FUNimation to Release Risque Romantic Comedy B Gata H Kei

Flower Mound, TX (July 1, 2011) – FUNimation Entertainment announced today that it has acquired the U.S. rights to distribute the anime series “B Gata H Kei – Yamada’s First Time.” These rights include home entertainment, broadcast, digital and merchandise.

This risque romantic comedy, from director Yusuke Yamamoto ("Sgt Frog”, “Welcome to the NHK”), is based on the manga series of the same name published by Shueisha. Both follow Yamada, a boy-crazy school girl with distracting daydreams about future bedmates – but before she can get this saucy sex life underway, she realizes she first needs to lose her virginity! She knows to whom she will bestow this prize: her classmate Kosuda. However, a successful seduction of Kosuda is more difficult than this lusty teen had counted on.

FUNimation will release the 12-episode series on DVD and Blu-ray in 2012.

Oh sweet. I love B Gata H Kei.. I wanted it when it firt came out. This is seriously a funny show and even though i'm very angry at FUNimation right now(Higurashi D=) I'm still going to be buying this for 1) to support it and 2) because i think it's a awesome show. I really think it should get a second season tho since the first season covered half the manga in 12 episodes and didn't change the storyline so one more 12 episode season could finish the show up ^_^

I've been following the manga and finding the collision of Yamada's libido, vanity, ego, and insecurities way more hilarious than it has any right to be. Reading people's thoughts about Yamada also can be an interesting study in societal responses to gender -- a man's a player, a woman's a slut, that sort of thing. (Plus I've wondered how much of Yamada's aforementioned vanity and insecurities come from socially prescribed gender roles.)

One thing I've found interesting to ponder: One of the very first things we learn about Yamada, in the first 4koma, is that she thinks her genitalia look weird. (Most likely, she just doesn't know what a normal teenage girl's equipment looks like.) It's only on the next page that we learn of her Quest to Get Laid. That tells you something: that her total lack of a clue about sex is at least as important as her obsession with it.

Unexpected license but one I look forward too. The concept alone has had me interested for a while. I've wanted to see how they heck this was handled and I'm glad I'll be able to see it through Funi's fine release.

@ Soundmonkey44: A lot of that so-called "quality fair" fails when it comes to putting cash where fan's posting mouths are. Shows like this sell because the fans of ecchi and comedy buy anime. Drama, sports shows and even mecha series that aren't EVA don't sell very well.

My point: If you want to see more of the shows you consider to be great licensed, you've got to convince more fans to buy the shows like them that are already licensed!

Don't focus on the disappointment at licenses you don't like, promote the ones you do like!

Wow. I love this show, but was this seriously licensed before The Tatami Galaxy? Excuse me while I go through the archives to make sure I didn't miss anything...

huh...I would have expected Media blasters to get this... not to sound rude, i'm greatful for what u peeps at funi do, but all the cheap ecchi title acquistions like this are kind of annoying... i mean you could be putting that money towards.......... more..... quality fair. (or more saves.)
