Okay, I just got the Blu-ray release of Serial Experiments Lain and the subtitles are *GASP* actually legible! So, really I don't see the problem. The subs are perfectly legible to me and you can see them as clear as day. So, honestly, if anyone has a problem with FUNi's subtitles, then either you are blind, ,which you cannot help, or you are the most unobservant person on the face of the earth.

My complaint was about FUNimation's track record with past titles and recent releases. I did NOT include Serial Experiments Lain as an example of recent releases because I haven't seen it.
If the subtitles are *GASP* legible, great. It may mean that FUNimation is cleaning up its act *GASP*.
But to say that anyone who has problems with FUNimation's subtitles is "blind", or "the most unobservant person on the face of the Earth" based on the subtitle quality of ONLY ONE SERIES that you happened to see is JUNK SCIENCE.
How do you know I wouldn't agree with you that the subtitles of Serial Experiments Lain are *GASP* legible? Well?
Have you seen any other Blu-Ray series? Which ones? How were the subtitles? Were they rendered differently than the ones in Serial Experiment Lain? Well?
As far as JUNK SCIENCE goes, you might want to apply for a job as a climatologist. They're always looking for good junk scientists - you know, people who leap to conclusions based on partial information, generalize their conclusions to include information they don't have, and who add disparaging ad hominem attacks to their observations.

Ya know, there is one very, VERY easy solution to this problem you're having of reading the subtitles:
Watch the dub.
Ya know, as I've said in many of my posts on this issue, I'm one of those folks who prefers to watch Anime in Japanese language with English subtitles.
Your one "very, VERY easy solution" amounts to settling for something I dislike more than poorly rendered subtitles. So you want me to go from bad to worse with your very VERY easy solution?

Yes, quality subs can make or break a series for someone like me. You're lucky to be able to tolerate the badly done subs. Wish I could, but....
Ah well. I'm experimenting with re-doing the subs for Full Metal Panic in a legible font and color. Naturally if I can make it work, I'll toss the originals and keep the remakes. So far, so good! The process creates a Blu-Ray with what the hack recorders call "forced subtitles", that is, they're always on. But that's OK, since I don't watch these Animes any other way.
Besides, Full Metal Panic is one of those series whose dubs I definitely hate worse than the poorly done subs. That's another reason I'm trying this approach.

Yes, with everything that you can do in Blu-Ray setups, it's too bad something like subtitle formatting options wasn't included.
A soft sub standard is included as part of the Blu-ray standard, but from everything I've heard, it was hastily put together, and neither easy nor consistent with the subtitles it renders.
I'm not sure what you mean by "soft sub standard", but I program my own Blu-Rays and I've never had problems with consistently creating legible subtitles that look good on different players.
"Soft subs" being subtitles that use human-readable text files, rather than imaged vobsubs (the only option available for DVD subtitles).
But if you really do make your own subtitles, I shouldn't have to explain the difference.
I'm a bit confused by this and have a genuine interest to see if I can see what you all that feel they have poor quality subtitles are talking about as I have never noticed it. Would either of the EVA rebuilds, Summer Wars or Steins;Gate be considered to fall under the category of poor quality subtitles? Those are just some that I own any could look at. I personally prefer white subs and really do not like when yellow text is used.
But if you really do make your own subtitles, I shouldn't have to explain the difference.
Actually I do know the difference between text and image subtitles and have worked with both. Typically I use Subtitle Editor to work with the image-based vobsubs because it has a built-in OCR function which converts them to text for editing. It's a good OCR, too.
I just haven't heard the term "soft subs" used in that context before. So yes, even though I make my own subs, I did need an explanation of what you meant by "soft subs."
