Re: Your thoughts: Anime fandom's effect on Relationships
A relationship is built on compromise. If anime is a big part of your life and the other person doesn't like it and wants you to stop, that's not a compromise; that's just someone getting what they want.

It seems to me that if someone's hobbies are going to be a deal-breaker for someone else, then the relationship probably wasn't worth it in the first place.

Re: Your thoughts: Anime fandom's effect on Relationships
I know when my guy friend (who likes anime) got a girl friend she didn't really mind and starting watching some with him. I think it depends how much a cheeky-b*tch the girl is.
As for me, I'd be kinda of disappointed if my significant other was completely averted to the concept of anime. It all depends if they want me to change, 'cause, honey, that's never gonna happen.
Re: Your thoughts: Anime fandom's effect on Relationships
@ Soundmonkey44,
lol, I wasn't saying that he said to not openly like anime, I was agreeing with him on his point about anime being more socially acceptable for girls as oppossed to guys, and that THAT is my reason for not being open.
@AgeTyree,
Your college peeps sound way more awesome then my college peeps
@Mr. Hyde,
I would like to know why it classifies us as perverts too! My brothers GF found out that I like anime and said, "I wouldn't be surprised if he watches that cartoon porn and stuff." to my brother. Seriously? man, people nowadays...
I just wish that anime was more normal like watching TV.
Re: Your thoughts: Anime fandom's effect on Relationships
@Deli: sadly the pervert thing isn't that hard to belive considering the content of most modern anime, lol. And I must say I feel sorry for you if those around you dis your for liking anime. Heck I live in Oklahoma (one of the supposed "Hick" states) And most people I know are pretty accepting of my nerdyness... but then again most people I know are pretty dang nerdy as well. Heck my friends don't even care that I like to watch that new My Little Pony Cartoon (they personally don't care for it but respect my right to like it.) But yeah My advice....Just find better friends and a better GF.
But yeah I would chalk up stufff like that to mankinds natural immaturity and fear of being alienated, people always try to confrom to a certian non exsistant "cool, or norm" but yeah, nothing wrong with liking anime, I'm sure you'll find some good peeps to hang with eventually.
....as for a girlfriend... well obvisouly there are woman who like anime & toons out there (I've met afew...sadly they were already spoken for....darn my lack of luck with the ladies, lol.) But yeah, just hang in there, I'm sure eventually you'll be able to find friendships & realationships that are tolerable of or share in your interests.

This, exactly. Though, at the same time, I'd have to say I'd have a hard time imagining myself with anyone who wasn't at least a slight fan of anime and such. It's sadly that big a part of my life.
Anyway, it's not a requirement in any relationship for both people to like EVERYTHING the other person does, but I do think having some common interests is a must. It gives you lots of fun stuff to talk about beyond the relationship stuff.
Re: Your thoughts: Anime fandom's effect on Relationships
I got the "immature" rating from a few people for watching Anime (I'm 34), but hey, whatever you enjoy & makes you happy, goferit. If you try to please everyone, you end up screwing yourself in the end.
As my last GF told me when she saw what I was watching on my PVP, "You're watching cartoons?"
"No, I'm watching Anime."
If you find someone that truly likes you for who you are, they'll put up with your little vices. And vice versa....
Re: Your thoughts: Anime fandom's effect on Relationships
@cyber: well technically Anime ARE cartoons *rimshot* But thats a whole nother argument for a whole nother time.
But yeah, people are odd creatures....its fine for women to collect Barbies & Porcaline dolls (man those old timy things are creepy, lol) But a man interested in anything other then sports or cars is found odd. Given its not as bad as it was say 50 years ago... but it is sad to know there are still many who will judge someone in a negative light just because they like things other then what the steryotype of a man or woman says they should like.
Oh we humans are such silly creatures are we not, lol.
Re: Your thoughts: Anime fandom's effect on Relationships
Anime as a whole has affected my relationship in the fact that my fiancee likes to watch Lifetime movies and reality shows and basically dislikes animation as a whole, so if I'm in the mood to watch some anime she will groan and whine about it and sometimes leave to go watch TV at her friends houses rather than sit through it with me. Sucks in many ways, but privacy is cool too.
