I would've loved to see Yuuichi and Mai together, because he did care enough to talk to her and keep her from being this quiet and isolated girl. Also, the ball room dance was amazing. I thought to myself, "how could they not end up together?" But it does seem that Sayuri is in fact more than just a close friend of hers. Mai never shows more passion towards any other person in Kanon.
As immature as she might have seemed (which was my only turnoff), Ayu is definitely the right choice seeing as he clearly had more feelings for her than any other girl. If that kiss in public isn't proof than I don't know what is.
I was all for Yuuichi and Mai. They are complete opposites, but their differences make them compatible. I guess a proper term would be ''opposites attract''. With Ayu, she seems a little too immature for Yuuichi..I saw it as a high schooler dating someone with the mind of an elementary schooler. I'm not saying I didn't like Ayu as a character, I just don't think they really fit together. He didn't have romantic feelings for her at first, and it kind of sprang on in the end, which really made me question where it was going.. I truly do think Yuuichi cared for her, but in my opinion, I don't think she was the right choice. Am I the only one that was for Makoto x Yuuichi as well? Yuuichi cared for her a a lot, too. Makoto is a little immature as well, but she's just adorable and funny, but she had her moments. They really clicked in my opinion, and I actually cried when she disappeared. I think they went really well together. My last choice would be Nayuki. She'd be my first if she weren't his cousin.
Honestly my only complaint with Ayu was her size. If she had the height and proportion of any of the other girls, the romantic interest for me would skyrocket. She looks like more of a child than even Makoto. I know they were cousins, but seriously, Nayuki acted like there was something more there. Not to mention I feel like at some point they mentioned it was a marriage based relation, not blood. That alone means in the eyes of any other country than ours, there really isn't an issue. I don't see the romantic relationship between Mai and Sayuri, but I do see their friendship making it difficult for any man to get between. I, personally, would have chosen Mai. She had all the right elements. I'd give Shiori the Bronze only because I'd have been okay with Nayuki honestly. Could have gone a whole other direction and picked Shiori's sister (I don't remember the spelling) but that might have broken Shiori's heart and possibly killed her, so not a good bet I guess. Makoto doesn't count because A: she was so young, and B: they got married, so technically she wins haha.

Yuuichi's mom and Nayuki's mom are sisters, so yeah, blood-related.
From how things seemed to me, Ayu was more emotionally immature in most respects rather than just immature. Since she was also doing the narration and in the monologues from that, there were several thoughts that were too deep for an immature person. As for Nyuki it looked to me more of an unrequited chilehood crush from before knowing certain things. All of the others had more of the close sisters feel, though not blood related, in my opinion.
