"To be Continued" but not continued. Why?

I know this may seem like a "request for another season" thread but I assure you, it's not. I'm simply curious is all. Why is it that a fair amount of anime end with "To be Continued" or a massive cliffhanger and then leave it at that? It seems like if the creators placed those there because they had plans for another season or sequel series, why not make it? I understand that if it doesn't sell well in Japan, that can be a big factor but it doesn't necessarily mean that the entire anime is a bust.

I think you underestimate how expensive anime is to make and how much Japanese otaku pay for Blu-Rays. If Japanese fans don't buy enough copies to cover costs or they don't sell enough secondary merchandise(manga, books, toys, models, games, etc.), there's almost no chance that the production committee is going to invest in another season.

THey may have planes to make another season but sadly if the firs tproduction just doesn't cover the expences that it took to make it and then have a large enough gain on top of that. We'll we sadly will not be seeing another season of the show.

Yeah I can relate, it is indeed dissapointing when a show ends on a cliff-hanger or promises more but never delivers, I'm still waiting for Season 2 of Panty & Stocking *but at this point not holding my breath on it ever happening sadly*

But yeah Anime, heck just TV in general is a hit & miss business, its all about ratings & $$$. Somethings make alot of both and can last forever, others are lucky if they get more then a season. Thats just how TV works.

That was like Freezing for me; I enjoyed it, I thought it did a good job of introducing the viewer to the characters and the "rules" of their world, it had a great build up to a climactic battle and concluded.

Then it happened, it ended in such a way where they open the door to a greater story arche that could really go into great detail regarding the main character's development - in other words, more how and why and of course, backstory.

Yes, I'm pretty bummed that chances for another season are slim to none - I have found nothing online that confirms or denies a sequel, do no news = no sequel. That's just how it goes.

And the Panty and Stocking ending was equally open, except my reaction was "oh, f&ck off." Whereas with Freezing it was "no way, cool, they must make more." But they won't, sacrifice to the anime gods I guess.

I really don't think that ending was meant to be taken seriously. It was more like a parody of a "to be continued" if you ask me.

They trolled us.

Nah, if they make another season something funny will happen where it didn't actually happen, or they'll backpedal it somehow, but I must admit, it was a good laugh too.

I think there are plans to make a season 3 and 4, I can't remember where I heard that it's a go, but, it wil be a long wait.

@Neon: Yeah PS&G really did do a good job of trolling the audiance at the end. XD And I agree if they ever did do a second season they'd probably do something "oh yeah that end you saw in season 1, never happend, NOW BACK TO THE MADNESS!!! tongue *

Anywho, back on topic sadly many anime & toons get cut or end before they finish telling their story, the old Magical Girl Pretty Sammy OVA series only had 3 episodes, never got to do a proper ending. And then on the U.S. side of things in recent history both Generator Rex & Sym-Bionic titan got cut early, and it looks sadly like Thundercats may end without finishing its story too, sadly. tear

But yeah, animation is fuleld by ratings & $$$ sadly if it loses more then it makes or doesn't make as much as the higher-ups want, it gets cut. sad

That makes sense. Honestly though, I hadn't even considered the merchandise aspect of it.

There are no plans for a season 3 of Sekirei.
