I just wanted to pop in and gives a brief overview of my thoughts about whats going on within the comic book industry....
1. I'm VERY upset that BOOM is cancelling Soldier Zero, The Traveler, and Starborn, I felt that these three books were 3 of the best superhero books on store shelves each and every month and I really hate to see them go. BOOM promoted the hell out of them at the start and then basically stopped on a dime, when this happened it seemed like fans fell off the wagon and the books went from being in the top 150-170 of the Diamond top 300 books to being down in the lower ranks between 270-300. As soon as sales fell off, BOOM initiated the axe instead of doing something positive to help boost sales, it was a bummer but I half expected it to happen.
2. Dynamite's "Kirby: Genesis" is off to a VERY hott start with the first 3 issues landing in the top 80 comics on the Diamond top 300 chart, way to go Dynamite! Also, on it's way in September is the first issue of Captain Victory, the first title to come out of Genesis! This line is cookin' right now and Kurt Busiek is really bringing these characters to life, keep it up guys because people are noticing!
3. I've all but given up on Marvel Comics aside from Amazing Spider-Man, Captain America, and The Avenger core self titled book, I've grown tired of their practices and their constant "events" and crossovers and it's time for me to move on. I will probably drop the 3 titles I do buy from them over time as well, I just need to ween myself off of them slowly before I can give them up. The bulk of my months buys will be Dynamite and DC titles come the fall.
@magna: While I fully understand where your coming from, gotta say I find it ginda sad one would give up on big companies like Marvel &/or DC just because of their non-stop events. I mean sure their not nessecarry, but Their fun.
Anywho...Speaking of set events.. I myself have loved Fear Itself, prbly one of Marvel's better events. On the DC side Flashpoint has been abit lackluster IMPO, its introduced some interesting new characters like Element Girl & Cantaburry Cricket, but aside from that,... abit dissapointing.
As for other Companies IDW's Godzilla comic is still probably one of the funest reads of the year, and looking foward to TMNT.
But yeah, DC & Marvel really need to give their fans wallets a rest, rofl.
Events used to mean something, once in a while big companies would put something together that really had a long lasting impression and solid build to it, nowadays the "big two" use events as a tool to sell more comics and abuse the "big event" concept to push books upon you that you normally wouldn't read. It's pathetic and I'll have nothing of it. I'm giving DC a chance with the relaunch but as soon as they pile a bunch of crap on me with events and company-wide crossovers I'll be done with them too, it's something I refuse to fall victim to. If you like the events than that's cool, but they just aren't for me and I honestly feel like Marvel has been the biggest abuser of it all because they run multiple big events at the same time spanning several titles, it's confusing and downright insulting, I have come to hate Marvel for the way they handle business. I know sales are down and all but if their "writers" were so good and their marketing department was as good as they claim it is, then they should be able to sell books through print or digital without coming up with sales ploy's and crossovers to push "important" stories on us. I'm sick of it.
I too got tired of the "crossovers". Not only did some of these span just about every comic book title they made, but most of them just offered one, or two pages in reference to the crossover event. Just another money grab.
I still read some titles (not as many as I used to) but if there are any crossover events, I don't buy anything extra that I don't normally read.

Has anyone given Kirby: Genesis by Dynamite Entertainment a try? It's been superb so far and features a ton of Kirby's characters that haven't seen print in 20-30 years and characters who never made it past the cutting room floor, it's a brand new universe to dive into with art by Alex Ross and Jack Herbert and writing by the legendary Kurt Busiek. So far I'm absolutely loving it and I recommend this book to anyone who loves superhero/supervillain storylines, check it out and thank me later.
The classic cartoon character Popeye is making a return with a comic series by IDW that launches in April! So get you your spinach and get ready for some good old 30's style fun!
