Re: Roku support?

From the 1/16 Q&A video posted, it sounded like roku is kind of on the back burner, so I'd like to add my support for this topic. I would absolutely pay for an Elite Subscription if I could watch it on my HDTV via roku!! I've really been enjoying watching crunchyroll anime on my roku recently and I have been praying that funimation would add a roku channel!

Funimation, I love what you're doing and where you're headed, and I hope you will seriously pursue roku support in the near future :D

Re: Roku support?

I'm pretty darn certain that I'd subscribe here if I could playback on Roku. The funny bit is, that it looks like Roku is pretty darn easy to program for, and doubly-so in that as long as Funimation is using fairly standard codecs and containers, it should be a very automated job to make sure that their programs stream properly to a Roku box. From Roku's developers site:

Quote:
Roku Channels are written in a Roku-specific language called BrightScript. BrightScript is a scripting language similar to VisualBasic and is quickly learned by experienced programmers. Communication with services and servers is done over HTTP using standard XML-based technologies like (M)RSS, RESTful APIs and JSON. For video, we recommend H.264 video with AAC-LC audio wrapped in a MP4 container. Roku also supports the VC-1 video codec, and the WMA and MP3 audio codecs.

It seems like the type of thing an intern could do over a couple of months or an excited user to do in trade for a lifetime subscription. Hell. I'd even be tempted if I could use it as a way to learn enough to resell my knowledge to other streaming sites.

As an elite subscriber I would love to see a Roku channel or XBOX LIVE app... anything in the works?

Re: Roku support?

Yes, I would also subscribe to funimation if they had a Roku App! We got the Roku for Crunchy roll and now with Fios getting rid of the Funimation channel, we need this to get our anime fix!

We have a laptop that can plug into the TV, but due to our dog barking a lot, we tend to pause what ever we are watching multiple times, and we tried a laptop remote but it didn't work very well!

hurry it up Funimation! ROKU! ROKU!

Re: Roku support?

I just joined to tell you if you add roku support or join somehow all you shows with netflix I would pay the extra $$$ per month.... netflix has a roku app so this would not require you to develop your own and you already work with netflix together... but if you can create your own app with would be good too.

Re: Roku support?

Hopefully with the mobile app finally coming out next month, they can start working on the Roku channel.

As not having a Roku, it wouldn't do me much good. It would be nice to have support for the PS3/360. I'd like to think there is a larger portion of people who have access to one of those.

Thing is, an entry level Roku costs $50 (I didn't get the one that plays angry birds, I think its $100), so its a lot easier for an XBox360 owner to add a Roku than for a Roku owner to add an XBox360. IOW, while XBox360 and PS3 have much bigger installed bases, the number of people where the TV is not so easy to hookup to the computer "who don't have but could easily afford to add" a Roku is probably a lot more than the number of people "who don't have but could easily afford to add" an XBox360 or PS2.

And from the side of the streaming site, Roku support seems to be a lot easier than XBox360/PS3 support. The streaming is a sideline for XBox360 and PS3, for the Roku, its all they do.

Android support would be nice, but not something I want to worry about atm. Ofcourse it would need to not rely on Flash as not all Android devices support Flash.

If they have an Android app, they don't have to support Flash ~ but if they are getting the video encoded for mobile devices anyway, they ought to ADD an "m.funimation.com" version of the site to feed their series, with good touch-screen controls. m.crunchyroll.com is a good example to start from ~ learn from what they do right, and what they do wrong, and leapfrog them. And having a good touch-capable mobile flash site is a good back-up for people that have devices on the smaller mobile operating systems, like Windows or Blackberry.

Some people don't even have a PC that can handle a flash heavy site like this very well, HD streams are almost out of the question. My laptop would certainly cry out in pain, my desktop is a big power hog in comparison to my PS3, not to mention the excess heat it puts off.
And while raising energy consumption ~ one of the upgrades to the current model was getting power consumption down to 2 watts while watching content. It could run for over a day on the power that a PS3 draws to stream one episode.

For those who want a Roku app from FUNimation, I suggest that you all vote in this poll FUNi has on their FB page.
