I've been loving this series lately, so I thought I'd go ahead and make a thread about it to see if anyone else here has played them.
I've beaten the first game for the PS, currently playing Sons of Liberty, and I have the 3rd one (Snake Eater I think) ready after that.
Who are all of you guys' favorite characters, weapons, etc.? I'm a big fan of Snake obviously, and Otacon (though I liked him more in the first game). E.E. is also freakin' adorable. The main character that I'm actually not liking is the commander. I tried to like him, what with the Grandpa Max voice, but with him never being honest in either game, I've come to dislike him a lot.
Anyone know how good the original Metal Gear games for NES or SNES were? Anyway, discuss this great series to your heart's content.

So you're playing through Sons of Liberty eh? "What's wrong with E.E." aka Otacon really made me angry with him in that game, I think it'll be pretty obvious when you get to that part of the game.
As for my favorite character, I'd have to say Big Boss. After playing through 3 and Peace Walker, I really enjoyed how his character changed over the courses of those games and there was a bit more humor with him. A close runner up would have to be Major Ocelot!
As for the original Metal Gear series, both games are actually available in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. It was the version of 3 which featured MGO. Those were fun times!
"I hear it's amazing when the purple stuffed worm in flap jaw space with the tuning fork, does a raw blink on hairi kairi rock. I need scissors. 61!"
The only Metal Gear Solid game I've played was Metal Gear Solid 4 (I think one of the badges I received at the end was an earthworm badge... I'm of a very cautious temperament), but I really enjoyed it, made me wish I played the previous games as well.
My brother, I believe, played all of the series except 4, but I remember he was playing one of the games and he kept yanking the controller out. I yelled at him for doing so, only to find it was a rather clever, I think, part of the gameplay. I then felt a bit foolish
I demolished MGS 1 on the PSX when it came out. That was a fun game. I couldn't get into the second one and the third I never finished for some reason. I did a couple play throughs of 4. I really, really enjoyed that. I am sure a couple manly tears were shed on the first time though. I am going to get my PS2 games one of these days and play the MGS saga complete. I hope my old 60GB PS3 holds out. So stupid for not picking up a PStwo when they were $99.
Never played them but from what i've heard, those games aren't canon so they don't matter anyway. The real Metal Gear games were released for the MSX2 in Japan and they were never released here until many years later when as Dormin pointed out, they were added as bonus games in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence on the PS2. Unfortunately i never bought that version of MGS3 so i can't say how they were.
I've beaten the second game now, so I'm onto the third one! Which, luckily, is that 'Subsistence' copy. All three of my discs are the 'special edition' ones I guess. They were originally part of some boxset I think, because the PS1 original game is in a case like a PS2 one, and the back of all cases just have the Kojima logo and says 'Not for individual re-sale'.
Which is pretty funny considering that's exactly how I bought them from a grocery store (old rental copies), but I digress.
Yeah, I really liked Otacon a lot better in the first game. First he made me miss Mei Ling, then I find out about his sordid past - it didn't help that I was loving E.E. too. She was way too cute.
I'm liking Boss (or Naked Snake) a lot in the third game so far. It's amusing to me when he always wants to know what something tastes like.
Do you unlock them after beating the 3rd game or something? Also, MGO?
I'll bet that was against Psycho Mantis in the original, where you have to switch the controller to port 2 to win, heh.
I really wish I had a PS3 so I could play 4, since 2's ending is like 'WHAAAAAA!?'.
Wha, they're not? That's weird, I figured they were since they were given listed info in the first PS game.
Oh, btw - Snake Eater is only a 1 disc game, right? My copy's main menu says 'disc 1' and I have no disc 2, and that's worrying me...

"There are two kinds of folks who sit around thinking about how to kill people. Psychopaths, and mystery writers. I'm the kind that pays better."
If you have Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, there should be a second disc. I think you do unlock the those games by beating 3.
On a side note you also unlock a neat little theatre that has all the cutscenes as well as extra footage.
As for Metal Gear Online (MGO), it was the online game which was released with Subsistence. Sadly it was shoud down a few years ago. The servers should still be up for 4 however.
It's Subsistence, but there is no second disc in my copy...ack...please tell me the second disc isn't anything too important, and I can actually beat the game without it. Or is that second disc where the original two Metal Gear games are?
Oh cool, so it has a theatre mode like the first game did, sweet. And MGO sounds like it would have been pretty fun. I'm not sure how it would work but I would like a multi-player function in these games, maybe something where two people are sneaking and you can try and make the other person get caught.

Yeah, the second disc is the one packed with the extras. Did you get your copy used?
And MGO was quite fun. While it did have the standard free-for-all and tdm games, it also had "Capture the keroan" and a mode where it's an entire team of people against one person playing as Naked Snake.
Yeah, they're used rental copies. Though, I also had my girlfriend look into it online after I got off last night, and we think that what I have is something called 'The Essential Collection'.
As said, my copy of the original PS game is even in a PS2 case, and all three games have no descriptions on the back, they just have the Kojima logo. And on the back of all three, it says 'not for individual resale', so this was some sort of box set at one time. From what she found, Subsistence in that box set didn't have that second disc for some reason.
