There's a number of animes I wanna buy, like Fractale, Okami-san, Steins;Gates, and the Tenchi OVA but with the packaging being in thick DVD cases drives my OCD into overdrive when I have a clean row of blu-rays then then hulking dvd boxes in the middle.
When I bought the Tenchi movies, the Slayers 4&5 set, I also bought blank blu-ray cases and plan on scanning the cover and editing it for blu-ray size, not a particularly a difficult thing, but still something that could be solved by releasing blu-ray only editions like with FMA.
I guess what I'm asking is if there's any chance of the "Limited edition Blu-ray/DVD combo" being regular as stand-alone blu-rays anytime soon or if I'll have to continue creating my own packing.

Nah, they are what they are, so you're just gonna have to buy what's out there. I have an OCD problem myself, so the best advice I can give you is to just arrange your collection as evenly as possible: put all the same-sized cases together, and try to match how they're packaged as well.
Darn. At least now I don't have to wait to buy the series I want. It's really not that bad to create blu-ray case versions. I bought a 10 pack of double disc cases for like 5 dollars and being a graphic designer, I can manipulate a scan of the cover to fit beautifully...plus now when I loan out a series to a friend, I won't have to constantly worry about getting them back so I can watch it. Also, thanks to your icons, it reminded me how much I loved strike witches! I'll have to add those to my buy list.
Now I only have to wait for a possible blu-ray release of Deadman Wonderlan and Is This A Zombie.
Yeah the combos are pretty much here to stay. Frankly I liek teh combos. Though even after getting a BD player I still say BD isn't what its cracked up tobe. Sure its nice more eps can fits on less disks and all. But realy I don't see a diffrence. But at lest you have the option to watch either.
I reject your reality and replace it with my own.
It's not so much the combo itself, it's more a confusion about why they're in the thick DVD boxes, though NIS is doing the same thing with all its releases.
For me at least, blu-ray isn't a HUGE leap in quality like atari to NES, or SNES to N64, but I was on the fence about upgrading until I was gifted Ponyo a few years back on blu and it was just this "whelp...Guess it's HD for me, which is rather annoying now that a number of studios have only allowed DVD releases of certain series.
You could wait for Classic or SAVE releases, as those split up the formats. Those are still a couple years off, though.
I thought FUNi had gone with more BD height with their recent combo LEs, but new releases have been rather rare from FUNi as of late.
All the anime I've recently bought has been in blu-ray packaging.

I don't get the hate for DVD/Blu-Ray combos, your getting both formats for the price of 1-1 1/2 Its a pretty sweet deal, and its always nice to have a back-up, Blu-Ray players are pretty cheap these days, so having both formats is a GOOD thing, not a bad one!

I can't fully speak of recent combos since the only things I've bought from funi recently have been the slayers collection which came out a year and a half ago, and the Tenchi movie collection which I can understand putting dvd cases.
The hate might come from over thinking it, thinking that you're being charged extra for the format you know you likely won't ever use, that if it was just the exact item you wanted, it'd be cheaper.
I think Steins;Gate is the only BD combo pack I've bought from funi lately, but it is BD sized (well with the additional few millimeters for the thickness of the cardboard box.) I don't mind the combo sets, in many cases I end up just giving away the DVD version (at least that's what I do with most movies I get that are combos.) I personally see a huge difference in DVD vs BD but I think the setup you are watching it on makes a good bit of difference. I follow the THX recommended seat to screen viewing distance (diagonal screen size divided by .84 gives you the best distance to view from, with the screen less than 15 degrees above the viewers straight line of sight) and so sitting 6.5' from a 60" screen the DVD vs BD difference becomes apparent to me, both in video as well as text (I typically watch subs.) Here's a good chart that shows the distance from screen compared to the size of the screen and at what point each resolution begins to make a difference and when it reaches its maximum benefit.

I don't think I've ever heard of the seating distance being relevant to the quality before, I've always just stuck with the standard "sit a safe distance in a brightly lit room" that animes tell me. I can't believe it goes all the way up to 130 inches.
Steins;Gates is a blu-ray case?! Sweet! I was looking into buying that. It's hard to tell on the size based upon pictures (I tend to only buy from amazon and ebay). I'll have to look up the sizes of Okami-san and Fractale.
