! My Feelings! / Smashed Up! My Feelings! / Fleeting Love!
2. The Final Episode

Note: The episode titles here are taken from Wiki, as again, this OVA has not been released in the United States, so no ‘official’ English episode titles exist. Likewise, the divisions for the parts of episode 1 are mere guesses on my own part, based on the previous releases, as well as how it looks. Episode 2’s title could also be somewhat wrong, as I am unsure if ‘Saishūkai’ translates that evenly into ‘The Final Episode’.

What is ‘Third Semester’?
Since this part of the anime has not been released, some of you may not know what it is, even if you have hear of it. I also cannot vouch for the 100% validity of what you’re about to read until I look into it further, so if you know for a fact something here is incorrect or just hearsay, please let me know via PM.

After the second season of School Rumble was done in Japan, a third series was planned out for another 24-26 episodes to follow through the end of the manga’s story. For some reason or another however (speculation seems to suggest a mix of falling ratings and budget), the season, despite being greenlit, never came to fruition.

As a consolation however, the final two episodes of the planned series actually were finished, and released as bonus material DVDs with special edition volumes 21 and 22 of the manga in Japan. This is why despite being another short OVA like ‘Extra Class’, it’s referred to as ‘Third Semester’ as they were originally not meant to be an OVA at all. As such, it is also more accurate to refer to them as episodes 25 and 26 of ‘Third Semester’, even if that seems a bit weird with no episodes 1-24 before them.

Quite a bit of witty quips and a few unfortunate "snips," too. (Who knew that leather and pink bows worked so well together?)

Class 2-C is getting pretty feisty... everything from wrestling and back alleyway brawls to friendly sporting events gone death match. There's even some girl on girl action, if you know what I mean. That hot new school nurse is gonna have her hands full if this keeps up!

In fact, the only thing really lacking in these four episodes is curry! You heard it: no curry!

It’s a dog eat dog world as Yoshidayama takes on Harima, and lil’ sis Yakumo discovers she’s not the only one who’s barking mad! Poor Imadori just might have met his match…looks like he’s about to find out that Lara’s bark is no where near as bad as her “bite!”

There’s even a history lesson as Class 2-C goes Neanderthal…too bad for Karasuma that curry hasn’t been invented yet!

Note: These volumes being released as an omnibus was solely done on the American side, they were originally individual volumes in Japan. The plan it seems, originally, was to finish the printing of the series in this omnibus format, so there was to be two more omnibuses - one for volumes 17-19, and one more for volumes 20-22. No word was ever given either way on School Rumble Z.

So, for this next portion of the guide, is a little bit of info on the volumes we never got to get.
