Now, from a post on one of my discussion boards which talked about Funimation and Ocean Studios, NJ_ said that Ocean is very good at subtitles, as evidenced why subtitles from Bandai & Geneon DVDs are so easy to read & accurate that they make Funimation's look like a joke. Maybe Funimation should use Ocean for the subtitles if they want to improve on accuracy & easiness to read on subtitles.

My complaint on that thread was not over FUNimation's sub translations (though i do have an issue with them using one of ADV's translators for some of their titles) but it was over their Blu-ray subs because they are not the same as the DVD subs. In fact, they are hard to read (especially when looking at light backgrounds) and while they have tried changing the color from white to yellow for some anime, they are still hard to read.
With Bandai's Blu-ray release of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, the subs are the exact same as the DVD in size & font because like the DVD, the subs were done at Ocean (which can be easy to recognize if you own any of Bandai & Geneon's old DVDs which Ocean was involved with) and the same can be said for Sentai as the subs shown on their DVDs are the exact same in font & size as their Blu-rays as well which has me wondering why can't FUNi do the same?
So it wasn't the translation but the type of font & its size. And if Ocean is so good with subtitles, why not Funimation just use them for the subtitles.

Because it's cheaper for them to do it "in house", than it is to contract Ocean.
Funimation just needs to thicken the border on the Blu-ray subtitles (something they can easily do) and they should be all set. The problem is that it takes a while for changes to take affect in SOPs (standard operating procedures).

Blu Ray looks better, though why do all companies use bland fonts?
That being said, I guess I never had an issue with them since I ever only see the subs in the opening and ending themes.

That's fine but one of the problems here is that this issue affects not just the Japanese audio and songs & signs but also the extras they get because they don't dub all of them.
The first FUNi Blu-ray i bought, Sengoku Basara season 1, has mini-OVA extras that had 4 of the 7 episodes exclusive to Blu-ray. Unfortunately, they are sub-only and the subs on them (which are the same as on Princess Jellyfish) were so hard to read that i've had to rewind and pause a few times just to figure out what what the hell they were saying. It ruined the fun of watching those OVAs especially since the OVAs themselves were hilarious (especially the Blu-ray exclusive episodes) & it doesn't have me excited for when i get season 2 since that set also has mini-OVA extras (with 4 out of 7 episodes exclusive to Blu-ray as well) specifinally for that season.
