The BIGGEST Problem with [Name a Genre/Artist here] Haters.

If you look on my profile here it says that I dislike: People with invalid reasons to hating bands/artist. Why? Because almost ALL reasons I've heard about hating a particular band, artist or music genre are invalid.

Example I've been in:

Me: Hey! do you like [artist]?
other guy: NO!!!
Me: Ok. Why?
other guy: [artist] just sucks.
Me: Ok. Well, can you explain why [artist] "sucks".
other guy: Well, Since [band/artist] is a [genre] artist, then [he/she/they] aren't that good.
Me: What's wrong with [genre] music? [genre] speaks the same theories as [another genre] music.
other guy: No, that not true at all.
Me: Why?
other guy: They are completely different styles of music.
Me: Styles, yes, but what about the rules of music theory?
other guy: uhhhh..... What?
Me: Music Theory. How are the musical theories between [artist] and [another artist] completely different?
other guy: They just are.
Me: How?
other guy: THEY JUST ARE AND THAT'S THAT!
Me: HOW are they different?
(after awhile)
other guy: YOU SUCK!

It's at that point that I win the argument.

Why can't we just say "I'm just not into [band/artist/genre]" rather then just bash the heck out [band/artist/genre]? If I went to a concert, and the artist bashes another artist, regardless if I like or dislike [artist], I won't attend another concert of the criticizing artist.

Just enjoy the music you like without having to bash at someone is all I can say.

I used to be a basher, but then I realized I was being an arsehead and I got used to saying "I'm not into that kind of stuff". I was constantly surrounded with people who liked rap and my taste in music was completely invalid. I grew up listening to late 50s-early 90s music so you can imagine everyone around me was clueless and I was shocked to hear that rap didn't tell any more stories. I really dislike these types of people who bash artists and genres, I don't bash, but I do make a lot of jokes about the Rap and Screamo genres.

Well, it definitely seems like people are more proud of what they hate than what they like. It's very sad.

Extreme bashing like that is a sure sign of ignorance on the part of the person saying it. It's also a sure sign that they just want attention, probably thinking that they're 'cool' for hating that band.

That may sound silly, but if you think about it, it makes sense.

I would rather be honest and say that I "greatly dislike" such-and-such style music, since whether or not I find it entertaining is up to me anyway. As an example, I do not like the artist band Cannibal Corpse, nor do I like or care for that style of music.

I find the hyper-accelerated drumming to be a slap in the face to a more refined sense of percussion, and the guttural (undecipherable) singing to be so obnoxious that I want to hurt myself in my hasty attempt to get away from that style.

Now, I could say that it sucks, and I have no use for that style of music, but I'm not hating it, or the band, I know for a fact that it takes talent to play an instrument, and to sing gutturally, but as a musician for over two decades, I feel a little bit qualified to make a judgement call on what I think sounds good to me without being labeled as a hater.

And before anyone gets the wrong idea, I listen to more different genres of music than most record companies have artists, so I'm not one of those shut in types that only listens to a select few artists, and claims to cull some sort of massive working knowledge of music past and present from a smattering of impressions.

I am a singer and have performed with lots of different types of bands. While my voice lends itself more towards Rock, Folk and Jazz I have also performed some country (not my favorite by a long shot). But I think particularly as a musician it's important to have an appreciation for all genres of music and keep an open mind. There are particular artist, some of them very popular that may grate on my ears like fingernails on a chalk board but I can usually find some aspect of it to appreciate.
I've never understood haters in music. I've always had very eclectic taste and listen to artist in every genre spanning through decades. I actually had someone tease me for listening to some 80's hair band, I can't remember which one but this person was also stuck in a single genre and was missing out on so many wonderful bands/artist.
I think people should open their minds, it is after all a sign of intelligent life.
Also appreciate the fact that while you may not enjoy a particular type of music there are millions who do, they are popular for a reason.
And before you scream I hate (enter genre here) music! Try listening to it!
I personally am not ashamed to shout, "I LOVE DISCO!!" to anyone who will listen and most of them giggle. heart

Eeeh. There's skill, then there's preference. But it's like writing in that many people measure the skill part differently.

There's some genres I dislike in general, but even then I can find some things I like. Writing off a genre completely is rather silly to me.

Re: The BIGGEST Problem with [Name a Genre/Artist here] Haters.

There is no Genre of music that I despise, only certain facet's therein. Generally it's not the music itself that I hate, it's the hollow feeling I get from said artist due to a feeling that the song is obviously capitalizing on certain emotions. I get that songs should have emotion and I prefer it when they do (Blues is probably my favorite Genre), but there are certain times when it's genuine and there are times when it's faked. It's these "Fakings" that I can't stand and it's hard to explain it when it's there and someone else doesn't see it.

Music is a larger part of my life, being that I work in a store that predominantly sells music. I'd have to say that I very much DO bash certain bands and musical artists. I could not care less if people despise me for this, my opinions are there and I have the right to express them. When I feel a band is trying to suck out my soul through their corporate greed and general apathy toward the music genre as a whole, I feel I am quite within my right to tear into there bullshit music and anyone that buys into their music that is devoid of substance.

I'd have to say that if I were to peg any one genre that I tend to listen to the least it would have to be Country. Not because I think the genre is bad, more that it just doesn't attune to my tastes. There are some Country artists that I do enjoy. Hank Williams is a rather popular artist for my ears, as are earlier forms of Country/Bluegrass.

As per D's hatred toward the harder side of metal. I can sympathize, though I'd have to suggest some other artists before writing off the genre as a whole. Cannibal Corpse is a bit fast paced. I suggest possibly going for something along the lines of Isis or Neurosis. They tone down the gutteral sounds a bit (though they are still there) and the tempo is more of a droning sound that almost recreates the motion of a storm. When you listen to it (if you feel so inclined), think of it as this surge of raw power and emotion enveloping you as it takes you down a path into your mind only you can go. That's the thing about most heavier metal's... it's not so much about the hatred and the lyrics... it's about the feeling. Some Metal bands (the two I mentioned especially) will take you into your mind and you may not want to go back. It can be quite a fulfilling experience.

Like I said, I can end up liking just about any genre of music. I love certain Rap, I adore Jazz and Blues, I like pre-war folk and some modern folk. Techno has it's moments and even Pop has some amazements that shoot your way (Just look at the Beatles).

In summation.... don't hate.... unless it's warranted and you can back it.

Re: The BIGGEST Problem with [Name a Genre/Artist here] Haters.

I love many types of music, despite the fact that I say I hate American Pop and Rap and Hip Hop. There is no real reason why I say very bitterly I "hate" them, really, I just don't enjoy that genre of music a whole lot. So why do I say I "hate" that music? Is it because that is what you are suppose to say when you don't like a genre of music? I don't even know. Those genres I "hate" are boring and all sound the same. Also, I'm not really fond of the people who sing them....but then again, I'm a hypocrite. I actually like a few American Pop, Rap, and Hip Hop songs. Just a few though, mostly because I never listened to those kinds of genre as a kid. I only knew Heavy Metal songs and weird random songs at that time because my elder brothers would make me listen.

One point in time I tried learning current songs and artists because I felt out-casted from my fellow peers, but realized that I would actually have to study, read articles, and memorize people I did not care a bit about. Thus, gave up on trying to "fit in". Instead, I started listening to the type of music that made me happy whenever I listened to it, such as Rock, Metal, Alternative, Country, etc. After wards, I discovered anime/manga, and got addicted to the J-Pop songs in the anime openings and endings, which lead to me listening and liking K-Pop. I even started listening to Nerd Hip Hop/Rap cool .

I'm pretty hypocritical aren't I? I love foreign pop, but not American pop. I love Nerd Hip Hop/Rap, but I don't enjoy Rap or Hip Hop. I don't think there will ever be the right answer for why I love foreign Pop or Nerd Hip Hop/Rap. Maybe it is because the music has a lot of feeling? All I know, is that I love the music I listen to. Now, as for those hard core haters, I bet they are more or less like me. They don't have any real reason why they "hate" that type of music. As for artists, people can hate other people for no reason at all. It just happens. Despite the fact it is stupid to hate a certain artist/genre, it will just continue to happen. There is no stopping it. Best to just deal with it, because in the end, a genre of music will never go away.
