Problems with fairy tail dub

I think that having the characters say "the fairy tail" guild sounds wrong and detracts from the meaning, it should just be fairy tail, and ruins the enjoyment of the show and natsu attacks fire dragon iron fist sounds wrong iron fist of the fire dragon sounds better, like it is in the subs

Yes this is more for the Fairy Tail section. And this has been brought up in one of the other threads already. Your entitled to your opinion though. And i somewhat agree. thouhg I think if they could have they should have left the original technique names. But either way they have done a good job with the dub overall.

I think a lot of it has to do with Funi trying to get mainstream appeal for Fairy Tail. They desperately want the next Naruto or Bleach so they're casting as wide a net as possible. That would explain a lot of the dialogue changes.

I really don't like how they changed Natsu's catch phrase. "There's a fire in my belly" is just so absolutely incredibly lame. I feel embarrassed just typing it.

First, remember "The Wizard of Oz"? Remember "The Lollipop Guild"? Do you have a problem with that name?

Second, "Iron Fist of the Fire Dragon" may sound better here, but in the context of the dub, it would make the whole scene cluttered. It just doesn't have the same flow as "Fire Dragon Iron Fist." Plus, if the subs say "Iron Fist of the Fire Dragon," it sure as hell ain't the Funimation subs, which say "Fire Dragon Iron Fist."

And I sure hope you don't think "Roar of the Fire Dragon" sounds better either, because in episodes when more than one Dragon Slayer use their "Roar" attacks at the same time (in Japanese, first they individually say the name of the dragon their magic takes after, then they shout "Roar" at the same time), "Roar of the [insert multiple magic type names said at the same time here] Dragon" would sound incredibly messy.

These problems that you have are not everyone's problems. Opinions they may be, but they're certainly not big enough issues to ruin the dub. They're just things we must learn how to deal with, like how everyone who thought Natsu was going to be played by a girl in Japanese (think Naruto and Luffy) had to deal with the fact that a guy was playing him.

Yes, phrases like "I've got a fire in my belly" may sound tacky. But remember, Fairy Tail thrives on tacky. Especially the good kind of tacky.

You mean you actually wanted Natsu to say "Karyuu no Tekken" instead of an English translation, like how practically every other technique name is said in English, even in the Japanese version?

There isn't that many line changes to begin with people are just nitpicking.

How many times was "There's a fire in my belly" used? Pretty sure "I'm all fired up!" will be the catchphrase. A lease it's not "Believe it!".

In Japanese, he says what can be translated to "Now that I've eaten, I feel re-energized." The English equivalent is "Now I've got some fire in my belly." So he says it quite a few times in the Part 1 episodes. If Natsu were to say the former in English, I really don't think that would sound very Natsu-like; the Japanese translation of that phrase may suit him, but not the literal English translation.

There's also the dubbed version of episode 10, where Makarov confronts Macao while he's disguised as Natsu. Right after he sees through him, Makarov, says "What's the matter? It seems you lost the fire in your belly." Honestly, the way Makarov says it just sounds way too epic, at least more than what he says in the subs ("What's wrong, Natsu? You've suddenly lost your spunk").

But "Now I'm totally fired up" or "I'm getting really fired up" or some other variant is the exact same tacky pun with the same number of syllables and sounds like something a hot-blooded shounen protagonist would actually say.

As I said, "Now I've got a fire in my belly" is not the dub equivalent of "Now I'm fired up." It's the equivalent of "Now that I've eaten, I feel re-energized." Meaning he feels re-energized by the fire he has eaten and is now in his belly.

The dub equivalent of "I'm fired up" really is just that: "I'm fired up." So Natsu says both things, and they're based on entirely different phrases.

The real question is this: which sounds more Natsu-like in English? "Now that I've eaten, I feel re-energized" or "Now I've got some fire in my belly"?

Re: Problems with fairy tail dub

Well admittedly, I've only seen the first few episodes dubbed, so I am probably generalizing/overreacting. My opinion may even change once I see more of it. I realize that a lot of the Japanese phrases can be interpreted different ways and neither is any more correct than the other. I guess I just prefer the official subs to the English dialogue.

Anyways, I still protest that "There's a fire in my belly" is lame, regardless of how it's used and how often

Re: Problems with fairy tail dub

Either way, this whole thread leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It's like its title makes the dub seem more flawed than it actually is, and will discourage people from listening to it when it is, in fact, far better than the first post of this thread makes it seem. Of course, I managed to see all of Part 1 dubbed, and it was impressive enough for me to love it. That's not to say anything about the other characters whose voices haven't been heard by many people before. If you have a good grasp of awesome VAs like Patrick Seitz and Jerry Jewell, you can really get a sense of how much justice they can do for their characters.
