What is your favorite Fratello? Favorite Girl?

My favorite fratello is probably Jose and Henrietta. I like that he makes the effort to try to treat her like a regular girl sometimes even if it does hinder her conditioning.

My favorite girl though is Rico! I like that she is always happy and never seems conflicted or bothered by the events around her or the fact that her handler really doesn't care about her that much. Plus she is the best sniper!

Re: Favorites

Figures you would make this before me.

as for my favorites Its got to be Henrietta for both category's.

I just think she was the most interesting of them all. Jose and her make a great team, mostly because Jose treats her like his own daughter, thats kinda what drew me in.

Re: Favorites

This is going to be a hard choice for me, since every girl, and their fratello bring something unique to the series. But in my personal opinion I just didn't like Henrietta as much as most. Now before I get flamed to death here, let me explain why.

First, I felt as though I as a viewer didn't have much a choice in the matter. Season 1 was clearly centered around the Henrietta/Jose team, and as much as I tried, she just couldn't endear herself to me. Not to mention I thought it was a very flat and weak performance by Laura Bailey, and one that only got better in the second season.

The second reason I didn't like Henrietta, is that her character was too unconvincing. I didn't buy into her repression, her turmoil or her issues budding individuality as a child. It was entirely too much to lob at me in the span of 13 episodes.

While Jose was an okay guy, he was far too often railroaded by John, and I absolutely hate John. I hate him so much, I was regretful that he didn't die in the series, and he really needed to die... TWICE!

As for my favorite, well... I always preferred the Hilshire/Triela Fratello, and you guessed it, Triela was always my favorite character.

It wasn't that she was really in control of her individuality, and had a superior attitude, or that she was a sounding board to the other girls in the agency; it was that she was actually the oldest.

I was ecstatic that Triela was the primary focus of the second season, and I loved the dual story arc that played with her and Pinocchio. In fact the second season for me was where I learned to better appreciate the other characters. For once Henrietta didn't irritate me, and towards the end (especially the OVAs), John somewhat redeemed himself as a cold-hearted piece of steel that I wanted to burn in the fires of hell.

The reason I said that it would be a hard choice, is that Claes is also one of my favorite characters. I like her equally with Triela, though Triela gets more actual screen time, and despite the fact that she has no handler, Claes in my opinion is one of the more superior cyborgs, capable of making really smart and intelligent decisions on the fly. Which is why I love it that they often use her for the "Lone Wolf" missions, and in special ops.

So there you have it.

Favorite Fratello: Triela/Hilshire
Favorite Girl: Triela < Claes

Re: Favorites

I agree with a lot of what you said. I like Triela a lot because she is the oldest and plays big sister to all the other girls and kind of looks out for them. I also loved the Triela/Pinocchio story arc. I liked the human relationship development of the Hillshire/Triela fratello the best. It is a nice, slow, kind of awkward development over the two seasons that seems the most natural.

Claes is awesome too. I love episode 12 in season 1 when Claes gets kidnapped. Just like she was taught, she takes her glasses off right before she unloads on that 1 guy guarding her. So awesome. I definitely feel like Claes is underutilized in the anime although it's hard to give her more screen time stuck in the compound all the time.

I also hated Jean for the most part. He did seem a little more human in the OVA which redeemed him slightly in my eyes. It seems ironic that his sister is Rico who is the happiest of all the girls. I would like to see more depth in her character as she seems to have the shallowest backstory and I like Rico a lot. I have avoided the manga for Gunslinger Girl mostly because from what I have read on forums, Jean sounds even colder in the manga than he is on the anime.

I only picked up the manga once to thumb through and find where, and what volume Il Teatrino is in, and that's about it. I honestly couldn't say with any certainty that John is better or worse. Though, I have a hunch he'll be more tolerable in the manga, since often the animated personification of a character is the medium that generates the most emotional impact; at least it is that way for me.

Um, can you guess who my favorite fratello and Gunslinger Girl is? I do have to say that I have to put Triella right up there with Henrietta, and Hillshire with Jean. It is my ambition to someday own a SIG Sauer P239 two tone and a stainless steel SIG Sauer P230-and yes, they will be known as Henrietta and Triella!

Re: Favorites

I've watched both seasons and the OVA a few times now since I'm addicted to this anime and miss it after watching a few other shows. I always feel the need to come back and watch it again and I still love Rico. I feel like she is one of the least developed characters but I just love her attitude. She never freaks out and seems to be one of the most capable and well adjusted assassins. Plus, any time she is not working she just seems to love everything about life.
