I was wondering if it is more economical to get the vizbig 3 in 1 edition over purchasing the individual manga volumes. I heard that the vizbig editions also have some bonus content, such as having the one shot Yahiko no Sakabato in the Rurouni Kenshin final vizbig volume, but is that normal for every book (to have bonus material)?

Unless you'd be planning on getting the individual novels used or something along those lines the purchase of the big edition is cheaper. I purchased Viz's big edition for the first 12 volumes of One Piece with each big version costing approximately $12.95 or around that, while in comparison the individual volumes were around $7.95. They usually come package as three regular volumes per a big volume so really you'd save $8 or $10 depending on where you purchase if you buy the big edition.
As far as special content I don't really have any idea.
I think it depends on what you're going for. I went for the VizBIG editions for Rurouni Kenshin as it was easier and more economical to find those editions than hunting down all the individual volumes, not to mention the cost (9x18=$162 vs 28x8=$224). I would have considered it for FMA if it wasn't for the fact that I got all the early editions before they released them. I have also considered the big editions for InuYasha and Bleach (should I choose to invest in those series). Also, I wish they would do a big edition for Monster.
As for the bonus material: I can't be sure, but I would imagine it is easier to combine side stories and after stories into a compilation, especially if the series ended way before the material that was released.
So, unless you're a collector who is die-hard for individual volumes, I say save the coin and go big. This is coming from a former comic collector, who now wishes he had invested more in the collected trades than in the indiidual issues.

The BIg edition saves you some money if I recall. They are taller than other manga sets so they are kinda awkward on the shelf next to other manga sets up they can save some shelf room and some money.
I reject your reality and replace it with my own.
