Ga-Rei Zero translation is awful

Usually, I love Funimation's translations, the English voices are similar to the Japanese voices and the subtitles are well translated.
But the translation of Ga-Rei Zero is really awful, the actors' voices don't have any similarity whit the Japanese voices, and sometimes they say totally made-up sentences, and the subtitles translation don't always have the best choice,
Me, my friends and fans of Ga-Rei Zero are really not satisfied with our purchase, this product is totally unprofessional.
I don't know if my message can reach someone from the company, but I would suggest a re-release.

Thank you for letting us know. Can you give examples of when the translation is lacking? For example, give the line in Japanese, the line with our subtitle, and what the line actually translates as?

Re: Ga-Rei Zero translation is awful

Thanks for your answer

First I'll talk about the English voices,

Except the fact that they don't sound like the japanese voices, many times they don't say the same things as the subtitles. I know some times the voices can't say the exact sentences as the subtitles, but they are not even similar, there are even totaly made-up sentences.
Example: episode 4 after the opening theme during the kiss scenne whit Yomi and Kagura, your subtitles said "Girls love what they say they hate! "You're like a dirty old man Yomi!" but your voices actors said "Maybe sharing isnt so bad after all. Stop it! Oh come on!" ect, WHY??? That was not necessary. It was a example, but there are more made-up sentences like this.
Not only the English voices dosent sound right, but they don't even say the right things, thats why I'm so upset.

For the accuracy of your subtitles,

In episode 10, when Yomi asked Noriyuki to kill her, and took Kazuki hostage, your subtitles said

Yomi: If you don't kill me... then I'll kill him.
Noriyuki: Stop! He has nothing to do with this!
Yomi: To be honest, I always thought of you as a pest. You were always butting in and taking time away from us.

It looked like Yomi was saying to Noriyuki that he was a pest, ect, but she was actually talking about Kazuki.

It should have been: Yomi: To be honest, I always thought of him as a pest, always butting in and taking time away from us.

There are lot of mistakes like this one, I'll give you more examples and proof when I'll have the time to re-watch more episodes.

Thanks for the examples so far. I'll relay everything to the Production Department once you've gathered the rest.

I can understand being disgruntled with a release, but is it necessary to start a thread to point out every mistake funi made? Especially when you yourself are guilty of a typo in your very name.

You forgot the last E in universe.

Just saying you could have just as easily e-mailed them about the problem.

But I digrese, I'm just being nitpicky.

So yeah just ignore me & go on with....whatever it was you were doing. nervous tongue

To Soundmonkey44,

(for my nic, I just wanted to combine 2 words, but that does not matter)

Don't get me wrong, I really love Funimation and the work they do, except this one, and its not a question of personal taste, lot of times the English voices actors say lines that are not even related to the subtitles.

Just watch the anime in English with the English subtitles, episode 4 is a good example.

Re: Ga-Rei Zero translation is awful

I see. Sorry if my last post sounded like I jumped on you .

As for the show, Yeah I bought it and watched it dubbed, have yet to watch the sub. Personally I don't mind it when the U.S. script takes liberties with the dailouge.

As for Sub's being messed up...I can see how that would be troublesome. I'm sure if the problem was to bad however Funi would have offered replacement discs by now.

But yeah, always glad to meet a fellow fan of toons & anime on the net. Welcome to the forums UC. cool

To Soundmonkey44 and also Sophie

No prob, and if you want to help a true fan of Ga-Rei-Zero, you could also give your opinion.

If you watch the anime with the Japanese voices, you'll see how the English actors didn't fit the true characters.

And if you watch it in English with the subtitles, you'll see that the English actors don't always say what they should.

I'll give you a example: In episode 4, after the openning theme, in the car, They said that its been 3 years since the last time the number of Supernatural Disaster rised like this.
The English Kagura said: "I hope not..." (with a sad face)
But she was suposed to say: "3 years...." because she was thinking about her mother who died 3 years ago, that's why she had a sad face, and Yomi saw it, and she did the pocky scene to keep Kagura from thinking about her mother.
But the people who watch this in English won't understand the true meaning of this scene.

I know, this time it was a complex example, but I just don't understand why the English actors didn't said what they were suposed to say...
At this point you can't even call this a translation...

Re: Ga-Rei Zero translation is awful

Thank you for dub examples and, of course, for your support of FUNimation.

Instead of as a true version, try to see the English dub as just a different version.

The English dub of any show isn't really a direct translation, and it's not meant to be - it's an adaptation. If you want a direct translation, watch it in Japanese. The English dub usually takes liberties with the script either to fit lip flaps or to fit how the ADR team interprets the show.

Some people like this and some people don't. If you're worried about other fans and how they will interpret the show, don't be.

As for our translation of the Japanese track, please list your examples as such:

Episode #:
Line in Japanese (romanji or Japanese characters):
FUNimation subtitle:
What the translation should be:

Thank you. ^_^

Re: Ga-Rei Zero translation is awful

RE: Sophie

Thank you very much for the time you took to answer my post.

I understand and I agree whit you, but... (I don't want to be disrespectful) but there are limits at how bad a "adaptation" can be. It looks more like a "improvisation" to me. Others Funimation works like The Sacred Blacksmith were really well made, similar English voice, and good translation and subtitles, so why Ga-Rei-Zero is so different?
And even if I watch it in Japanese cause the English voices say random things, sometimes the subtitles are misleading, like the example I gave you, so I don't like both the English Dub and Sub. What should I do then? Give up on my favorite show? If I take my time to give you lot of examples like you asked, is there really a possibility that Funimation will do something? I'd be really surprise if Funimation take time and money to correct some errors that people won't notice without watching the anime in Japanese whit sub.

Thanks again
