Re: Serial Experiments Lain Blu-Ray Quality/Lack thereof
I really don't understand what all the fussin' and bitchin' is all about. I'm watching the show on a 40" 720p plasma and it looks amazing.
I do think the box flakes a bit too easy, though. Plus the bluray cases are in there way too snug. But those are rather minor problems, honestly. The flaking is easily fixed with a dab of super glue.

There's your problem, it's not on an 1080p television so its probably not as blatently obvious to you as it is to others. You really aren't getting the most out of your blurays or bluray player. It's a whole another world of difference between 720p and 1080p. And in 1080p, from my own personal experience watching these discs, it's by far the worst blu-ray I own for image quality. It's awful. And it's not a nitpick. It's a valid reason why people bought this product. They were deceived by Funimation into thinking they were getting the stunning Japanese masters and quality. The trailer they showed was close to the Japanese footage even! This actual product is awful and not what I paid $54 for. I can't get a refund or replacement or anything so I'm stuck with this piece of crap.

You could sell it. It wouldn't return the entire amount, but would recoup some costs, and may lose FUNi a sale on a new product.
I want to recoup all of my cost. Not just some. I'm not looking at selling it. I just want to shove it back where it came from or at least get it half way there.

I'd say hope for a recall. If the problem is as widespread as it seems there's really no other solution.

Won't happen as the number of complaints so far is very, very small. The a/v-phile sector is very, very small. Funimation doesn't care about that, they are appealing to the masses who don't care about those things and people are always buying inferior products from them!
Re: Serial Experiments Lain Blu-Ray Quality/Lack thereof
I look at everyone getting all up in arms over this topic regarding Lain's picture quality, grabbing their torches & pitchforks and screaming "Burn FUNi at the stake!!" regarding this issue...
And yet when Aniplex of America releases the bluray of Durarara!! without a subtitle track for signs and on-screen text - which is a HUGE design flaw for anyone wanting to watch the English dub - hardly anyone says anything. And the few who do are little more than "Aww, that's too bad...." and refuse to create any sort of stink over it.
It's especially maddening when the latter costs roughly 3 times as much as the former. And yet what would people rather argue about? The teeny little bit of pixelation that's present in a 14-year-old TV show.
Re: Serial Experiments Lain Blu-Ray Quality/Lack thereof
People complain about what they care about, plus there's a much smaller pool of people who shelled out $300 for a series to hear from, plus this is the Funimation forum and not AoA.
And in all honesty this is just about 5 people complaining, they have every right to complain but it' not like this is a large group of any fans wanting to burn down Funi, just a few people who want their money back...
Re: Serial Experiments Lain Blu-Ray Quality/Lack thereof
@SpacemanHardy: You see, that pissed me off too. But this isn't a "teeny bit of pixelation" either. Entire swaths of the screen are discolored. I will say that at the very least they acknowledged the problem exists on ANNCast so hopefully something can be done about it.
Re: Serial Experiments Lain Blu-Ray Quality/Lack thereof
@Rootsofjustice: If they did mention it on ANNcast, then at least FUNi is willing to acknowledge the issue. There have been people who e-mailed AoA weeks ago about the subtitle problem and haven't heard a thing to this day.
