Kodocha Japanese track cutting out

Just started watching the first Save boxset of Kodocha and I've noticed the sound sometimes cuts out on the Japanese track. I know this is an older series and might be due to what was sent over to Funi back in the 90s, but I haven't read anything about it. The issue isn't major and I can watch it just fine, but I was wondering if anyone else experienced this or if it was an issue with the set I have?

From ANN:

Quote:
Due to a licensing issue regarding the Japanese Pop Star Tokio, the first opening had to be removed from Funimation's DVD release. In its place is now Ultra Relax the second opening. Furthermore for Tokio's guest appearance in episode 1, Funimation had to completely remove his voice from the Japanese track resulting a in few scenes with absolutely no sound on Japanese Audio. As a final edit in this odd licensing issue, all references to Tokio have been removed from the subtitles and are replaced with a bleep (****) where Tokio would be mentioned.

Oh that explains it perfectly, thanks JLAKing.
Ah the many joys of licensing.

Re: Kodocha Japanese track cutting out

Yeah, this isn't the first time that Tokio & their talent agency, Johnny's Entertainment (now Johnny & Assiociates) caused a US licensor to change things around either as Sentai Filmworks had to use a different opening for their release of The Skull Man because of Tokio's involvement with the original.

It has been known for a long time (and even confirmed by US company reps) that Johnny charges a lot of money to use their artists & actors more than once when it comes to licensing which is why either things get changed around (like in these 2 cases) or we see less of their products licensed here. A good example for the latter would be the live-action adaptation of Boys Over Flowers (the Japanese series, not the Korean adaptation that YA Entertainment released here) where the sequel movie has been licensed (by Discotek) but not the two TV series that were connected to it because of them featuring actors from Johnny's.

The one odd thing about FUNi & Tokio is that they were allowed to use Solid State Scouter for both the Japanese & English (w/Japanese score) versions of the Bardock special from Dragon Ball Z so my guess is that it was more of a Toei deal than with Johnny's.
