We had a thread like this back in the original forums, so I'm glad to see one pop up here on the new boards!
Anyhow, recently I've been reading the BOOM Studio's Stan Lee line of books and s far all 3 titles have become some of my favorite monthly book! THe Traveler, Soldier Zero, and Starborn all feature interesting stories by some of comics top creators and I've come to fall in love with these characters to the point where I wonder how I got through the month without reading them (sad I know), I would recommend these books to anyone looking for something new and fresh to read. It's a shame though, too many Marvel and DC fans don't want to give new product a try and it makes it difficult for a new publisher to get off the ground because people have become so used to the norm that they can't venture out to give anything new a chance, but these books seem to be selling well regardless and I'm sure they will be around for a long time to come. Check them out at www.Boom-Studios.com for more!
I've also been reading the Atlas Comics revival of Wulf, Pheonix, and The Grim Ghost lately, all 3 books have been pretty enjoyable but I have to wonder how long Atlas will last since the first issues didn't sell too well and the company seems to be having internal issues already, I guess time will tell if Atlas has what it takes to be a player in a crowded comics market. Check them out at www.Atlas-Comics.com for more!
Generally marvel and dc get read more because they have a team of top notch writers and artists that contribute to a universe established in nearly a century of lore that people have grown up with and been able to escape to their entire lives. The same can't be said about pretty much anything that comes out nowaday.

I only agree with half of this. DC and Marvel have a long established lore but they do not have the greatest writers. They only have a few great writers and several okay writers. I have said this before and I will say it again that while DC Comics and Marvel have some of the best comics I have read they easily has the absolute worst comics I have read.
Ah, I never said Vertigo, I just meant the DC main line. ^_^ That does bring up something I find funny. Their experimental line has never had a bomb nearly as bad as their main line. Kind of interesting to think about.
Well having over 50 titles currently running at the same time under your belt is bound to have a dud or two, but DC really hasn't had anything I'd really throw up at. Everything I've read I've more or less enjoyed. Hell, I even liked Countdown.
I know readers grew up with the Marvel/DC heroes but I just wish that other companies can get a chance to thrive in the business too but the fans are not very open minded in my opinion. Even when the big two comic companies are churning out mediocre title after mediocre title it's as if the fans are ready and willing to spend the money to grab these books instead of thinking to themselves that maybe there is something better out there. Thats neither here nor there and people will buy what the want but I've seen quite a few great companies come and go very quickly because they couldn't attract new readers, I just wish people would open their minds a bit and give something else a chance once in a while.
@Blight: Marvel & DC have good writers true, but both also have a fair share of I don't want to say bad...but....sub-par writeres as well. And then theres good writers that just have BAD stories. Like Jeff Loeb's Run on the Hulk..that, that stunk. Ironic considering how well he can write for Batman. But yeah I like both Marvel & DC , both have neat stuff, but to many people over-hype their universes IMPO. Their both good but both have more then their fair share of Flaws.
@Manga4life: True, But that can be said of modern media in general, I would argue theres far mor Medicore Manga out there then U.S. and Eurpian comics. As someone who reads to much of both, lol, I feel I can justly say that without being pretientious. But then again theres more Japanese Moanga & Manga-ka then U.S. & Eurpopian writeres, so of courrse there would be more garbage then gold in that medium I guess. But yeah, in the end comics rock no matter what country they are from, and pretty much all companies have their ups & downs, the trick is digging through all the clutter and finding the comics & manga that appeal to you...so pretty much the same as any other entertainment medium. And now my rant is done.

.....What?
My argument was that fans are too close minded to give anything that isn't put out by Marvel/DC a chance because they would rather stick to the same ol' same ol' rather than jump on something that is fresh and has some substance to it. I can see why fans stick with Marvel/DC, it's what they grew up with a know, but fans tend to sick with them no matter what and that's not good seeing as how certain titles have not been nearly as good as they once were and fans still put money into it instead of accepting that the books have dipped and trying something else. But that's all a matter of opinion on my part since beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all.
Well lets look at it a different way: lets say that DC or Marvel has mostly bad stories at the time (this is very hypothetical BTW), but remember that most fans can't afford to buy every comic anyway, chances are they are only reading one or two books actively. It's been my experience that a fan will read a few books seriously and then maybe only go outside their preferences once in a while. So long as their main books remain entertaining to the fan in question, they will keep reading it. Even though DC has great yearly events like Blackest Night, Infinite Crisis, 52 and so on, that doesn't mean everyone is reading every stand alone book, they are most likely just buying the main story line and whatever their favorite regular is. The whole point of being a fan is that you really like something and most fans continue to like something even when it starts to suck. Just look at soundmonkey and his love of MegaMan; there hasn't been a good game in years, yet he still likes the games. Why? Because he's a fan. I love Batman, but even he's had his share of lame story lines, but despite that I still love him. Fans will stick with what they love no matter what, that's what makes them fans. There is also writer loyalty to think of. Some fans will read anything by a certain writer. I'll read pretty much anything by Geof Johns or Bill Willingham. Fandom isn't something a person can shake easly, but it's also a time consuming and expensive hobby. The fact is few fans can afford to buy everything they want, so they tend to stick with what they know. It's better to play it safe then spend money on something you don't know you will like or not. That's what I think anyway. Now back to reading some Green Lantern

I won't speak for marvel, but I'm not sure I've read a bad comic written in dc's vertigo line.
