Re: Changing Times: Dub vs Sub

@MicroChip: Kiddy Girl-and would work because it's the sequel to the popular Kiddy Grade. I also agree that Funi should start making sub releases. The reason being that it can mitigate costs further in conjunction with streaming revenue,

Spoiler: Highlight to view
which can allow Funi to do some outsourcing like to Ocean Studios and Bang Zoom! Enterainment because it would be covered by streaming and sub-only release revenue.

A few years ago Bandai Entertainment made statements at their convention panels that they were releasing Anime with subtitles over dubbing in order to bring these titles to us closer to the Japanese release. At the same time FUNimation was making a promise to fans that they would continue dubbing all of their media releases. Bandai Entertainment did not survive even with this new approach and it looks like we will not have Media Blasters around for much longer.

I watch most Anime series as it releases in Japan through streaming video. I am also an avid collector of Anime but unfortunately cannot collect streams. While I am grateful that FUNimation continues to dub the Anime they release on DVD/Blu-ray I think it may be time to make a change. There are a lot of titles that never see a media release in the U.S.A. because there are concerns that sales will not cover the cost of distribution, especially when adding a dub to the series. Just like the S.A.V.E. Editions and Anime Classic Series I think FUNimation should create a new collection for the purpose of releasing Anime which is subtitled only for those titles that do not warrant a dub. Creating a collection specifically for this purpose would not break that promise made years ago.

As a note, I attended both panels at Otakon those many years ago.

I'm pretty sure this is mostly a matter of opinion.

Don't get me wrong, I prefer to have Anime dubbed. It's just that there are titles that never see a DVD/Blu-ray release due to budget constraints. The competing companies are either releasing the newest titles or re-releasing titles they previously released or obtained from the fallout of Geneon and ADV.

There would be no profit for FUNimation to dub and release titles that were previously passed over. Creating a series for releasing subtitled only Anime might close the gap on profitability and allow FUNimation to bring these titles to a R1 DVD release. That would include newer titles that did not make the cut or even those older ones such as the sequel to Kiddy Grade...Kiddy Girl-and...or even the controversial School Days.

School days was horrible, I would hope they wouldn't waste their time on it.

Amen ta that brother/sister.

But ahh on a more serious note, Again I could potentially see Funi doing some sub-only releases in the far future but nothing like that any time soon, they are known as the ONLY company that dubs everything they release, I doubt they wanna change that & have fans whining at em, they already get enough guff from their site here, they don't need people complaining to them for releasing a show with out a dub as well. Least not right now.

Re: Changing Times: Dub vs Sub

As a person who watches and buys English dubbed anime, the idea of Funimation making certain titles sub only, well, all I can say to that is:

Quote:
Agreed, I'd buy Tatami Galaxy in a heart-beat dub or no dub *although I would prefer a dub just so I could watch the beautiful art witout having to read XD*

I've only watched about three episodes of this and I'm really liking it, especially that second episode, I would love this one to be dubbed for two reasons that are related to each other and one other reason. First, I just like watching anime in English, but the other two reasons that go together is that the dialogue is so fast on it, so this is an anime that is actually pretty tough to read subs and watch at the same time - and I mean the guy talks fast on it. This brings me to my second point, it would be great to see how this carries over in English - just to see how fast the person would talk, who they would cast, the box art, all that stuff.

So, since this is the thread, I'm going to take this opportunity to plug my English dub wish list (off the top of my head) for Funimation:

Tatami Galaxy - for reasons stated above, but also, I can already tell, this is a wicked anime.

Ikkitousen GG and XX - these animes are getting old, Media Blasters tried but failed, I have high hope for Funimation here, consider a copy sold right here.

High School DXD - it's getting to be that time again.

Re: Changing Times: Dub vs Sub

Ahh, nobody posting seems to like School Days...

I may have misread some of these posts but I'm getting the impression here that people think I was suggesting that FUNimation release titles the way others are doing it, some subbed and some dubbed. My suggestion is that they release subtitled series for which they have absolutely no plans to dub. FUNimation and others have resorted to re-releasing older titles to bring in additional revenue with very little overhead and these re-releases have been selling. It seems there is still a market for older titles.

Another reason I suggested this is because FUNimation is falling behind on there new title release schedule. Sentai Filmworks has just released 3 series from the Winter 2012 season, 2 of them subtitled only and 1 of them dubbed. We still do not have a release date for High School DxD which came from that same season. The newest title we have a release date for from FUNimation is Shakugan no Shana III which came from the Fall 2011 season.

I really don't want to see FUNimation drop out of the lead on North American Anime distribution. I rely a great deal on them for all of their dubbed releases especially after their handling of the Geneon fallout. I was collecting a couple of titles from Geneon when they suddenly cancelled their distribution schedule. FUNimation picked up those titles and finished releasing them without much delay (one of them being Black Lagoon). Unfortunately, I have managed to collect over 1,000 DVD/Blu-ray discs and have no need for a re-released title. The only way I can continue to provide my support is through never before released titles.

By that point, the initial release has already covered most of the cost of the property, and started turning a profit. I think those re-releases have a much lower sales expectation than a series hitting the market for the first time.

Re: Changing Times: Dub vs Sub

Lets see the whole bud thing would have to get better I watch about half of the 85 box sets of anime i own in Dub format. It would be less if one did not count whole seasons. I enjoyed some dubs but many never live up to the voice acting choices in Japanese. Emotion comes out on screen. I think many of the US dub actors seem to forget that aspect of a show. I can tell a crazy person from a normal person just by voice alone. This can be said of a upset and angry person.

do not get me wrong Ghost Hunt from Funimation has a great dub cast. I also enjoyed Gunslinger Girl in dub formats! while others I stuck with the Japanese cast due to great voice acting.

I would love to see the choice offered at places like Itunes for a SUB, and DUB choice right after download! meaning the customer could chose. but till they get to that point I will keep collecting dvd's and blue-rays.

high school dxd is getting ready fror a 2nd season in japan , and is believed to be more than the normal 12 episode run, some think it could be as high as a 36 episode 2nd season.. if thats the case, i wouldnt be shocked to see funi hold off any any dubs on dxd til they see how long season 2 is, since the show can very well be a longer than average title (and would be an excellent option to throw on toonami once dubbed)

@Golf: DXD on Toonami, your JOKING right!? Right? Toonami is a block for ACTION & SCI-FI BASED ANIMATIONS! NOT fanservice, & or other otaku-pandering titles *Demarco & co have made this very VERY clear multiple times*

Don't get me wrong I like DXD, I may buy the DVD/BD combo pack when it comes out, but that thing like pretty much most other ecchi, harem, otaku, etc shows does not need to be within 100 feet of Toonami.

Heck the only reason Tenchi Muyo GXP got on is because the originals were on back in the day and they were essentially a hoge-poge, Action/Adventure, Sci-fi, comedy, slice of life, etc. They didn't exploit the harem aspect as much as modern anime does and when they did it was primarily used for Comedy.

..... But I digress.... Yeah Highschool DXD has about as much chance of airing on Toonami as The Room does wining and academy award.
