Anime Pacing

Okay, lately I have been seeing a lot of people disliking the newer episodes of One Piece lately and switching to the manga. Apparently it's because of the bad pacing toei animation is doing right now. Now, I want to discuss this, because I have a lot of thoughts about this subject.

First of all, I agree that Toei's pacing compared to the manga is not good. Doing one episode per one chapter makes the anime feels like it's not going anywhere. Usually in an anime, 1.5 or 2 manga chapters can fill an entire episode, but doing 1 makes the anime feels like it's going slow.

Now this could be a good or bad thing depending on the person watching/reading the series. For the people who are only anime watchers, which I would think is few, they might not mind the slow pacing, while the people who read the manga may hate it with a passion.

The reason this has been brought to my attention is that I'm worried about the future, when Funimation requires these slow paced episodes. Are people going to stop buying and supporting the DVD's when they get to Mainford? I really wouldn't want that to happen, because I really like Funimation's dub and sub. If these slow pacing episodes are really effecting the fan propaganda of the anime, then I would rather Toei make some good fillers then this slow pacing.

Now, I don't know what the people in Japan think, but I would say that they don't like the slow pacing either, considering the ratings I have been seeing for the recent episodes. With this being said, Toei Animation is coming to Anime Expo this year. If anyone is going to this expo, then I would like for them to maybe talk to the representative about these recent episodes, and ask them what the Japanese think about these recent slow pacing episodes. Ask them if they can start doing filler again like they used to. Speaking of which, I can understand why they didn't use filler when they entered the New World, nobody wants to see filler when One Piece has reached it's halfway points, but really, they are behind 40 chapters in the manga. I think it's high time for some filler,my opinion.

But anyway, if anyone is going to Anime Expo, talk to Toei about this please. I don't want people to be turned off by the newest One Piece episodes of the slow pacing when Funimation get's to it.

I think you should be worrying more about FUNimation even getting to that point. That's hundreds of episodes away so it's a silly thing to worry about. The thing that matters is people buying now.

True, I guess your right. There are people still complaining that Funimation is not releasing One Piece on voyages and not collections, and saying they are going to wait and buy the collections. Hopefully that's only the minority of One Piece fans.

Unfortunately, when Japanese companies try to adapt super long, ongoing manga, pacing and filler problems are practically unavoidable. So Toei tends to pad out material to keep filler arcs to a minimum. In my opinion, it's preferable to what Pierrot's slipped into with Naruto and Bleach (interrupting the story with long bouts of filler), but it's definitely not a perfect arrangement.

It's better than doing a completely different filler like Bleach does... Toei are trying to keep to keep the arc going without it harming the anime itself. I haven't noticed any slack in ratings at all... It's still in the top 5 rating along with the special edition.
I still enjoy the recent episodes. I ignore the pacing, doesn't bother me much but I can notice it.
I'm sure toei won't make the mistakes that Bleach and Naruto made.

Hope so. I for one didn't like how Perriot did Naruto fillers. I guess it's just a matter of opinion about the pacing. I'll check the ratings out.

Re: Anime Pacing

So far, though my recommended option for starting this franchise is the manga for a series of reasons, the anime has managed to pace itself very well.

Just glance at the One Piece Wikia's Epsiode Guide: http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Episode_Guide
Each of the filler episodes are highlighted, some like the first filler have either canon elements and decided to expand it into a mini-arc or were parts of the story that Oda himself wanted in the manga and references but didn't have the time to place into the story.

Is it slow? Yes.
However, we will never have long spans of filler like Naruto or Bleach had.

Well, I guess the people in the AP forums are just a minority of the One Piece fans? Are their people who don't like the pacing of the anime here?

Re: Anime Pacing

I can understand why people want it to go faster. I have been waiting for the episodes that are coming up for months. My favorite moments of Fishman island are coming up in the next few episodes.

Though people complaining that things are going to slow does tend to make me laugh a little. They are going at a rate of 1 manga to 1 episodes. So they are getting it at exactly the same rate people reading the manga got it.

The problem with that comparison is that anime is NOT manga. It takes some real skill to put 20 something pages of a comic book and make it an entertaining 20-ish minute episode, which is why it's preferable to adapt multiple chapters. Dragon Ball Z had a 1:1 chapter-episode ratio for a while, and everyone knows how well that turned out. tongue
