Re: 85th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) Disscussion Thread
@Death: Seth has been pretty meh so far, he has a few zinger here & there, but overall, meh but i'm bias as i'm not much of a fan o his these days admitingly.
Also Glad PaperMan won best animated short, it deserved it. But Brave winning Best Animated feature..i'm sorry but NO, just NO. If it had turned out like it should have with its original director, i'd be fine, but as is NO. Pretty much every other movie was more deserving of that then Brave was! I'm sorry but its the truth!
As for the other categories, sad Hobbit & Skyfall haven't won anything yet despite nominations. Glad to see Avengers get at least 1 nom even if it didn't win.
I mean I know the Oscar's are rigged, but would would be nice to see more variety in the winners.
I do agree Life Of Pi probably deserved its wins though.
Re: 85th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) Disscussion Thread
Someone please tell McFarlane he's not funny. Because he's not.
Somehow I missed the Animation awards, but I can say at the least that Wreck-It Ralph was better then Brave. Oh well, nice to see Paperman win. Anne Hathaway definitely deserved her award too.

@Looney: Lol agreed, Seth may have a few zingers ever now & then but overall he's pretty much...well I guess he's an acquired taste, would be a nice way to put it, still amazed some one thought it was a good idea to have him host the Emmys' I was really hoping that when Shatner came out they'd pull a switch and have him host the rest of the show, oh well....
But yeah, feel kind of bad still haven't seen Argo, Lincoln, or Dijango Unchained myself, looking forward to renting them once they come out though.
Re: 85th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) Disscussion Thread
I was really glad to see Christoph Waltz get Best Supporting Actor. That was really a career-defining performance. The rest of the awards were mostly predictable. Though I honestly didn't expect Life of Pi to take away so many.
I was pretty sad to see Beasts of the Southern Wild get snubbed for everything. I would have liked to seen that little girl(I can't possibly spell her name) win Best Actress.
Also, I didn't have any problems with Seth. I've seen worse Oscar hosts.
Re: 85th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) Disscussion Thread
@Renzo: IMO Seth is only funny when he has some one else to work off of, by himself he's only so so.
But yeah, poor lil gal didn't get an award, but I bet her mom got her some ice-cream after the show XD *in all seriousness though if I was a child actor i'd be glad just to be there, and would indeed expect Ice Cream afterwards for having to sit through all that XD*
Re: 85th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) Disscussion Thread
Haven't watched the Oscars for a while, there are many reasons for this:
I don't have cable, I had it for a while, watched it for about 6 months then lost interest in it.
While I have a deep admiration for all visual media as an art form, a picture winning or being nominated for an award means little to nothing for me. However, there have been some great movies in my collection that are Oscar winners, King's Speech, Gladiator, American Beauty, Beautiful Mind, Forest Gump, Apollo 13 etc. The fact that they all won an award for something is mere conincedenc - I watched and bought these movies because I saw trailers and wanted to see them - or like in the case of Apollo 13, I got an amazing deal on it and bought it.
However, I feel shows such as the Oscars only promote biases and elitism amoung fan communities in movies (those of you who think anime fans are bad for this, movie fans are far worse). Too often I have spoken about movies with people and they feel that in order for a movie to be considered good, it should at least be nominated for an award, sure, whatever, okay. Of course if a movie wins any award it's automatically good right? I disagree, I've watched comic book movies cough Ironman/Dark Knight series cough with better written, more believable characters than some of these movies, even some kid's cartoons nowadays have more substance.
Or perhaps the greatest sin, self indulgence - there's a difference between making art, a pity show, or visual masturbation, and this is why movie like the Hours made me want to vomit all over my living room. The only redeeming quality about that movie was Meryl Streep's performance and story arch - she's amazing in everything (BTW, go watch Devil Wears Prada if looking for a good movie). The Hours could've been done with just her character alone - it was a great story, the other two were self indulgent, lady abandons her child and I'm supposed to feel sorry for her, give me a break, so, I really didn't like it very much. Then I remember watching Thelma & Louise, blow up a guy in a truck for his immature behaviour, sorry, but I don't see heroism there, I'm surprised I was even able to make it through that misandric pity fest. Proof that just because movies get nominated and awarded doesn't mean they're good. Then an amazing movie like Shawshank Redemption won nothing - nominations mind you, no wins though, it was condending against Forest Gump though, but still, it should've won something.
Then there's the ceremonies themselves, the red carpet, fashion police and all that, then we wonder why the population of North America is so celebrity obsessed.
For me personally, with the Oscars, which goes for three or fours hours, I'd sooner use that time watching a new movie or anime, playing my bass, exercising, or even playing Ninja Gaiden. Life in my bubble is peaceful.
Re: 85th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) Disscussion Thread
@Neon: You make a lot of good points, I agree overall award shows of any kind are pointless pomp & circumstance, but on the other hand, nothing wrong with thanking the people that make the media we love for all their hard work. Yes it creates a sense of elitism and too many people get far to serious about it, but its fun to watch, see if movies you saw/liked get nominated or win anything.
*Speaking of which Hobbit got jipped 3 nominations & not 1 award, for shame academy, for shame! *
But yeah a more humble awards so with out all the flash & flare *kind of like the non televised awards for literature & comics get, would be nice, but that wouldn't bring in ratings...sadly.
Speaking of Awards MLP:FIM, Legend Of Korra & Adventure Time are all nominated for Shorty awards this year I believe, I'd be surprised if any of them one, but nice to see all of them get recognition!
BOT. I agree bad movies can and sadly do win awards and gems can all to often go under appreciated & overlooked!

I watch the Oscar awards every year. I basically enjoy every Oscar award ceremony I watch. Did any of your favorites win any awards? Skyfall was one of my favorites and it won "Best Original Song."
I also want to know if we could talk about he Golden Raspberry Awards here too.
I hope Seth MacFarlane does a good job hosting. I liked Billy Crystal as a host.
I'm right behind you...

I only caught a little of the Oscars. I tuned in when Seth MacFarlane made his joke about Abraham Lincoln.
