The DMCA trumps "fair use," unfortunately. I'm not sure there's much anime that's very educational anyway.
I don't know what this mean? Is there no such thing as fair use?
Do the fair use laws not apply to DVDs?
I think one problem here is that you seem to have a misunderstanding of what "Fair Use" is. If you have an interest in this go over to ANN and read their 3 part series written by a lawyer about copyright. Basically he sums up Fair Use as It being designed to protect news agencies, teachers, etc... from being pressed with copyright infringement for using clips and other parts of copyrighted work “For purposes of criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship or research.” Nothing else.

what do you mean a digital copy?
Such as episodes purchased from iTunes, or Hollywood movies that include access to a downloadable file.
Fair use still applies to the content on the disc, but the DMCA limits the ways you can access that content (through licensed DVD players or software).
I feel the DMCA seems to clas with fair use. I feel the DMCA and us copyright laws need to me ammended, so that private, personal, non-commercial use is included in the fair use clause.
Just like you can rip CDs onto the computer, you should be allowed to do the same with DVDs and Blu-ray.
Also in art galeries and theatres, I think people should be allowed to photograph artwork, and performances for personal use only. That is my belief.
I am standing up for people's liberty. You think america is the land of the free. To me, its doesn't seem to be the case.
Re: Copying and Ripping DVDs/Blu-Ray discs for Personal use only should be permited.
To put it bluntly, "Fair use" are laws that protect you from being sued through use of copyrighted material, they have nothing to do with insuring you access to copyrighted material.
Being able to rip CDs to your computer has nothing to do with fair use laws, it's just a failure of a medium, because people have abused this failure media companies are making sure future products will have such defaults which allow you to copy media.
Re: Copying and Ripping DVDs/Blu-Ray discs for Personal use only should be permited.
@SpaceShot Your being far too unrealistic & idealistic. Entertainment industry already has enough problems with illegal distribution as is.
Yes it would be nice if more media had a digital copy option like lots of big budget movies do, but its just unrealistic *atm any who*. Also what your suggesting for DVDs, all it would do is increase the already high level of illegal distribution of entertainment media.
As for the art-gallery thing, yeah...unless you work for a newspaper or magazine, its understandable to see why flash-photography isn't allowed.
Also if you consider stuff like this "standing up for peoples liberties" you must have a very Micro view of liberty. Yes Fair-Use laws are outdated, but in the end what it comes down to is most people want to be able to get everything for free and do what they want with properties, creations, etc that ARE NOT theirs! Even if you personally only have good intentions, sadly most would arguably abuse set media.

The thing is, technically its OK.
Just grab a DVD ripper program and do it. Just dont upload the movie someplace or sell the pirated DVD or the original, then its OK.
Only issue is some shows and movies may be cinavia protected and will refuse to play on Cinavia enabled devices (Such as PS3 and PSvita)
